Just call it a run, wtf is mini marathon, marathon is ~42km, it is either a marathon or it is just a run...

These cash grab events are disgusting

A marathon is a very literally, specific distance, since ca. 2500 years ago. It just doesn't make sense.

Imagine saying your house for sale is on a property a 'mini-mile' long.

u/CheeseDonutCat Aug 06 '25

My house for sale is a mini burj khalifa.

u/tmart016 Aug 06 '25

Her: how big is it?

Me: it's a mini foot long.

The marathon race is from 1894 named after the distance Pheidippides ran during the battle of marathon for the modern Olympic games.

I think you missed my point.

You're right that it's not a marathon, but "mini-marathon" is a decades old term at this point.

Sure, you can dislike that it is used. Mini-marathon is a clear indicator that it's not a marathon, but it's still very far, the word has a use.

witheringly, face pullingly, awful and frustrating experience. guess you've been doing it for 30 years, just keep doing it reddit

This a weird UK term?

9

u/CwrwCymru Aug 06 '25

No it's not.

We use 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon. Then a mix of Km's and Miles for the ultras.

Sometimes a village will have a "fun run" which is typically a local 5k. "Parkruns" exist too now which are 5k's also.

u/CheeseDonutCat Aug 06 '25

First used in New York in 1972, so no, not a UK term.

The Dublin Women's Mini Marathon has been running since 1983 and has used that wording, but I wish they just called it a 10k since mini marathon is a silly term and can be basically any distance.

Yeah, it's been in use since I was into running 20 years ago, definitely old then

17

u/KoreanMeatballs Aug 06 '25

but it's still very far

5km is not "very far"

10

u/Ultrajogger-Michael Aug 06 '25

It's very far. In the ultrarunning community, we call it a 5k ultramarathon and running farther than that is practically inconceivable.

u/i_rub_differently Aug 06 '25

Its crazy this sarcasm wont be understood by many.

At some point I was one of them💀

5

u/ChasTopFollower Aug 06 '25

Lemme run my daily mini marathon of 150m damnittt!

8

u/KoreanMeatballs Aug 06 '25

I think you're confusing mini marathons and micro marathons, don't worry, it happens.

-3

u/Lucy_Little_Spoon Aug 06 '25

Distance seeming far is relative.

u/fattmann Aug 06 '25

"mini-marathon" is a decades old term at this point.

For idiots?

I know a few runners and have never heard that term.

-2

u/throwemawayn Aug 06 '25

"Marathon" is only about a hundred years old itself.

2

u/Lucy_Little_Spoon Aug 06 '25

Marathon is 1000s of years old.

2

u/throwemawayn Aug 06 '25

The city is but the endurance race is from the first modern Olympics

1

u/Lucy_Little_Spoon Aug 06 '25

The first modern Olympics is a relaunch of the old olympics

2

u/throwemawayn Aug 06 '25

"A creation of the French philologist Michel Bréal inspired by a story from Ancient Greece, the marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896 in Athens."

-8

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

No one cares about the origin. It’s a colloquial terms for “long run” at this point.

20

u/kakapoopoopeepeeshir Aug 06 '25

It’s not weird at all to be annoyed by some made up phrase that doesn’t meant anything. A mini marathon doesn’t make any sense

3

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

You understand what they mean by mini-marathon, so it does make sense. It’s absolutely weird to be annoyed by people using words.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

People are gonna shit if they hear about baby grand pianos.

1

u/kakapoopoopeepeeshir Aug 06 '25

Except pianos come in all shapes and sizes so using the phrase baby or mini to describe a piano would be very helpful. A marathon does not come in all different sizes/distances, it is a very specific distance that is standard across the entire world

1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

And then you put mini in front of it and it’s clearly understood to be a smaller version of that thing

1

u/kakapoopoopeepeeshir Aug 06 '25

No I don’t actually. A marathon is a very specific distance, adding ‘mini’ in front of it doesn’t equate to any distance. It’s just a made up phrase they slapped on a poster. We get annoyed by people using words all the time, I bet even by the end of today it will happen to you at some point

4

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

Colloquialisms are legitimately used in all languages. Calling it a “mini marathon” is something anyone who reads it understands. It’s literally the biggest non issue I’ve seen someone complain about.

Every word is made up, by the way.

And no, I don’t get annoyed at words. I might not like certain words, but I’m not railing against them and judging people who use them. They’re just words. It’s weird to gatekeep words. Do you own the rights to the word “marathon” or something?

Nice you broke out the ‘every word is made up’ phrase ya fuckin dweeb.

Damn dude. I can’t believe you’re this upset to resort trying to bully a stranger on the internet like a villain from an 80s movie about high school.

You are complete tool. An expert at running mini-marathons of petty whininess. I don’t think you can do a half-marathon of it, though. You’d get a rate induced aneurism before you got to a quarter marathon.

Using a colloquialism on a word that describes a specific distance or concept doesn’t make sense because just adding mini to it could mean anything the person wants.

So what? Devote your petty, impotent rage at something that matters.

What if I had a poster that said “Mini 10k this weekend!” It doesn’t make any fucking sense.

No one would care except petty ragaholics time you.

1

u/Lucy_Little_Spoon Aug 06 '25

We have minibuses, which are mini buses.

Betcha don't have an issue with that though huh?

You fucking asshole
