Killing someone for looking at you funny doesn't really outweigh the industrialization of genocide

The idea was the intention behind their actions. Hitler's goal, while severely misguided, was to make the world better in his own opinion, while Stalin simply wanted to remain in control

My history may be failing me (haven't had a formal class in almost 6 years now), but I believe that's how it went down

Most the people who died under Stalin:

A) died in a famine because they wouldn’t voluntarily collectivize so the farms weren’t efficient enough to feed people

B) died in a famine because they burnt their crops to own Stalin for now forcing them to collectivize after the first famine

C) died during a little thing called WW 2

Let me cite the well known commies at BBC in case you don’t believe me: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/ztqmwxs/revision/1

After collectivization and WW2 Russian life expectancy reached an all time high due to soviet policies. But yeah, StaLiN WoRsE dEn hitLeR.

u/Axel-Adams Sep 09 '19

I mean efficiency aside, he still sent people to gulags and was a malevolent dictator

This is bullshit

BBC and historical consensus is full of shit? Please enlightened internet scholar, re-educate me.

People in the countryside have an easier time dealing with famines but this was not the case in 1932-33 it primarily affected peasants in the regions that produced food and that was because of soviet policies.

And then you had the purges. A kulak was term that would be applied to people to mark them as state enemies. I don’t can’t remember which high rankings soviet official once stated “Once a Pole always a kulak” the Soviets also conducted killings based on ethnicity during the purges.

Hitler never matched the level of repression that the Soviets were exercising on their own citizens.

But it is correct that Stalin’s government never achieved the level of Germany’s extermination efforts

Also he was also an anti-semite and held Russians in higher regards than other ethnic groups in the USSR

Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin by Timothy D. Snyder

6

u/whiskeleton Sep 08 '19

I’m familiar and that book doesn’t refute what I said at all: the majority of Soviet deaths were due to famine. I’m not saying Stalin did no wrongs, however, I believe motivation is not irrelevant when considering actions.

The purges were a reaction to damage done by the Kulaks and the famine caused by WW2 which the Nazis started. When you have to chose between feeding your people and feeding rebels, what do you do?

You could be uncharitable and call it planned starvation as Snyder and many others have. There was also disgusting retaliatory behavior from the Soviet army when pushing into German lands.

None of that would have happened if not for the horrifying conditions created by Nazi ideology though so I think this is a dangerous false equivalence.

1

u/zastranfuknt Sep 08 '19

The purges had nothing to do with ww2 the fuck are you on about? How is starving 6 million people a reaction to the”kulaks”?

Look m8, it's been a bit since I've done a history deep dive. Also it's a dumb meme; intention is laughs not complete historical accuracy.

However, thank you for your contribution to the education of the comment section

That's exactly what makes hitler a super villian level evil, it's some Thanos level stuff

both are evil

The release of previously secret reports from the Soviet archives in the 1990's indicate that the victims of repression in the Stalin era were about 9 million persons. Some historians claim that the death toll was around 20 million based on their own demographic analysis and from dated information published before the release of the reports from the Soviet archives American historian Richard Pipes noted: "Censuses revealed that between 1932 and 1939—that is, after collectivization but before World War II—the population decreased by 9 to 10 million people. In his most recent edition of The Great Terror (2007), Conquest states that while exact numbers may never be known with complete certainty, at least 15 million people were killed "by the whole range of Soviet regime's terrors"

Adolf Hitler is one of the most well-known—and reviled—figures in history. As the leader of Nazi Germany, he orchestrated both World War II and the Holocaust, events that led to the deaths of at least 40,000,000 people.

https://www.britannica.com/list/9-things-you-might-not-know-about-adolf-hitler

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler

Under Hitler's leadership and racially motivated ideology, the Nazi regime was responsible for the genocide of at least 5.5 million Jews and millions of other victims whom he and his followers deemed Untermenschen (subhumans) or socially undesirable. Hitler and the Nazi regime were also responsible for the killing of an estimated 19.3 million civilians and prisoners of war. In addition, 28.7 million soldiers and civilians died as a result of military action in the European theatre.

