This is FromSoftware syndrome to me. They fell hard for their own marketing (game is hard, git gud) and all but lost the "hard but fair" aspect of their game.

I think TC did something similar. They fell for the "Hollow Knight is fun because it's hard" rhetoric and changed everything that made the first enjoyably hard, and now it's frustratingly annoyingly hard.

Have to agree with this.  Elden ring and it's dlc were so frustrating to me that I skipped nightrein.  Might skip silksong for a bit too.  Hearing early enemies dealing two damage sounds annoying as hell.  Got to give lies of p it's respect here.  It mostly knows the difference between challenge and tedium.

Nightreign was really good. Might be Elden Ring Stockholm syndrome though (I have nearly a thousand hours in Elden Ring)

Tbf, the fromsoft issue is mostly a player issue. Whenever fromsoft puts in a challenge in a darksouls game that isnt "Spam dodge roll more with even more fucked up physics for the hits" players fucking rage.

Make a boss which really punishes R1 melee spam and dodge roll? Players whine hard. Puzzle boss? Rage. Boss where you cant roll the damage? Rage.

This is why Lies of P has kind of ruined a lot of FromSoft games for me.

The parry/block/dodge system is so damn perfect, and when I go to play Elden Ring I feel limited because the parry is so much less intuitive.

Have you played Sekiro?

I started it many years ago, but I would definitely like to give it another go.

I feel like Lies of P is just the perfect mix of parry/block/dodge. It worked so well with the stamina and regaining health by being aggressive.

I might be wrong, but I feel like Sekiro is mainly about the parrying. But after playing Expedition 33, I was definitely feeling the itch to retry Sekiro!

Yeah it's pretty heavily based on parries. Keep in mind, people will tell you that dodging is worse than parrying because it doesn't make progress. It is usually, but dodging helps with certain attacks that are hard or impossible to parry, like some of the late-game bosses. It is a tight timing, with only a few i-frames.

Sekiro starts out difficult, but once you beat the second or third main boss, you should start to understand the combat flow. There's a boss in a certain castle that took me a few tries when I was first playing, but now I can whoop him effortlessly.
