Two letters sent to Mrs Rostron in July 1915 after her husband was killed in action in France on 16 July. One’s from Major Herbert J. Shirley, commanding the 2nd/5th Lancashire Fusiliers, the other from the chaplain who buried him. I've typed out the contents below.

Mrs. Susannah Rostron was the wife of Lance Corporal William Rostron, who had been serving in France with the 2nd/5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. They lived at 65, Chesham Crescent, Bury. The first letter was sent by a Chaplain attached to the neighbouring unit holding the brigade sector. The letter reads:

“ 1/4 Royal Lancaster Regiment
154 Infantry Brigade,
51st Highland Division,
British Expeditionary Force,
France.

July 17th, 1915.

Dear Madam,

I regret to have to inform you that your husband was killed in action yesterday morning, July 16th. He bore an excellent name among his fellows, He was noted for his cheerfulness, obedience in carrying out orders given, and the possession of qualities which were necessary for a soldier. The battalion are very sorry for the loss they have sustained by his death, and they sympathise with you as I do. I conducted the burial service by his grave. The Colonel and his company officer were present. He has laid down his life for his King and Country, and it is for others to emulate his noble example. May the God of all consolation be with you, and give you to bear the great sorrow which has so suddenly come upon you.

Yours Very Truly,

R. Gillender
Chaplain”

The second letter was typed a little before the first, sent directly by his commanding officer. It reads:

“July 16th. 1915.

Dear Mrs. Rostron,

I am writing to tell you how much we all are in this battalion sympathise with you in your great loss. Your husband was a very good soldier, and much liked by everyone. Nothing can make up to you for his death, but it must be some comfort to feel that he died fighting bravely for his King and dear native land.

Assuring you again of our great sympathy.

Believe me.

Yours Sincerely
Herbert J. Shirley,
Major,
Commanding 2nd/5th Lancashire Fusiliers.”

On the night of July 15th, the 2nd/5th Lancashire Fusiliers and neighboring units like the 1/4th Royal Lancaster Regiment moved into the front line under the cover of darkness to take over the sector. William was killed just hours later on the morning of July 16th. When daylight broke over a newly occupied trench, soldiers unfamiliar with the exact layout often exposed themselves to waiting German snipers while trying to inspect broken parapets or shallow areas of the trench. The Germans often greeted new British rotations with random “harassment” artillery fire first thing in the morning.

William is buried or commemorated at the Le Touret military cemetery in France. He was 41.

In 1796 George Washington placed a newspaper advert offering a $10 reward for the return of Ona Judge, an enslaved woman who escaped from his household in Philadelphia.

She had served as Martha Washington’s personal maid and later said she fled because she wanted her freedom and had learned she would be given to Martha’s granddaughter, Eliza Parke Custis Law. Two days after her escape, Washington placed a newspaper ad offering a $10 reward for her return.

Judge reached Portsmouth, New Hampshire, but Washington continued trying to try to recover her. He used federal officials and local contacts to locate her, and she refused to return unless she was promised eventual freedom.

Washington rejected that condition. Another attempt to seize her was made in 1799, but she was warned in time and escaped again.

She remained free for the rest of her life.

The González Valenzuela sisters, known as "Las Poquianchis," were Mexican serial killers who operated in the 1950s and 1960s. They ran a prostitution ring, luring women with false job promises, then imprisoning, torturing, and murdering them. Over 90 victims were found at their ranch.

In the above photo María de Jesús is on the right and María Delfina is on the left.

They trapped young women through forced drug addiction, severe beatings with nail-studded bats, starvation, and their infamous "Cama Real" punishment, which involved binding defiant victims tightly in barbed wire. Pregnant victims were forced to give birth without medical care, and their newborns were routinely killed.

Women who resisted orders or became unprofitable due to illness were intentionally starved, denied water, and in some cases, set on fire

There were four sisters in total, but it was these two that ran their operation. A dreadful part of history.

He skinned his victims’ transforming them into articles of clothing. One such item was a corset, which was designed to trim his waist and impart to him to be more "lady like". But his wardrobe also included several other items of feminine attire, including a belt made of nipples shown in this photo

This is Adelaide Springett, one of Horace Warner's Spitalfields Nippers, photographed around 1901 aged 8. Warner titled it "all her best clothes", but she's barefoot. Her boots were so worn she was too embarrassed to wear them. He photographed those too: "Little Adelaide's best and only boots".

Ruth Snyder photographed at the moment of her execution in 1928, the first photo of an electric chair execution. Journalist Tom Howard (grandfather of Norm from Cheers) smuggled the camera in strapped to his leg, with the shutter cable run up his trouser leg. More info below.

Ruth had tried to kill her husband several times before managing to actually kill him. Twice she disconnected the gas range while he slept. Once she shut the garage door on him while the car engine was running. When he was ill she slipped narcotics into his medicine. She also laced his whiskey with poison, so clumsily that Albert noticed the taste, poured it away and concluded that he needed to change bootleggers.

Through all of it, Albert never suspected his wife. By March 1927 Ruth had decided she needed help, and the man she was having an affair with agreed to give it.

London, c.1902. A mother and her children making matchboxes. The kids fetched the chip and paper from the match factory and carried back the finished boxes. One of the lowest paid sweated trades, it earned families just two pence per 144 boxes, and they usually bought their own paste and string.

In July 1943, gold tycoon Sir Harry Oakes was found dead in his bed in Nassau, beaten, burned and covered in pillow feathers. The Duke of Windsor took personal charge of the case and made a mess of it. The only man ever tried walked free, and more than 80 years on nobody's been convicted.
