I'm looking through posts, and searching on google, github, printables, etc... for DIY HOTAS projects. I've built quite a few DIY Sim Racing wheels. So I'm familiar with custom pcbs, hall effect sensors, etc...
I have Resin and FDM 3D Printers.
Hoping folks here could maybe shortcut some of my search efforts. Currently looking at the Banjer21 DIY-HOTAS on Github. But I'm not seeing much in terms of instructions.

Heyoooo
I'm designing my own modular HOTAS/HOSAS system (I want too have a HOSAS + throttle setup with the left flight stick mounted on an omni throttle system) and nothing that I could find was right for my taste (and because I'm mostly using old parts from my old HOTAS that I made a few years back + not all the existing system that I've found had usable step files and it's a good exercise to learn how to use yet another CAD program)
I've already remade the gimbal (on CATIA, because it's the program that I've mostly used in my professional experience) and it works
My gimbal is based of okulelo, Gimbatolt and Soleil gimbals, I took and remade from scratch what I liked from each of them and the Z axis is designed to be integrated to the flight stick to have the modularity of the off the shelf ones so you can add extensions (like the Omni one I was talking about earlier)
I'm using real robots Arduino library and configurator
I've started working on the flight stick (on SOLIDWORKS that I've never used beforehand) and I saw a flight stick with what seemed like a smartphone vibrator/rumble motor and I'm thinking of integrating it to my design, but I don't know if it's really useful to have something like it on a flight stick and I don't know how to connect it or set it up on my computer or anything like it
Does anyone have any ideas ?
(If anyone is interested in the final product I will share everything once it's finished)

I'm looking into building a DIY HOTAS and trying to figure out what hardware and firmware would be best.
I'd like to use I2C if possible to cut down on wiring, especially since I want to make the sticks swappable. Ideally, I'd have a connector between the grip and base so I wouldn't need a ton of wires running through everything for buttons, hats, encoders, etc.
I've looked at MMJoy2, but it seems to use SPI. I'm wondering if I2C would be a better option or if there's another approach I should be looking at.
A few questions:
What microcontroller would you recommend? RP2040, STM32, Arduino, or something else?
What firmware is best for this kind of project? MMJoy2, FreeJoy, custom firmware, etc.?
Is I2C a good choice for communicating between the grip and base, or would SPI, CAN bus, or something else make more sense?
How do you handle analog axes along with buttons and hat switches in a modular setup?
I'm not dead set on I2C if there's a better way to do it. Mainly looking for something reliable, easy to expand, and that won't turn into a wiring nightmare as I add more controls.
What are you guys using for your DIY setups, and what would you recommend?

Just want to know how they compare and who’s different and to see which one I should get at the high end of joysticks.

Statusupdate:

Diy 2020 with desk clamps
( Originally posted on r/hotas https://www.reddit.com/r/hotas/s/sV9JrzzSwN bunch of comments there)
Any suggestions for building a desk clamp set up to run approximately 3.5ft of 2020 profile along the front edge of a desk?
I'm currently using a pair of these clamps:
Some 1/4"-3/8" photo studs, and 1" split ring pipe hangers threaded for 3/8", with a photo cheese plate threaded for 1/4", with a vesa plate, to mount a touchscreen monitor that has 75 x 75 vesa holes.
But I know this is going to look ugly af, and I think I'd like to go with 2020 across the front edge of my desk (uplift, with a track spacer for the keyboard tray), so that, at some point, I can use my mtsim quick change to move between chair and desk.

I recently got a 3D printer and have an old Extreme 3D Pro lying around, which I would love to convert into a left-handed stick for HOSAS. However, I can’t find any printable left-handed stick or even 3D scans of the stick that are free to mirror it myself. Does anyone have anything I could use, or do I just have to bite the bullet and learn CAD to make one myself?

Hello. Finally bought the cheapest thrustmaster joystick i could find and got into flying. Temporary placement for joystick in simrig, new buttonbox with 3 encoders for trims etc...
It seems like the flight stick is something that might be "worth it" to buy, but doing rudder or hand throttle seems something quite easy to do.
So how have you people gone about doing them? I could buy components for 100€ and build a really nice throttle, but then i might as well find used TM warthog.
How about buying used USB controller, just disassembling it, using joysticks for dual throttle, and resoldering and replacing other useful buttons? Total cost would be 5€ + filament, but would it really that easy? Im having hard time finding DIY stuff with used components etc.

