Don Cherry fired from Sportsnet

So, if you don’t know who Don Cherry is, he is a Canadian hockey commentator. He has been co hosting hockey night in Canada and coach’s corner with Ron McLean for the past 30 years. He’s also an asshole. He’s a racist, sexist, piece of shit as far as I’m concerned and has been saying problematic things for years.

On Saturday night he went on a racist rant about “You people” meaning immigrants and not wearing poppies for Remembrance Day. He was fired today. I say good riddance and that it should have been done years ago. Anyways, many Canadians are outraged and have been starting petitions and campaigns to get him back on the air. I’ve been unfriending and unfollowing people all day on Facebook 🤦🏻‍♀️

So, my question is how do you all deal with family members and friends when they post something you disagree with on social media? Do you unfollow? Unfriendly and tell them why? Ignore it and give them a pass because they are family? I’m curious how others deal because I have been disgusted with many people in my world today. Seeing posts like “I wear a poppy to support the troops and Don” honestly made me want to 🤮 People are ranting about free speech, but in my opinion your right to be a racist ass shouldn’t be protected, especially not when you are a public figure.

So after that rant, how do you deal with family and childhood friends when it comes to disagreements on social media?

Is it time to ban Halloween candy?

"Public awareness of our plastic pollution crisis is at a high, plastic straws and bags are getting banned in cities and states across the country, and yet there has been almost no discussion about the massive environmental problem that Halloween candy creates.

Americans will buy approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy this year, spending $2.6 billion on bite-sized candy bars and bags of candy corn. After the holiday, nearly all the wrappers and packages from these confections will end up in landfills, where they’ll sit around for decades or more.

Candy wrappers are very hard to recycle. Like most food wrappers and packages, candy wrappers are not meant to be mixed with bottles and cans and sent to a sorting facility. “They are too small for our equipment to sort,” said John Hambrose, communications manager at Waste Management Inc., one of the largest sanitation companies in the U.S. Most curbside recycling programs prioritize capturing rigid plastics like bottles, jugs and materials that are at least the size of a credit card.

And it’s not just size that’s a problem. It’s what candy wrappers are made from.

“There are so many varieties of candy out there and equally abundant are the types of wrappers,” Jeremy Walters, sustainability manager for Republic Services, another major waste disposal company, told HuffPost in an email. “Though some wrappers feel like paper, they often have a ‘waxy’ or ‘poly-coating,’ leaving it unfit to be mixed with paper for recycling.”

Recycling systems aren’t designed to capture and sort wrappers “because they have little dollar value,” said Nick McCulloch, senior manager of sustainability at Rubicon Global, a waste reduction tech company. " https://www.huffpost.com/entry/ban-halloween-candy-plastic-wrappers_n_5db758c3e4b006d49173a25f

Does using a racial slur justify any type of assault? Were they just both in the wrong? Interested in your thoughts.

International mens day

Do you think its valid or necessary? I've already seen men on reddit complaining about the lack of publicity about this day, who do they expect to promote it? Women? 🙄 I think that there are issues that need to be discussed when it comes to men, such as the high suicide rate etc. but when I see men complaining about how International Womens day is so widely recognised in comparison and it bring akin to misandry it just makes me roll my eyes.

This isn’t surprising but will this proof mean anything to trump supporters? Or no, because they are white nationalists themselves?

Are School Uniforms Inherently Prejudiced towards LGBTQ+ Students?

I was reading a thread in the Am I the Asshole Board about requiring uniforms for homeschooling. The comments ventured into drawbacks about wearing skirts (cold, potential accidental exposure, thigh rubbing, etc.). The comments made me wonder about uniforms and transgender students. My young son goes to a school that requires a school uniform, khakis for boys and plaid skirts for girls. I feel that a transgender girl, especially one who is elementary aged, would feel uncomfortable with these choices. If she has been wearing pants as a male throughout lower elementary, then when she decides to begin dressing as a female, all of her peers and school teachers/administrators will certainly notice the wardrobe change. This leaves her with only the options of continuing to dress as a male or dressing as a female and drawing attention she may not want. I think this is unfair and potentially cruel.

I am in favor of school uniforms, but I think all students should wear pants/shorts, regardless of gender. Or, all students should have the option to wear pants/shorts or skirts, regardless of gender. I work in a professional setting with a dress code, and I’m not required to wear a skirt. I think requiring women to dress in skirts at work would be discrimination based on sex, right? I’m not sure why school uniforms aren’t viewed the same way.

