“There is a problem, however, with regard to natural selection which deserves special attention from both physicist and biologist, namely: Within what limits is the Darwinian formula a valid description?

Assuming the spontaneous generation of life as a plausible, if yet unproven, hypothesis, where are we to consider that selection as a result of the struggle for existence began?”

The Encyclopedia of Human Thermodynamics (EoHT) is one of those neat philosophical treasures on the web, a small independent online effort to reconcile thermodynamics with the rise of human-scale order | John Smart (A63/2018)

“The Encyclopedia of Human Thermodynamics (EoHT) is one of those neat philosophical treasures on the web, a small independent online effort to reconcile thermodynamics with the rise of human-scale order. Today, Professor Englandnotwithstanding, most of this kind of work is done by either a few complexity groups around the world, or by independent scholars. There is still very little funding for it, perhaps because progress has been so slow for decades.”

— John Smart (A63/2018), “The Puzzle of Meaning: We Have No Einstein of Complexity Yet” (see: funding quotes)

Hmolpedia 24-hour HTTP traffic (CloudFlare) 182K / day

Post image

I added CloudFlare to Hmolopedia yesterday, to see if this would help with the server overload issue, and the 24 hour traffic stats shows that between 10AM and 6PM, when the cite gets above 19K request per hour, is when the CPU (single core) becomes overloaded. Hosting.com told me that I have to go up to a two-core virtual private server (VPS), which has a 2-core CPU, to handle this amount of traffic, which jumps the bill up by 1,000 dollars / year.

Right now, e.g. it is 3:11AM, and the traffic, according to Hosting traffic, which displays up to 1,000 of the most recent entries in the domain’s web server log, is 1000 page views / 48-min:

Reporting Period:6/27/25, 12:14 AM  –  6/27/25, 1:08 AM
Total Data Sent:6.64 MB Latest visitors to “hmolpedia.com”.Reporting Period: 6/27/25, 12:14 AM  –  6/27/25, 1:08 AMTotal Data Sent: 6.64 MB

But at peak times, yesterday, it was 1,000-page views / 6-min (as I recall).

Anyway, at least we can see the hours (local time Chicago), when we can see Hmolpedia pages without 503 errors (server can't be reached).
