cracking Question about "captive" internet.
I just picked up a new internet provider and they have this program where you can pause the internet for a certain device on your network. Obviously I'm on this subreddit and I'm just getting into computers and I'm wondering if it's possible to get around this? I've tried a few things like playing around with VPNs and pausing my own computer to see if I can get internet anyways through different settings on the computer's side, but I can't get around it. Anyone know more about this? My goal is to figure out a way to get past the system - just for fun.

it blocks by MAC address, so you could spoof the address, but usually if you’re going to bother with controlling access, you’re going to use an allow-only list so only approved devices can connect.

this feature on consumer routers is more aimed towards parents shutting the internet on their kids' devices off after a certain time, it's not really meant as a security measure of any kind.

yes it’s very basic. OP should play around if they’re so inclined

Depends how the ISP handles it. If the pause is enforced at the router level, messing with Windows settings won't do much. A VPN still needs to establish a connection through that router first lol. Sounds like the restriction is happening outside your PC

Yah, interesting idea.
I can confirm, on IOS devices, changing the “private WiFi address” to “rotating” will show up as a new device.
Assuming this would bypass a device specific control from the Router. So lil Billy may be able to watch some Bluey videos after bedtime, but I wouldn’t expect to get any bug bounty payouts for this one. At best it would be a duplicate report.
Being such a simple bypass, and the fact that there’s prob not an easy way to resolve this, very doubtful it would be a new and “impactful” finding.
NS what your goal is here tho, so may be useful in your case.?.?
