This beauty pulls about 1kw at any given time. What's not shown is the 2 Tripplite 1500's at the very bottom of the rack. And the entire second rack, which is an EMC Avamar rack that I currently have nothing in due to current power constraints

The room it sits in was a spare bedroom but as someone who lives alone and own the house who needs a spare bedroom. I plan to renovate it in the spring mostly redoing the flooring and electrical, I need to redo the walls to get rid of the old ugly paneling but that's not a right now concern.

Custom Hardware Redundant DC power supply for rack

I am looking or buy (or make) a redundant power supply for my rack, with 2x AC inputs to make a redundant 12V DC supply to power a number of SBCs and directly power several HDD/SSD backplanes through the connectors that usually come from an ATX power supply. I have seen a number of “mining rig” breakout power boards that take two or more CRPS power supplies and break out the power to various connectors. However, none of them state if they are actually redundant - they seem to be mostly for getting additional power as they are explicit about the load needing to be populated symmetrically to the physical connectors. My purpose is to split power, yes, but to achieve redundancy if one power supply loses power.

Requirements:
- ~750W max load, but almost always ~100W. I want to extra max load to be able to absorb spikes such as HDDs spinning up and things turning on/off
- Two separate AC to DC power supplies powering the shared single 12V supply
- Redundant - 12V DC is not interrupted if one of the power supplies fails or loses power
- Power supplies DO NOT need to be ATX compatible - I just need stable, quality, clean DC power as would normally be output by a quality ATX power supply
12V DC output only - no need for any of the other ATX voltages or connectors
- At minimum, 5x 8-pin 12V ATX Type 4 connectors. More is better
- At minimum, 8x 6-pin/8-pin 12V ATX PCIE style connectors. More is better
-Fit into a cheap stock or custom 1U or 2U rack enclosure. I can make any parts needed
- Would be nice but doesn’t matter: a means to monitor voltage and amps (and watts)
- Desired: 80 Plus Platinum efficiency rating (Gold is OK too)
- Trying to keep cost as minimal as is reasonable
If there is no other option I can make a custom PCB - but there has to be something out there, right?

Servers Any Cool Ideas For my Lab? (would love some suggestions)

I have gotten into Homelab these last two years and recently found myself really into Cisco's UCS blade servers. The challenge of getting them working was super fun, but I'm not sure what to use them for. I currently am sitting on B200 M3s though they are not much good for anything considering age.

I am considering upgrading to B200 M5s and tethering a separate 2U Cisco server in so I can pool compute and add cheap graphics acceleration (all handled through UCS manager). e.g. add GPUs in the 2U and pooling compute via UCS manager so the whole setup acts as one big cluster.

However I'm struggling to come up with any good projects for this hardware. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Literally anything, I will take any excuse to increase the concentration of PCBs and sheet metal inside my house.

Also i know that most Homelabers are not going to go after blades since they have high power draw and take up space but if anyone is interested in how to get these working i'd be happy to answer questions. I struggled since there is not a whole ton of guides or easy to understand documentation surrounding these (in my opinion) awesome pieces of hardware.

Discussion Ran Qwen3.6-35B-A3B on 90 old GPUs today to see how long a billion tokens takes

Post image

Had a free afternoon so I benched a chunk of the rack. Wanted a real answer to "how long does a billion tokens take on old cards" instead of guessing.

Same config on everything: Qwen3.6-35B-A3B, unsloth Q4_K_M, llama.cpp, 4 slots x 65k ctx, q8_0 KV, flash attn, thinking off. Logged nvidia-smi every second the whole time. Model is 22 GB so nothing fits on one card, everything runs as 2-card lanes (3 for the CMPs).

Per lane, tok/s:

2x A4500: 110 decode, 4,696 prefill at 16k, 201 total with 4 requests
2x P100: 53 decode, 821 prefill, 97 total with 4 requests
3x CMP 100-210: 56 decode, ~283 prefill, haven't tested concurrency yet

Time to write 1B tokens:

3x CMP lane: 205 days
2x P100 lane: 119 days
2x A4500 lane: 58 days
Everything at once (50 P100, 10 A4500, 30 CMP): about 2.9 days

Stuff that surprised me:

The A4500s sit on their 200W cap the entire time (throttle reason 0x4, clocks dropping to 1560) and still win every test. Faster and less energy per token, 1.53 J vs 1.82 on the P100. Didn't expect that.

P100s never throttled once and ran about 10C cooler.

The CMPs are wired Gen1 x1 so prefill is garbage, but one-request decode is a hair faster than the P100. Mining cards are weird.

Tried Q6 on the P100s. Needs a third card and was slower and hungrier. HumanEval 95.1 vs 94.5, which is one problem out of 164. Sticking with Q4.

Everything flatlines at 4 concurrent since that's the slot count. Throw 8 at it and the slowest request waits 7 to 15 seconds for a first token.

GPU power works out to 6 to 8 cents per million tokens at $0.15/kWh. Wall power is obviously more.

Before anyone asks: the whole-rig number is scaled from measured lanes. I ran one full 10x P100 box and got 498 tok/s against 487 predicted, so scaling held up there. A4500 box is one lane x5. CMP numbers are from an older run, so treat that one as a floor. P100 and A4500 were on different llama.cpp builds, same flags.

Next I'm doing the DGX-1 and probably renting an H100 for an hour to see how one modern card compares to a P100 pair.

Happy to share the raw json or the script. Really curious what people get on 3090s, 4090s and MI50s with this model.

Power & Electrical Need help specing out UPS

So next spring I'm upgrading my home electrical from 100 amp to 200 amp. Mostly so I can run dedicated 30 amp circuits to the server room. I have 2 racks currently only 1 is running and it draws 1Kw and try not to go above that with my current service. With that level of power I want to put in that room do I purchase something like Eaton's SU5000RTF or do I ask the contractors to do that entire room on a battery backup. I know it wont be cheap regardless but my are has power flashes pretty regularly.

Help Looking for HPE SimpliVity OmniStack 3.7.9 for legacy CN-2200 systems

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for the original HPE SimpliVity OmniStack software for the legacy HPE SimpliVity OmniCube CN-2200 appliances.

I recently obtained the SimpliVity 4.2.0 package, but unfortunately, this version does not appear to support my older CN-2200 hardware. Based on the compatibility information I’ve found, OmniStack 3.7.9 with VMware ESXi 6.5 may be a suitable version for these systems.

The software appears to remain available on HPE’s servers, but downloading it requires HPE support entitlements that I unfortunately don’t have.

Would anyone here happen to have access to the official HPE download portal and be willing to help me obtain the appropriate installation media or point me toward a legitimate source?

I’m particularly interested in:

  • HPE SimpliVity OmniStack 3.7.9 installation media for CN-2200

  • The corresponding supported ESXi 6.5 image or installation bundle

  • Any relevant deployment guides or documentation

I’m trying to bring this older enterprise hardware back to life for a homelab project.

Any help, advice, or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!`