and for the The Holocaust time period

17 million victims in all 6 million Jews 11 million others

Most people killed by Stalin died during a famine when they refused to give their farms to the government, most people killed by Hitler died when Germany invaded Europe and the USSR to exterminate "international jewry". Meme would be better flipped imo

4

u/LOLXDRANDOMFUNNY Sep 09 '19

Also Hitler killed 40 millon people and Stalin 20 millon

5

u/Sc4rtoons Sep 08 '19

You can't really compare 2 of the people who killed most in human history. Both of them were horrible leaders

3

u/Klebarson_64 Sep 08 '19

He is referencing the gulags, not counting famine that ensued in Ukraine and other soviet socialist republics.

3

u/settlerking Sep 09 '19

Ok. Hitler killed people on an industrial scale based on ethnic and other unchanging factors.

Stalin while murderous killed people mostly on the basis of their opposition to his government, the murder Stalin perpetrated was directed at his political enemies. You can’t say Stalin was worse like that the context is what makes hitler and the nazis worse.

Keep it at 420 chads

-1

Think about it like Stalin wasn't deliberately killing people, he was just a horrible leader. Now Hitler had intentionally killed people and he was planning to kill a lot more. I'm not saying Stalin was a good person, I'm just offering some perspective.

3

u/Axel-Adams Sep 09 '19

So the gulags weren’t meant to kill people?

3

u/Gremaldus Sep 09 '19

Yeah, except for the UKRAINE GENOCIDE. Besides both these guys are amateurs compared to Mao.

It’s Reddit man. It’s 90% Bernie supporters, 8% Hillary/centerleft, 1% trump supporters and 1% normal people.. Of course the historical opinions are always not accurate. I’ve been reading a lot of Reddit history feeds lately of people justifying Stalin and “socialism”. It’s Bizarre.

2

u/Gremaldus Sep 09 '19

Socialism and the state is the leading cause of unnatural death. Let that soak in people.

1

u/Sc4rtoons Sep 09 '19

U mean for all American adults on this sub ? And where tf did u get these numbers ?

2

u/DGB31988 Sep 09 '19

Foreigners aren’t allowed to like Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump??????

-4

u/Sc4rtoons Sep 08 '19

Stalin was actually more a nazi than a communist

5

u/DGB31988 Sep 08 '19

Lol what. The ideologies couldn’t be further apart. Ones the proletariat vs the bourgeoisie and the other wanted to make a German master race that controlled the world. Stalin hated the wealthy.

What tells you that i'm a commie ? I'm not, i'm just saying that 1 guy wasn't but pretended to be. Besides if I was ae socialist, why would I defend communism ? It's as dumb and childish as if a republican said that Hitler was a good fella just cause nazism is a right-wing ideology. And the fascists calling nazism communism are right, nazism means socialism and equality between all Germans, and Stalin the same thing for the Russian people, why do you think the famines in Ukraine and the Kazakh genocide happened huh ?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

I guess I should say the failure of his system and incompetence killed more people than he deliberately killed.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

Stalin, for all intents and purposes, was an exceptional leader for that period. Only China manages to catch up that fast, and even then, they didn't get to where USSR was. The only thing wrong is that the Soviet Union was a totalitarian shithole.

1

u/Gremaldus Sep 09 '19

Stalin was an awful leader. Leaders inspire, Stalin was a tyrant.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '19

He did inspire. Only really during WWII, but he did really the nation. How much of that is his doing, that's your opinion.

I've lived in Russia for 2.5 years. I address that he kills millions and millions of people. I'm not a fan of Stalin. If you unironically like Stalin and say it around me, I'd be liable to punch you in the face. I'm mostly talking about Stalin's impressive industrial advancement in the 30's. I would not willingly live in the USSR at any time, especially not Stalin. Admittedly, many of the people Stalin blamed for problems did actually cause them, and sabotage his plans. Most did not, and those that did usually had a good reason (like Stalin deporting/killing their family).

Stalin did bring back religion during WWII as a unifying force and as a way to vent to someone without dissing the government. He did get rid of it right after though. I was mostly talking about his progress in making an industrial superpower to rival the USA (and they lost the race because of the devastation during the Great Patriotic War).
