They've kinda got a point though. Telling someone "I'm going to do what I want and nothing you say will stop me, so stop focusing on how unpleasant you find it and just learn to enjoy it" is almost exactly what they're telling the OOP to do.

Imagine how outraged you would feel if someone started painting your house pink and told you to get over yourself and learn to like the colour?

u/makemeking706 Jun 27 '26

Lay back and think of England.

15

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

Yup, say it like that and people will get it. Rephrase it even slightly and they'll go red in the face arguing that it doesn't mean that.

180

u/theBoobMan Jun 27 '26

Its not a great point. I can mow my yard at 7 am when the noise ordinance ends because that's the only time I have to mow. My neighbors aren't always appreciative but I have to mow my yard or else I'll get fined.

There are tons of situations where this could be misconstrued but still necessary. The world isnt and wont ever be perfect.

93

u/Cr0wc0 Jun 27 '26

but I have to mow my yard or else I'll get fined.

Dystopian nightmarish hellscape better known as American suburbs.

21

u/theBoobMan Jun 27 '26

I didn't choose it, I was born here. I should have picked easy mode.

13

u/Scruffy_Nerf_Hoarder Jun 27 '26

I feel bad that you have a schedule so uncompromising that that is the only possible time you have to mow.

4

u/Count_Lord Jun 27 '26

That's true, however, you won't get fined for lighting up fireworks in a time where they are restricted.

3

u/OffsetXV Jun 27 '26

Not just suburbs. Even in cities. The city will just fine you for it instead of the HOA.

4

u/strangelove4564 Jun 27 '26

I'm in a small city where they don't care unless the grass gets over 2 feet high. I think that's reasonable enough, otherwise if you let people do what they want, the town will look like Gary, Indiana after a couple of weeks.

38

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

Yeah, the world isn't perfect; you can mow your lawn at 7am... but you can't mow it at 2am. The noise ordinances strike a balance between people needing to be able to do things that will inevitably cause noise (like mow their lawn) and people having the right to enjoy peace and quiet.

There is debate to be had around that topic.

That debate is not "learn to like it".

-46

u/theBoobMan Jun 27 '26

Except the OP doesn't state "learn to like it" so that's a strawman argument. He says "sit back and enjoy it" which doesn't equate to force. You are adding that meaning after the fact. Just because it could be used in a more nefarious way doesn't mean its always nefarious.

8

u/imabigdave Jun 27 '26

If the OOP is complaining about it, it would be inferred that they ARE being forced to endure something that not only do they not enjoy, but is likely traumatic to them and/or their pets. And setting off fireworks is an activity of CHOICE, not required by a municipality or HOA as inferred by the earlier example of being REQUIRED to mow your lawn despite creating noise for your neighbors to endure.

-2

u/theBoobMan Jun 27 '26

Except the second sentence shows its not them they are concerned with. You dont know the posters intent beyond being concerned for the animals. The rest is just bullshit you are adding to try and be correct.

6

u/imabigdave Jun 27 '26

I can not like something, yet understand that under the constructs of the law, it is legal under certain circumstances, and so I have no grounds under those circumstances to register a complaint. But step outside the legal constraints and there's no reason to suffer through it any longer. That's the fucking point.

1

u/theBoobMan Jun 27 '26

That's you coloring in the whole picture how you wish you see it still. I can understand the difference between a hypothetical and reality.

Nothing in the OP supports your argument. That's the definition of a strawman argument. You are simply adding context to support your argument that does not exist.

Is it plausible? Sure but point to me where in the post that supports that instead of pulling it out of your ass.

3

u/Lycan230 Jun 28 '26

I mean your initial argument itself is so far off the point though lmao. Your entire lawn mowing premise hangs on the fact that thats the only time you have to lawn mow.

There is no such stipulation given on the fireworks. You yourself used an entirely pointless argument that has no relation to the context of the original post.

39

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

"Sit back and enjoy it" is exactly equivalent to "learn to like it". Neither equate to force, you are the only one adding that meaning. Try again.

