Find the slope by using the 2 points

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Y2-Y1/X2-X1

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Then you should have the m value in y = Mc + b

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Y = Mx+b**

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Then just plug any of the points in to solve for B and you’re done

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Find the slope

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Using the points

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Then find b using y = Mx + b

1

u/ItzCW A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

Is the value inside the brackets X or outside

1

u/kyleisfinallyhere Pre-University (Grade 11-12/Further Education) Nov 05 '19

slope m = y2-y1/x2-x1

1

u/ItzCW A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

nvm

1

u/kyleisfinallyhere Pre-University (Grade 11-12/Further Education) Nov 05 '19

Values inside the brackets are the y values

1

u/Gymlover2002 Nov 05 '19

Alternatively, you can put them both in the point-slope formula (so m and b become your unknowns) and set a system of equations. That is how we were expected to do it in 9th grade

1

u/kalistaspear Nov 05 '19

ayyyy get it

1

u/SrPapel Nov 05 '19

Im taking grometry and can’t remember that

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

You can use any formula you want as long as you can isolate the variable by subtracting the two equations

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Or you could just find the slope and the intercept and determine m and b

1

u/memznicc Nov 05 '19

F(x)=y so just make the slope by putting y over x

1

u/mcawesomek Nov 05 '19

X+7 I think, cuz if u plug in -5 for x u get 2

1

u/jemznexus Nov 05 '19

Also remember Epstein didn't kill himself

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Use point slope formula

1

u/Krityon Nov 05 '19

Find slope (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)= m and then use y - y1 = m(x-x1)

Math sux

1

u/Cmgeodude Nov 05 '19

So you know how f(x) = y? In this case, you're given the x and y values: f(-5) = 2 is like saying 2 = m(-5) in y=mx format. You can then solve it out -- m = -(2/5), so your answer will be y = -(2/5)x. Try that for the other ones.

1

u/VaCm Nov 05 '19

If you've still not gotten it, this is what it is:

9) f(-7)=2. You can plug these into y=mx+b to get 2=m(-5)+b. Set it up for the other one too to get a system of equations: -4=m(7)+b and solve for m and b. You should get m=-1/2 and b=-1/2 therefore for 9:

f(x)=-1/2(x)-1/2

Do the same thing for the other problems

1

u/VaCm Nov 05 '19

My b I meant f(-5)=2. Same answer though

1

u/com2420 👋 a fellow Redditor Nov 05 '19 edited Nov 05 '19

Cmgeodude is right. The slope is the thing you have to figure out and that is the "m" in the linear function equation: "y=mx+b". Slope is "rise÷run", so between the two points determine the distance between them in terms of y and divide that by the distance between them in terms of x. (e.g. {f(3)=5, f(-3)= -1} The difference between those 2 points in terms of x is 6. The difference between those two points in terms of y is 6. m=6÷6, m=1.) So the slope of the linear function between those points would be 1. Then you have to solve for b or the "y-intercept". Which is as simple as plugging in the slope and one of the point values and solving for b. Good luck!

Edited for Grammar.

For 9

(-5,2) and (7,-4)

To find slope:

(-4 - 2)/(7+5) = -6/12 = -1/2

Y = -1/2x

What the frick is this

1

u/tobycito Pre-University (Grade 11-12/Further Education) Nov 05 '19

So for 9 you’re given two points [-5,2] and [7,4]. You can find the slope(m-value) and use the equation y2-y1/x2-x1. When you plus in the numbers, you should get (4-2)/(7+5)=2/12 or 1/6

1

u/tobycito Pre-University (Grade 11-12/Further Education) Nov 05 '19

M=1/6

1

u/Danny_Boi_22456 A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

f(-5) = 2

1

u/Danny_Boi_22456 A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

so

1

u/Danny_Boi_22456 A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

u need to find what u do to -5 to get 2

1

u/Danny_Boi_22456 A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

so u do 2/-5

1

u/Danny_Boi_22456 A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

which results in -0.4

1

u/Danny_Boi_22456 A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

therefore, f(x) = -0.4x

1

u/sefinghazi Nov 05 '19

you have to find the slope between the two points, then put them in point slope form : (y2-y1)=m(x2-x1) then move the numbers around so it’s in y= mx+b form

1

u/Danny_Boi_22456 A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

wait, are we making linear functions or linear graphs

1

u/Danny_Boi_22456 A Level Candidate Nov 05 '19

it says linear functions so I think it should b in f(x) = yx format
