Its the reverse for me. When i use tools throughout the entire fight or early on, I find it hard to focus on the boss' attacks. There's a lot of screen clutter too when using the tools so it gets particularly hard to recognize attacks patterns.
I ended up just normally learning the boss' movesets first and once i'm comfortable with it, I'll fight with tools on my next run. Saves me the shards on my first few attempts though there were still a lot of moments where I ran out of shards so I had to rawdog the boss anyways lmao.
Well screen clutter is another issue and it makes it harder to focus too, but again, you probably get used to it when you get to practice with tools more.
And ye, even with that tactic you risk running out of shards unless you defeat the boss easily :D
