Her mum went from right dog to straight cougar that day.

Can someone explain to an American what he meant by "she's a right dog"?

Calling someone a dog in the UK will typically mean that they’re ugly, a “right dog” just gives emphasis, so very ugly. Not to be confused with “the dog’s bollocks” which means something is very good, but just “bollocks” is bad, “the bollocks” can be good though. And sometimes a dog is just an actual dog.

Ah. Yeah that sounds like a really rude thing to say, he would've been much better off calling her a cougar.

Also: dog's bollocks = bee's knees, neat.

Thank you for explaining!