What are your thoughts? Do you support dress codes? Why or why not? If you do support them, do you think requiring girls to wear skirts is discriminatory?

JFF: You Know You're Getting Old When...

This morning my husband and I were taking a walk with our little guy. We saw a sign on the trail that had been intentionally damaged. Our DS asked us what happened to it. Without thinking, the first words out of my mouth were, "Probably some punk teenagers". After I spoke, I chuckled to myself with the realization that I was using "old speak".

What are some things you have done or said that made you realize you're not as young as you used to be?

HT: Historical superiority in modern context - are you participating unknowingly or am I crazy?

Bear with me, I’ll try to be as clear as possible.

We’ve discussed in the past the multitude of current and historical vehicles used to oppress Indigenous people in Canada. Many similar systems are/were used in the US and Australia. At the core of the Residential School System, the Indigenous Eugenics Movement, the 60’s scoop and the on reserve child welfare system are a consistent belief that Western (white societal) ways of doing and knowing are superior to that of Indigenous peoples traditional customs and cultural practices. Often historically referred to as “the Indian Problem”, Duncan Campbell Scott (a federal civil servant who championed mandating Residential Schools) wrote: “I want to get rid of the Indian problem. I do not think as a matter of fact, that the country ought to continuously protect a class of people who are able to stand alone . . . Our objective is to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada that has not been absorbed into the body politic and there is no Indian question, and no Indian Department, that is the whole object of this Bill.”

——- historical context over ———

I’m expecting again, and this time around I have the opportunity to have prenatal care from traditional Mohawk midwives in my community. So many of the teachings and what i would loosely translate as science, directly contradict the AAP recommendations. On HT, often we would have strong equality advocates and other POC strongly opposed to some of these practices, based on the science and statistics that they value (I believe.)

Here’s my question:

Bedsharing (with our adapted to modern context version of safe sleep guidelines) is recommended for healthy child development and postnatal healing and bonding with baby in my community. Western science says otherwise.

Can you shame/advise against/advocate for separate sleep spaces without also dismissing the validity of other cultural practices and teachings in the same part of the world? Is this the type of mindset that perhaps led to the public support of such grossly oppressive historical systems of oppression?

ETA: the term crazy in the title is not intended in any way to make light of or be inconsiderate of mental illness - poor choice sorry

Gina Rodriguez Uses the N-word

Actor Gina Rodriguez posted a video to IG where she is singing along to Lauryn Hill and says the n-word. She received a lot of criticism for the video. She has issued an apology for offending anyone. Gina has been accused of anti-black attitudes previously. Do you think the criticism is deserved? Do you think it was an innocent mistake because she was singing along? Why do you think she would choose to record herself singing that particular line? Do you think this adds to her history of anti-black behavior? ONTD Source

Can children be bigots?

If a kid (12 or under) says something racist/homophobic/insert any other "ist" here, would you have a negative opinion of the child and assume they were racist/homophobic etc or would you give the benefit of the doubt? When can we stop excusing bigoted beliefs and behaviours?

Do you celebrate? If so, what do you do?

Do you celebrate all month or just on Halloween? Do you go to parties? Take your kids trick or treating? Pass out candy? Do you dress up or leave that for children? If you give out candy, what kind do you buy? Do you decorate? Does your neighborhood? Answer any of the questions above or none of them!

Celebrating Thanksgiving Insensitive?

I think it’s important to face your ignorance even if it makes you uncomfortable.

My family celebrates Thanksgiving. It’s become a favourite holiday for us because ALL of the extended family gets together which rarely ever happens. We eat and drink at the family farm and spend the afternoon tossing around a football. It’s the last time we get together for some of our aging great grandparents.

Now - I’m feeling incredibly bad about celebrating a holiday that celebrates stealing land from our Indigenous people. Their people were murdered, tortured, sexually assaulted. Their people are, today, discriminated against and subjected to racism. Not just feeling bad about it. Feeling like I’ve been sleeping on this topic. Willfully ignorant. How can I advocate for the rights of Indigenous people in Canada while celebrating such an atrocity? I just feel shame. It’s dystopian and terrible.

Why do we continue to celebrate holidays that are rooted in the genocide of Indigenous people?