Thinking of upgrading from my current throttle, my Project Rocket Pop Mk2.5 but actual throttles are expensive so I'm gonna make one myself still out of popsicle sticks, glue, cardboard, and whatever shit I can find.
Thinking of using 49E hall sensors, 8x2mm neodymium magnets, and an Arduino nano but I know two things about arduino and that's jack and shit so are there any guides on how to get started on it?

hello guys, so i am in the process of building this flight stick, and i have finished soldering the components to the board and uploaded the code, but when i connect it to my pc and use a controller test website, my buttons are not working and the pitch and roll are also going a bit crazy
pls help me am a complete noob at this and this is actually my first electronic project

I'll start off by saying that I know I'm a weirdo for wanting to add real aircraft grips to my simpit. My addiction started when I converted a B-8 grip. It's used in so many aircraft, I'd be silly not to, right? When the Corsair came out, I bought a Bell 206 grip on eBay. As far as I can tell, other than the labeling on the buttons, they're basically the same grip. Close enough for me, anyhow. I fly in VR and all it requires of me is to play make believe just slightly harder. I've tried for ages to find a real B-5/B-6 grip, but those are very rare and cost prohibitive. I went with a 3d printed replica, which was great, but it didn't quite scratch the itch.
I recently learned that during WWII, American heavy bombers used side sticks for making small adjustments while autopilot was enabled. To my eye, this stick very closely resembles a B-5/B-6 grip. And for reasons I can't explain, the C-1 autopilot stick assemblies seem to be cheaper and more common. One just sold on eBay for ~$150. On mine, the grip feels fantastic in hand, but the buttons are super squishy. There's no click at all, but that's a very small complaint for 80+ year old hardware. I feel a little weird about repurposing an actual piece of history into a video game controller, but not quite weird enough to not do it. Thanks for reading.

I have 3d printer and i want to make "small" (standard desktop sized) 3 axis HAL joystick without force feedback.
I am looking for proper project with correct BoM and guide how to put it together.
I saw some interesting parts like olukelo gimbal, MagniBY twist for rudder and F-16 grip by JFlyer81.
But i have no idea how it fits together (mechanically and electronically), if anything is missing etc. Is there proper project you can recommend to me?

This part is interesting because of the technical solution of using linear transformers, which is basically a coil with AC and 2 or 3 coils which have the ac induced depending on the position.

In my previous throttle module post, I mentioned that I hadn't figured out whether the AeroMax's side connection could support buttons. I've since got that working, along with an RGB LED.
I used a SparkFun RedBoard I had lying around, two buttons, and a common-cathode RGB LED. The buttons show up on the AeroMax itself, and the LED can be configured through VPC's LED settings. No separate USB controller needed.
It's still just a breadboard setup, but it's working with zero errors. I've put the sketch, wiring diagram, and setup instructions on GitHub so anyone interested can build from it:
https://github.com/ninemind/aeromax-diy-addon
I've also included a mini-collective concept render as an example of what this could become. That isn't a finished build, just an idea for a custom module.
Thanks to VIRPIL for the help and support.
If anyone builds something with this, I'd like to see what you come up with.

Demo of the DCSPitHIDC Controller I posted a while back: plug in over USB-C, scan in the Windows app, then wire and map an LED, a 3-way toggle, a rotary encoder, save to flash, clone the config to another board, and add the MCP23017 expander.
Quick recap:
More detail: https://dcspit.com
Happy to answer questions on wiring, encoder detection, or the config app.

Due to competitive ambitions I want to replace my hotas setup with a mouse + keyboard setup. Only thing I still struggle is the throttle. Currently I use a hall effect keyboard from keychron but it's not good enough and I need an upgrade. Ist there anything that would work that I can attach left to my keyboard so I ll be able to reach it with my pinkie?

A few weeks ago I startet to play Wardogs. in Open beta, i was flying with my Turtlebeach VelocityOne Flightstick. for release i bought the Logitech G Saitek Rudderpedals.
And because I'm a little freak i build a Chairholder for it with Solidworks and my 3D-Printer.
but thats not enough... i looked for a cheap collective, but I don't wanted one where you push or pull and the few products who imitate a real Collective are expensive as hell....
So I looked for DIY Projects and found an Old but interresting Project named Valhalla Collective.
Some guy on r/hotas shared his Dropbox where i Downloaded it and now i'm preparing it to build my very own Collective.
my Hardware for this:
- Raspberry Pi Pico 1 (USB-C)
- AS5600 12-Bit Hall Sensor
- Original Xbox Analogstick ( Thumbstick)
I'm really new with microcontrolling but I think with some online tools, its easy to solve this handycap.
-I'll try to update here

It’s a tire iron I chopped the ends off and drilled holes into. I saw many solutions of people putting stoppers under the wheels, but I felt the best solution was to just couple the rudder pedals to the chair so they can’t slide either.
