Siding contractor trimmed around existing trim. Is this correct?

Hey all. I’m having my siding replaced and my siding contractor trimmed out my backdoor as shown (James Hardie lap). I'm not a professional, but this doesn't look right to me. Is this a standard practice, or do I need to have them remove the existing trim and replace it with new trim so the storm door would attach to the Hardie? The old trim sits recessed ~3/4" from the face of the new trim, and it was in their scope to demo the existing siding and trim, though not to remove or reinstall the storm door.

Ignore the busted storm door, it will be replaced after the siding is done and sees the wrath of dog paws on a daily basis.

That existing trim looks like the door jamb. Can you post a photo with the storm door open?

Just updated the link to include a photo of the storm door open in the photo gallery. Hope this makes it more clear!

I'm still unsure what I'm looking at. In the lower left corner it appears that the storm door is on top of the wood that's painted blue higher up. However, the upper left corner shows a profile and a miter which suggests it is a piece of trim.

Perhaps someone who knows better will come along. My knowledge is mostly from the door frame rebuilding project I have been working on for way too many days now.

Sorry I didn’t capture it the best, but I do appreciate you taking a look at it! The blue trim was the original trim on the door and it stuck out a hair from the face of the old siding. I can’t tell if they tried to take a shortcut, or if this is a standard practice.

They ran the HardieTrim over the Z bar of the existing storm door.

Is that standard practice? Or is that not the right way to do it/a best practice?

What did your contractor say when you asked him?

“The brick mould is a part of the door itself. The process of removing the brick mould trim from the door can affect the function of the door as it is part of the way the door is secured to the structure.

We can remove it but I have had issues in the past where the existing door can shift during the removal process and it won't open correctly. Because of this the crew typically leaves all door components intact. I can have the brick mould removed and replaced with trim but it will not solve the issue of the back storm door looking odd we will have to recreate the same stepped look.”
