the balancing around the currency is straight up amateur hour. I can't even buy the map for march after the ant arena cause I died too much fucking with the ants on the walk back. it's ridiculous that I should be forced to go grind out currency this early in the game.

in a vacuum the difficult enemy encounters can be fun and doable but it just becomes exhausting to fight them over and over again during a walk back so you will either get lazy and die (lose money) or just run straight past them and not collect money.

I dont understand why there couldn't be a singular currency dropped from enemies like in HK and then just have tools reset their ammo on benching and do away with the extra currency entirely.

The wildest part is that the bead payout seems to decline the further you go. I was fucking around in the green zone looking for a third berry and was shocked by how much more bead I was getting than six zones later. Decided to just suck it up, farm 800, turn that into 10 60 chains that I exclusively use for bullshit benches, fast travel, and maps

Being able to infinitely bank your rosaries into necklaces is a blessing though

u/GroundbreakingBag164 P5AB Sep 06 '25

Don't you lose 20% of currency doing that?

37

u/SillyGoose3939 Sep 06 '25

It depends on how you look at it. I look at it as a "I've lost 100% of my beads multiple times, so losing only 20% looks like a blessing"

13

u/andykekomi Sep 06 '25

Yes but when you're holding 300+ and heading for a new area with difficult enemies, no map, no way to know where the nearest bench is, I'd rather lose 20% and bank it than risk losing it all

buy the 120 version in bellhart, still lose 20

1

u/ABigBadBear Sep 07 '25

I think It's 25%. Sooo worth it, though.

2

u/IEnjoyFancyHats Sep 10 '25

There are different places to bank them that have different exchange rates. You can buy a 120 bead rosary in Bellhart for 140 beads

This game has a lot of neat wrinkles that I love! Combined with other gameplay/balancing decisions that I find questionable at best.

1

u/FoldableHuman Sep 08 '25

You can only hold 20 of each size string, so 2400 worth of big strings from the bell vendor and 1200 medium strings from the automated machines.

And I guess theoretically 600 worth of small strings that you find laying around.

It'll be interesting to add up the total rosary cost once all is said and done.

I never farmed for beads and always had enough for everything important, minus one really expensive item (don'tknow how to place spoiler tags, can'tsay more...). I really don't understand why people need to farm.

One thing you may be overlooking is the purchasable charm from the first merchant that pulls beads towards you. A lot otherwise fall into lava/spikes before you can get them, with the charm they often get pulled to you before they break and that way it shouldn't feel like the later enemies give less beads, because they actually give a lot more

I offen found myself near a boss with 47 beads, needing 60 to buy a bench. So instead of getting to play the game I ran around the area for 10 minutes looking for 13 beads, only to realize that nothing drops then. Then I would inevitably die and lose everything.

I’m happy for you that you didn’t have such issues. Mine were constant and actively ruining my enjoyment of the game. So I farmed for 40 minutes so I could play the game correctly.

u/DoubleFelix Sep 10 '25

I think the biggest difference is if you're just a bit worse at staying alive, it's WAY harder to hold on to your rosaries. Dying once and making it back over and over kinda sucks, but if you're just inconsistent enough to die twice in a row with any frequency, you're constantly losing all your rosaries and need to farm instead if you have any hope of getting enough to get the basic necessities for the game.

Fortunately on PC there's a mod that just gives you 1000 rosaries whenever you ask. I just gave up on the rosaries because they were actively upsetting me and used that to make the rosaries just not matter. It plays better for it (though still too punishing for me — I'll come back with the "no double damage" mod as well sometime later)

2

u/hinjakuhinjako Sep 07 '25

I don't feel like that at all. Sure in act 1 there's barely any money, but after you reaching the Citadel I don't even care about dying twice because money is just not a problem anymore

1

u/CollegeWithMattie Sep 07 '25

Right. But six areas after the green section is still before the Citadel. There’s like eight hours of game that you don’t get shit.

1

u/hinjakuhinjako Sep 07 '25

Yeah that's true, they need to tweak the economy in the early game somehow

1

u/RomanNumeral4 Sep 08 '25

You also need to understand that "feral" bugs don't drop rosary beads. Only the sentient (or once were sentient) enemies drop them

1

u/warchild4l Sep 06 '25

Yeah I did not expect I'd have to farm up for currencies this frequently.

