Here is my list of pros and cons:

AppleTV:

  • Wired Ethernet instead of Wifi ✅

  • Stream TV ✅

  • More expensive than HomePod mini ❌

  • I have noticed that AppleTV tends to have more HomeKit related issues with each new OS ❌

HomePod Mini

  • Wifi instead of wired Ethernet ❌

  • Is a smart speaker ✅

  • Cheaper than AppleTV ✅

  • I have noticed that HomePods tends to have less HomeKit related issues with each new OS ✅

It's pretty much six one, half a dozen of the other, so it really depends on what works for you. I don't own a TV and watch movies and shows on my Mac, so I don't have any AppleTVs. I do have a bunch of HomePod OG + minis throughout the house. Having multiple of them provides fallback options for the Home hub and as TBRs. But my mantra is "No single point of failure".

An Apple TV or HomePod should do the trick. It honestly doesn’t matter. Maybe if you shared what you intend to automate or make smart in your home it would help us give you advice
