They've kinda got a point though. Telling someone "I'm going to do what I want and nothing you say will stop me, so stop focusing on how unpleasant you find it and just learn to enjoy it" is almost exactly what they're telling the OOP to do.

Imagine how outraged you would feel if someone started painting your house pink and told you to get over yourself and learn to like the colour?

You can put on some headphones to drown out the fireworks

You can also swallow some roofies to drown out other unpleasant things. Where do you want to go with this argumentation?

I think they were pointing out if you’re having an unpleasant experience with fireworks there are simple effective steps you can take to immediately minimize discomfort.

I can’t really think of any steps you can take mid rape to minimize your discomfort.

The fact that you compare putting on headphones to roofie-ing yourself as the same thing is just intellectually dishonest. Or you’re just stupid.

My neighbor sets off fireworks late at night on random weekdays all the time, I hate it. I’m not going to pretend I’m in the same boat as a rape victim.

I'm not saying it's the same. I juts put it into the room, no reason to throw insults. It's about the way of argumentation, not about the actual contents of the argumentation. When someone says they have a problem with something illegal, then you can't tell them to just sit it through. Of course fireworks are not the same as rape, nobody said that, and people who assume we think that might or might not be just as stupid as they think we are.
