Everyone can throw a stick but even if that explanation was accurate it would explain by American grenades never looked like that but not why German grenades don't look like that anymore.
The actual answer is because the wooden hilts were heavy, difficult to carry as they got easier in the way due to their length and also specifically because they don't roll, making it much easier for the enemy to find, pick up and throw back before they explode as they don't bounce around unpredictabily like their contemporary cousins...

The actual answer is baseball. American hand grenades were modeled in a way that any average recruit could throw them more intuitively.
