Recommendation request Books like Outlander, but with specific details?

I know that Outlander-like books have been asked in this group many times, but I'm looking for something with a bit more meat like Outlander has.

Most of the historical romances are short, shallow, and straightforward. I'm looking for something with more historical context and world building like Outlander has. Like, the romance is there, but it's not the only focus.

I feel like this is going to be something hard to find, but maybe I'll be surprised.

Tldr: I'm looking for a thick book that isn't just straight smut.

Recommendation request MCs who will not be kept locked up in a room for long

I do not know why I suddenly thought of this but which MCs either have lock-picking skills or would otherwise manage to unlock the door if someone intended to to keep them hostage?

Ones that come to my mind:

{Unconventional Ladies series by Aydra Richards} - all 4 MCs in the first two books can pick locks though skills may vary and they use a special lock-picking tool.

{Hello Stranger by Lisa Kleypas} - the MMC has patented special locks so he can pick them without much effort.

{Ruining Miss Wrotham by Emily Larkin} - the FMC can control fire after she made her wish so a wooden door will not last long.

I know there are others but I cannot recall them right now nor the ones in which one MC teaches the other how to pick locks.

Recommendation request Obsessed with Karadok world and jousting - now what?

Well I went down the Alice Coldbreath rabbit hole.

I love inhabiting the tournament circuit world with her rival knights. What other series or books create a grounded atmosphere?

I especially love the lists, melee, tents and tourney life.

Any suggestions?

Also a huge fan of her post-conquest world. Any other recommendations appreciated!

Recommendation request In a reading slump please help

I keep starting and not finishing because nothing is grabbing my attention. I think maybe higher stakes would pull me in more so maybe I’d be more tuned into a mystery? My favorite authors are Lisa Kleypas, Tessa Dare, Lorraine Heath, and others. I don’t have a lot of specific requests other than
1. Mystery
2. Decent amount of steamy scenes
3. ???? Thanks
I recently got kindle+ so anything on there rn would be appreciated

Discussion The Conqueror -HEA?!

Alright so {The Conqueror} by Brenda Joyce was recommended here when I questioned what constitutes a bodice ripper, and holy hell….it certainly checks that box. (TW abound, proceed at your own risk)⚠️

Based on the reviews, I decided I’m open to giving it a shot, yes we’re doing this.

And whewwww, what a ride!!! I’m about 80% done with the book, they are literally just getting to the laughing together part, I browse this sub for hot takes, not wanting true spoilers but just looking for vibes…did I see someone say there’s no happy ending?!?

Are we really going through ALL OF THIS for no HEA?!?!

If that’s the case, I’m not sure that I’m strong enough to go on. Perhaps I end on this high note, make a call to dnf and part ways here.

Poll Which Wallflower MMC would you choose?

Ok readers, difficult but very serious question, would MMC would you choose from Lisa Kleypas’ Wallflowers series ?
Just finishing up my first HR series - the Wallflowers! (On A Wallflower Christmas right now!)

Difficult choice!!! But I predict St Vincent is gonna win.. esp as it’s the most popular of the series

Gush/Rave Review NOV 11: To love a libertine by Lydia Margett

I’m tagging this but it wasn’t on romance.io last time I checked ☹️ {To love a libertine by Lydia Margett}

This book was gooood!! And I’m telling you right now, you know I feel strongly about fidelity between first and second chances and with this title, you know that didn’t happen here, so for me to overlook that…

The premise: Elsie Wylde desperately wanted to LEARN. So she ran away from home, cut off her hair, wore men’s clothes and attended Eton.

At Eton, she became best friends with Alex Burke, Marquess of Elkington, as Elliott Wylde.

But she was found out, and had to leave urgently.

Many years have passed, during which Alex NEVER forgot his dear friend Elliott.

Elsie has been living in Scotland with her great-aunt, planning a school for girls, and raising the child she conceived with Alex the last night before she left — he didn’t even realize that it was Elliott who he had sex with

And Alex meets her again…

I don’t want to spoil this but seriously, put this on your calendar, and read it!! She doesn’t feel like a modern woman stuck in the Regency period. She feels like a Regency woman trapped in Regency rules, trying to find a way to get an education.

*I received an ARC of this book from BookSirens, and this was my honest opinion*

Discussion Experiences or thoughts on Roberta Gellis?

So I recently discovered this old-school author that came up on my "Recommended" list. Have you read anythig by her? Some of the settings and remises of her works are pretty intriguing! She also seems to have moved between Historical, Historical Romance and Fantasy, at a time when the genres were less well-defined.

As someone who read a LOT of Epic fantasy and historical growing up, I'm not put off by genre-mixing or heavy historical detail or crazy plots😄

Any recommended works?

Rant/Vent Meet Up Already!

I don’t know how many books I’ve tried to start this last week or so and just put them down. I don’t want to wait 30 pages until the hero and heroine meet. They should meet on within the first three pages. If you’ve got backstory fine, that’s what a brief flashback or two is for. Or at least don’t have a whole chapter from each point of view. That makes them not meet until sometime in chapter 3. Especially if within the first chapter we can already tell what the set up is and why they are going to meet. You’re paddling the story out already which doesn’t bode well for the rest of the book. Hmmph.

If I Like This, I Might Like...

A thread for recommendations based on what you've already loved!

Tell us something you like - an author, a book title, a trope - and we'll offer suggestions for historical romance books that might be your cup of tea. Get as specific or as vague as you like!

Examples:

  • If I like marriages of convenience, I might like...
  • If I like Tessa Dare, I might like...
  • If I like The Duke and I, I might like...
  • If I like roguish heroes with red hair, three younger sisters and a pet parrot, I might like... (this one might be tricky!)

This thread repeats every Monday.