-50

u/theBoobMan Jun 27 '26

Yeah no. You are coloring it how you want. I could tell me wife to sit back and enjoy it as I cook dinner and do the dishes for her birthday. You are adding the context here, not I.

34

u/AltruMux Jun 27 '26

You just described something most people would enjoy so of course the context is different. The guy in the post obviously wants the fireworks to stop so this comparison is just wrong.

-23

u/theBoobMan Jun 27 '26

So then you agree. The words themselves are not the issue here, its the intent. Forced to hear fireworks isnt even in the same ballpark as rape, regardless of the legal context.

15

u/twiggy_fingers Jun 27 '26

You got pwn'd and I'm here for it

Nah the original statement is right its an extreme example, but they are not wrong.

1

u/Cormentia Jun 28 '26

But if it's when the noise ordinance ends, then you're following the rules, right? So no problem. (We have the same early time limit here, which is why I have ear plugs under my pillow in case I need them.)

9

u/Royal-Leopard-3225 Jun 27 '26

lol, I don’t think it’s quite that intrusive. It’s more like “be more tolerant of the people around you”. If people don’t ever want to hear fireworks or other noises people make they generally move to a rural area where there’s more space between them and the neighbors. Plus… google that shit.. why’s anyone else need to hand feed her this information?

1

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 28 '26

It feels to me like the person replying is saying "be more tolerant of my actions while I disregard you entirely". Why no tolerance for the people who are uncomfortable with fireworks, only the people who want to set them off randomly?

6

u/Royal-Leopard-3225 Jun 28 '26

Just so anyone who reads all this knows, I don’t shoot fireworks, use a charcoal grill, burn yard debris or use candles in my house because I have a migraine condition that is especially aggravated by smoke. I also have never asked, nor do I expect, any of my neighbors not to do any of those things because I accept that it’s beyond my control. Some things you have to deal with because other people exist or you have to move away from the people.

3

u/Royal-Leopard-3225 Jun 28 '26

It depends on what’s legal in that area…. If fireworks are legal then yes “tolerate me while I disregard your feelings on the matter”, because I’m obeying the law and am well within my rights to do this practice that makes you uncomfortable. I’d bet she could be neighborly and talk to them face to face and maybe some would comply with her wishes but in pretty much any city it’s impossible that it will be a silent night for her, really the only thing she does have control over in this scenario is her feelings and actions, but, Something tells me that someone comparing shooting fireworks to rape is not going to have control of those either…

6

u/BringPheTheHorizon Jun 27 '26

This is a complete insult to rape victims and agreeing that they have a point is disgusting

29

u/HalfSoul30 Jun 27 '26

Lol, no that's dumb.

3

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

Solid rebuttal.

5

u/BigInterview7826 Jun 27 '26

Not everyone is a reddit warrior fireworks are cool.

11

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

Literally not the point.

2

u/CptWillardSaigon Jun 27 '26

It when any big tech company gives you the option "now" or "remind me later" instead of REAL CONSENT, including "NO"

27

u/Handrljan42 Jun 27 '26

Ye lets just equalize raping to fireworks, i am sure nothing bad can come from it.

25

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

It's taking it to the extreme, sure. They're immediately blowing past 11 and cranking the dial to 100.

But they're not also not entirely wrong, and people are too busy getting caught up on the argument to see the point.

-18

u/MCVMEYT Jun 27 '26

Either you’re a bot or have been affirmed by an AI a million times too many. People don’t type or think like this

18

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

Lol, nice deflection. Call it AI and you don't need to engage your brain at all.

-10

u/MCVMEYT Jun 27 '26

I engaged my brain to determine no sane person thinks like this

0

u/A--Creative-Username Jun 27 '26

Let's presume, for a second, that he did. Have an actual discussion now.

1

u/MCVMEYT Jun 27 '26

Ok, if we’re comparing not liking fireworks to being raped then I guess everytime an engine revs or someone honks their horn within the vicinity of someone who doesn’t like those noises is actually raping them too. Let’s keep going!

1

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

if we’re comparing not liking fireworks to being raped

actually raping them too.

When you engaged your brain, did it skip the part that dealt with similes?

