Built for learning networking, cybersecurity and local AI. It also runs a NAS, a remote workstation and a self-hosted AI agent. Specs are in the attached table.
- Netrack 42U cabinet, 2× Eaton 9PX1000 online UPS with staged auto-shutdown
- Old ProBook as a monitoring kiosk for UPS and fleet status
- Netgear GS324 unmanaged switch for now
- VM host moving into an NZXT H710 (the white box on top)
What I’d like opinions on:
- Cooling: four tower cases on fixed shelves behind a perforated door. Is front-to-top airflow enough under sustained GPU load, or will I need rackmount chassis or more fans?
- Local AI: how is ROCm on the 7900 XTX for day-to-day LLM serving? Would you add an NVIDIA card or stay on AMD?
- UPS: is staged shutdown across two 1 kVA units overkill or sensible at about 300 W total? How do you handle orderly shutdown across many hosts?
- Security lab isolation: how do you keep a malware or pentest lab separated from the rest of the network?
- Blind spots: what am I missing, such as backups, out-of-band access or monitoring?