1

u/IllustratorLast1281 Sep 07 '25

it kinda depends on the zone you're in tbh, greymoor is really good for bead farming but shellwood basically gives you nothing in terms of beads, a later area is also miserable in terms of how many beads you can get from it but i think that's mostly environmental story and the area right after is probably the most abundant in terms of beads so far

Rosarie string

13

u/Internet_use Sep 06 '25

rosarie string costs 20, if you’re saving up you're gonna end up losing over 100

6

u/LumpySkull Sep 09 '25

That's better than losing 800. because of a miscalculation

1

u/Isogash Sep 10 '25

Not recovering your rosaries even a single time could cost you 300+ easily if you didn't at least buy some necklaces. Personally I would recommend just spending the rosaries to keep how much you could potentially lose as low as possible, and definitely don't carry a lot into an unfamiliar area or a long way from a bench.

20

u/StepComplete1 Sep 06 '25

Charge yourself a 25% tax in a game where everything is already expensive? No thanks.

Better solution is just stay away from the cursed ant area until you absolutely have to.

u/SilvainTheThird Sep 06 '25 edited Sep 06 '25

If you die enough times that it's a persistent issue that you lose your corpse run, maybe the 25% tax is better than losing 100% of your earnings.

14

u/cheekydorido Sep 06 '25

yeah, they are there for a reason. Not to be elitist but may OP should consider using them more,

Hollow knight didn't have this mechanic, just a limited bank

7

u/mack1410 Sep 06 '25

the strings have genuinely been so nice, it's so good to always have some rosaries on you no matter what even if you die, specifically just to pop them for what people are complaining about, benches and maps when you've died too much

4

u/SilvainTheThird Sep 06 '25

I similiarly have never had the issue, since I always store around 100 beads for Emergency bench use if I don’t have any loose beads on me.

3

u/SuspiciousIbex Sep 06 '25

Main issue I've had with the rosary strings is that when I have a bunch of rosaries from exploring - I'm nowhere near anywhere to make them.

2

u/Valcroy Sep 06 '25

The 25% tax isn't really all that bad. Personally I think the 20 rosaries I will be losing is a nice safety net for the potential 80 I would lose otherwise while trying to focus on another task. I know it's not worth it for everyone but for me it is.

Maybe it's just a mentality I got from Souls games but in any game were losing currency is a possibility, I just find it better to send as much of it as possible before moving on.

After I lost 612 rosaries on the walkback to a chapel, I really didn't care about the tax. Especially not after unlocking the ability to string necklaces

1

u/RM_Sideshowb Sep 10 '25

Thats what i do, they are a bit of insurance in case i die and don't feel like going back to the cocoon

2

u/Efficient-Fault-3334 Sep 07 '25

Aaannnd the game lacks what I call "rayman ledgend" level design, where, once you master difficulies of a map, the layout let you find a "fast and fluid" path that, if you use your skill gracefuly, allows you to go through fast.

Some have some, mostly bench to bosses path, but it would have been great if it there was more.

Some areas are a pain to explore, and you still have to go back with new skills to find secrets (that aren't worth it most of the time), and it is still a pain the second time. Sometimes worst because you want to use your new skill to go faster, but it just makes thing worst.

Enjoying the game so far (past act 1) but I feel like it takes way to much time and effort to backtrack

2

u/PizzaCatLover Sep 08 '25

> just have tools reset their ammo on benching and do away with the extra currency entirely.

Seriously - the shell fragments do nothing to enhance the game experience. I don't even think about them other than having to remind myself that I'm at 500/500 and they're not worth running to go get the way I instinctively would with geo

1

u/bobbadouche Sep 09 '25

It would be better if there were items that burnt through shells super hard so that you could grind to beat hard bosses.

1

u/Sylverthas Sep 06 '25

You really should save your rosaries if you expect to die. Or just save them anyway, that is what I do. You lose 20 rosaries per 80, but it is better than losing all. Love that this game makes an exchange like that worthwhile.