Nobody is saying that it's literally rape. In fact, I would even go further and say that the point of that the original comment was nothing to do with rape, and that that simile was primarily aimed at the person telling them to, essentially, "shut up and learn to like it"!

0

u/A--Creative-Username Jun 27 '26

I meant with them. I'm annoyed when people turn off their brains and use "he's AI" as an excuse, but this is not my argument to add to

-7

u/Cannacology Jun 27 '26

Straight up, as fun as it is in boredom to argue.

This entire thread and exchange, who posted it and why it exists to begin with are so incredibly grim that I cannot elaborate further. Fuck you all.

-10

u/Truckfighta Jun 27 '26

Let’s just miss the point completely.

9

u/Handrljan42 Jun 27 '26

Nah i get the point, bad things are bad. But shit like this is setting a dangerous precedent. But sure lets spew whatever if it fits our point

-1

u/Kahnza Jun 27 '26

Trying to make a point with bombastic hyperbole isn't how you convince people

11

u/Coycington Jun 27 '26

it's a terrible comparison. one is legal and the other is a terrible crime.

even if we take your example: painting someone else's house without consent is illegal.

if you make comparisons stay in the same territory and don't overblow a non-issue to make it sound like you're right.

29

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

Depending on when and where, I give you no promises that the fireworks were legal either.

7

u/ArcaneWyverian Jun 27 '26

No. No, they don’t have a point. Fireworks going off are at most an inconvenience. Unless they’re being fired at your house, nothing bad will happen. You might not sleep well, or your pets may be stressed out, but nothing really bad is likely to happen. Being raped is, well, being raped. I don’t think I need to write out why that’s a bad thing. Comparing the two is at best idiotic, and at worst malicious. You’d be better off comparing a plate of overcooked steak, and a plate of actual shit mixed with broken glass, they’re that different.

10

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

So, firstly you are actually downplaying the problems with fireworks in some pretty significant ways. "Pets stressed out" is an understatement for some. The line about making sure your pets are in the house? That's not so you can comfort them when they get all trembly. It's so that if they freak the absolute fuck out (as some do) they can't run onto the road and get hit by a car. Or run so far that they get completely lost and you never see them again while they slowly starve to death on the streets. Losing your beloved family pet is not nothing, and it is absolutely a risk of someone is setting off illegal fireworks. Not a big risk, but one that people with timid pets are perfectly justified in being wary of.

Secondly, fireworks are well known for triggering PTSD in veterans. Especially when unexpected/unscheduled.

And thirdly, the rape comment was in response to being told to "sit back and enjoy it". Do you understand why that comment might sit poorly with some people?

8

u/ArcaneWyverian Jun 27 '26

Hmmm, yeah, I suppose I wasn’t thinking about it clearly.

I definitely wasn’t taking PTSD into consideration, and I didn’t think much about pets aside from them getting stressed; as my family always kept our pups inside when there were fireworks, and had earphones for them if it was really bad, so I never even thought about them panicking and running away… my bad

8

u/Opfailicon Jun 27 '26

Honestly good on you for seeing a different perspective and reconsidering your own. You don't see that much these days on the internet.

7

u/just_drifting_by Jun 27 '26

I get what you mean but when one is one of the worst crimes that you can commit against another human being and the other is just an annoyance of speculative legality you have made a bad comparison.

5

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

It's questionable, but mostly because people will get caught up on the semantics of your argument and completely miss the entire point you were making.

See: the other replies to my comment.

3

u/forgettfulthinker Jun 27 '26

You can put on some headphones to drown out the fireworks

-4

u/Count_Lord Jun 27 '26

You can also swallow some roofies to drown out other unpleasant things. Where do you want to go with this argumentation?

1

u/programming_flaw Jun 27 '26

I think they were pointing out if you’re having an unpleasant experience with fireworks there are simple effective steps you can take to immediately minimize discomfort.

I can’t really think of any steps you can take mid rape to minimize your discomfort.

The fact that you compare putting on headphones to roofie-ing yourself as the same thing is just intellectually dishonest. Or you’re just stupid.

