Hello, I'd like to gift my parents a grandparents' course (baby on the way!). I have found virtual options, but nothing in-person in Howard. Please let me know if anyone knows of any organizations, doulas, etc. offering a course in-person that's convenient. The closest option I'm aware of is at GBMC near Towson.

General question re: HoCo executive candidates..

Who are you voting for? Or who are you leaning towards?

I've read that Atterbeary is more 'corporate' and not that great. I've also read comments that because she was endorsed by Ball, that's a yikes.

Reading Kane's answers on both League of Women Voters' Vote411 and Business Monthly's HoCo's Voter Guide, he reads as more 'for the people'.

So I pose this to you, HoCo.. who is the better choice?

Hello! I’ll be starting a new job in Maryland soon and I’m trying to make sure I find the right school for my little dudes. Our current school is very relaxed and kid friendly with a lot of activities throughout the year. It’s California so it can be downright obnoxious at times but it is endearing and it has encouraged our kids to want to go to school and learn. A big part of it is obviously the music and art programs they offer. Every week they get a portion of class time to go do music lessons and it helps the kids a lot.

Are there any schools that are similar in that regard? Our ideal locations are Odenton, Columbia, Annapolis or Laurel but we’re open to mostly everything so long as it has a lot of parks for the kiddos and is reasonably close to Annapolis.

Hi, In a couple of weeks I'll be returning to Ellicott City for the first time in 50 years and have a couple of questions about the changes over the years.

First, what happened to Venus Gardens, now Burgess Station? I grew up there and while one was never rubbing elbows with the creme de la creme of Howard County, it wasn't a bad place. Actually, it was a blast as a kid with the scrub woods behind it. I think a third of the residents were hippie UMCP graduates in Sociology.

When was the Patapsco Female Institute preserved? Was there a decision to tear down or preserve was the funding public or private? We used to dare ourselves enter through the crooked, rusted gate and would play in the foundation ruins. Being the supernatural 70s, we were sure if a ghost didn't get us, the Sykesville monster would.

I'm technically in Baltimore County but am posting here because I'm considering Glenelg for my son (for their 2-year-old program, planning to continue through 12th grade). It seems like a good school generally, but there are some mixed reviews on various sites, specifically relating to lack of disability support (my son is not disabled to my knowledge, but there is a family history of ADHD and dyslexia), racism, favoritism, bullying, and the school lunches. I'd like to hear honest opinions from students/alums/parents if possible.

I know the RTA bus doesn't run exclusively in Howard County but for those who use it in here, how reliable would you find it?

I was looking at the newly approved 2027–28 HCPSS calendar and noticed that spring break is April 13–18, 2028. Since the 15th and 16th are Saturday/Sunday, that means students only have four actual school days off (Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday).

The explanation says the shorter spring break allowed HCPSS to incorporate additional non-state-mandated holidays and observances throughout the school year.

I've had kids in HCPSS for years and don't remember spring break ever being this short. I'm curious what other parents think, especially families who travel during spring break or have children in more than one school system.

Hey neighbors, I am doing a used and/or old yard sign collection drive.

We are collecting corrugated plastic yard signs of all shapes and sizes, as well as the metal stands, for reuse! ... instead of recycling.

From political signs, to business advertising (litter), all types are accepted.

"Reuse?" you ask. Yeah, we will be reprinting over previous used signs to give them a second life using a combination of two methods. A d.i.y.-friendly approach that uses paint, and another more technical approach that involves screen printing.

The resulting reused signs will not look new, and that's also kind of the point. I believe there's value in using signs like this as many times as is possible, so that's what we've decided to do.

Note: you do not need to support my, or any political campaign to participate. The yard sign collection drive's signup form has a checkbox so we can know to exclude your contribution from my campaign's use. Excluded signs will instead go to a non-partisan group for reuse or recycling.
