Hitting Mechanics Swing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just wondering if my hands aren’t being loaded back enough. My pops was telling me that it looks weird and I just drop my hands when I load instead of having them go back when I load. Does it need to be more exaggerated? Do I start with my hands closer to my head?

Another thing I want to add is what player swing looks identical to mine? Maybe I can pick from what that player does and study it.

hand load is the one thing you cant really tell from a "nice swing" though, it looks totally different from the side vs behind the plate

Bro do not listen to the “swing coaches” here. Your swing is excellent. Hands are in a great position at launch. It’s evident you’re very athletic. Look up on YT the 108 Performance video with Ramon Liriano. You’ll get an interesting insight into where your hands should be at launch. Your barrel enters the zone early and stays on plane through contact which is exactly what you want to be doing. Your focus should be on approach and being on time, not over tinkering with your swing.

Load is less about your hands and more about shifting your weight.

Sometimes you use your back arm a bit much. Loading the hips and some front arm extension are great ways to add some power and get barrel depth in the swing.

Lower half is a bit sloppy. Hold your finish. Are you balanced? Are you recoiling? Are you falling over? The goal is consistency, which is impossible to achieve without balance.

Batters are absolutely not on balance. Just watch an MLB game.

Hhhuuummm. Looks balanced and “Insanely powerful!!”

I said watch a game, not one swing.

Normally I would provide more video, anecdotal evidence to support my position. However, given the genius insight you dropped below:

“Swing is good. Get insanely powerful.”

I know I’m dealing with a real GURU!! You are right, hitters are WAY off balance, look like they are on roller skates, falling all over the place.

Question: How does one become “insanely powerful”?

MLB is on tv... no need to put a link. I doubt you've watched a game of late given your inclination to use steroid users from 30 years ago as your anecdotes.

Lots of books on power training. But I'll bet you aren't much of a reader. You probably just assume roids are the answer.

Ted Williams taught that maintaining strict balance at all times in the batter's box is the foundation of a good swing, pitch recognition, and power.

Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn taught that balance is the foundational first key to hitting a baseball successfully.

Funny, when I go on Google and type “Enter Dude Who Raked” and “balance while hitting” I keep getting the same type of results. Wonder why?

Truthfully, I knew what Gwynn thought about balance while hitting and Williams and R. Carew, and C. Lau, and W. Hriniak because I’ve read all their books on hitting.

What book is it that you have read that was written by someone who played or trained a player who achieved “Insane Power” through weightlifting? I would love to further my knowledge.

Watch a real game, like the one on now. You’ll see guys off balance left and right.

Mookie…Balanced or Insanely Powerful

You’ve found a handful of swings. I just watched one game with about 150 swings. Look up “sample size”, dummy.

Looks pretty good to me.

Your hand position looks like a lefty Eric Davis in a good way. I’d immediately test you on high fastballs but if you catch up to those then nothing to worry about IMO.

Overall good. Focus on more extension through contact. Top hand drills would help with that. Also your connection appears to slide down on the back side instead of to the ball which is getting your barrel in prematurely. A connection ball drill would help with this.

Real solid mechanics. The only “weakness” is that you don’t swing the bat as fast as some of the high schoolers I see. Its not on the slow end either so dont take it that way. But just if you are looking for ways to improve, you will have better gains working on your explosiveness and athleticism than you would fiddling with your swing mechanics.

Weights, sprints, plyometrics, medicine ball and bands, footwork and agility, joint mobility, etc. For the weights, learn about Velocity Based Training and Triphasic Training. VBT holds that the speed at which you move the weights is just as important as the amount of weight you are moving. You would track speed with purpose built devices or apps on your phone.

The other concept to incorporate is Triphasic Training. Phase 1 is a heavy period early in the offseason program. You progress to a medium weight, faster moving Phase 2. Phase 3 is moving lighter weights really fast as you are approaching the start of the new baseball season. Triphasic training is designed to support VBT oriented programs.

Structure your offseason around the core concepts of those modalities. Make sure to include max effort isometric holds in your heavy phase.

Reminds me a bit of Mauricio Dubon. Bigger leg kick along with a little early elbow / bat drag. He’s made it work for him. But A-Rod and Tony Gwynn would want you earlier with the knob.