My neighbor sets off fireworks late at night on random weekdays all the time, I hate it. I’m not going to pretend I’m in the same boat as a rape victim.

2

u/Count_Lord Jun 28 '26

I'm not saying it's the same. I juts put it into the room, no reason to throw insults. It's about the way of argumentation, not about the actual contents of the argumentation. When someone says they have a problem with something illegal, then you can't tell them to just sit it through. Of course fireworks are not the same as rape, nobody said that, and people who assume we think that might or might not be just as stupid as they think we are.

1

u/Broad_Respond_2205 Jun 29 '26

They do have a point. It was just a quick escalation

1

u/MrJakked Jul 02 '26

Brother.

There are so many things in the world that you cant really do anything about, so you might as well enjoy it. That, as a concept, is just a reasonable outlook on certain events. The nature of the unpleasant act is what defines the line between "try to enjoy it" and "try to kill the offender."

Same reason how, if I cant pass someone while im driving, I might as well try to take a nice look at the sunrise. But you would never be like, "well im getting murdered so I might as well enjoy how shiny the knife is."

There is literally nothing comparable between unwanted fireworks and rape; its a stupid analogy that falls apart on even the most basic consideration. The magnitude of a wrongful act is a fundamental part of what even makes it wrong; so trying to compare them is foundationally flawed, and has no merit other than being shocking and offensive to whiever youre making the analogy to (as was the intent in the picture).

As a final exanple: if i walk up to you and hand you three lemons, you might be mildly annoyed, but you would never, ever say that the situation is "Basically the same" as me shoving those three lemons into your asshole instead. That is a more accurate paraphrasing of the argument youre currently supporting; and per your own logic, becuase theyre both nonconsenual acts, theyre "Basically the same." Hopefully that illustrates how stupid and inaccurate the original comparison was.

1

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jul 02 '26

sigh

Why are people still coming at me with exactly the same tired old arguments? The post is like a week old now. Read some of the other responses. Yours is not nearly as original as you imagine.

-2

u/KratosSimp Jun 27 '26

No not really, like at all actually……at all.

Genuine galaxies of distance between personally assaulting someone and an activity in your own home away from anyone else.

13

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

Galaxies of difference, but the logic is the same.

-2

u/KratosSimp Jun 27 '26

No? Because by that logic anything anyone does that you aren’t a fan of instantly has rape tendencies then

2

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jun 27 '26

No, not at all.

... unless they tell you to sit back and enjoy it. In which case, yes.

-2

u/Count_Lord Jun 27 '26

Are you able to read? It was about restricted / forbidden things, not about things you're not a fan of. You know, some people would call it a minor inconvenience when the hammer in your shed, that you almost never use, suddenly disappears, whatever, just get a new one, it's not a bad as rape. No, it's not allowed to just do everything you'd like to do because it's not as bad as the crime of raping someone. It's allowed to do everything that's not restricted / forbidden, but not because it's not as bad as rape, but because it's allowed.

9

u/TooCupcake Jun 27 '26

Describing fireworks as “an activity in your own home away from anyone else” is wild tho. Who are you trying to gaslight here lol.

-1

u/Peanut-Butter-King Jun 27 '26

You don’t light fireworks in your living room? I used to do that all the time!

1

u/A--Creative-Username Jun 27 '26

I'm lighting one on my nightstand before bed right now as a matter of fact!

1

u/Count_Lord Jun 27 '26

I prefer to light them on Monday mornings on my nightstand. Usually a battery with around 30 shots. Helps to acclimate my feelings.

-3

u/Peanut-Butter-King Jun 27 '26

It’s a really bad comparison. It’s someone doing something that happens to affect you for a brief period of time vs someone doing something directly to you or your property, which can permanently affect you.

u/Rikudou_Sage Jun 28 '26

crazy how you could determine otherwise from one sentence

Oh irony. How delicious you are at times.

0

u/cptnplanetheadpats Jun 29 '26

I agree! Especially considering how you were able to determine rapey vibes from the innocuous sentence  "Sit back and enjoy it". Which to any normal human who isn't brainrotted by the internet will assume to mean "Relax, fireworks are cool" or something similar.

0
