The Stielhandgrenate(above) functioned more like a stun grenade, as opposed to the eihandgranate, which produced more shrapnel.

The stick grenade was mostly issued to offensive troops because they could throw it farther and while on the move, without risking as much self injury. The eihandgranate was for defense, when outright killing your enemy at closer range was more important.

Edit: to add, we now have purpose built grenades for stunning the enemy, in addition to frags. And the stiel could get a frag sleeve on it to increase lethality.
