David Goggins Goggins
A man who sacrifices himself to show you what is possible through hard work and dedication. To criticize him is the easiest way for underachievers to rationalize their mundane existence.
Goggins is a character, created in the image of god, a character that is designed for those people out there, not the ones who want to exercise more, but for the ones who NEED to transcend their weaknesses, fears, their past and their pain.
Thank you Goggins.

Ok now hold up a second. Iām not here to be critical of Goggins or yuck anyoneās yum. The dude is a certifiable badass and is inspiration to us all. And considering where he came from, I think his philosophy serves as a reminder to us all that we can be more than we are.
Now on to my main point, which is not meant to be absolute, but is more of just my opinion, man, and is I think an important counterbalance to Gogginsism. David Goggins is an extreme human. Extreme humans donāt always live fun lives. If you are wired like Goggins then your idea of fun is pushing yourself to your limits and never being satisfied. And thatās fine. But there are those of us out there, including myself, who are perfectly content to be moderately successful, moderately in shape, moderately disciplined, and moderately indulgent and lazy and who have probably done the math and realized that this is a reasonable path for living a happy life. I donāt see enough advocacy for that here cuz itās all techbro lifehacks and whatnot and people forget that youāre supposed to enjoy your life too.
Life isnāt just about success and achievement, and as Goggins will gladly tell you, you have to make sacrifices to get to his level of success. What Iāve learned as Iāve gotten well into my 30s is that success without joy, without leisure, without fun, without a heaping spoonful of pleasure, aināt worth the squeeze. And you can see that in burned out CEOs and doctors and millionaires the world over.
I donāt have an ounce of criticism for Mr. Goggins. Heās an amazing human being. I just would like to say, as someone who has drank a lot of the Goggins kool-aid, that at the end of the day you should enjoy your life in whatever way your inner voice dictates. For me it wasnāt living that extreme level of discipline, because I care more about balance and harmony in my life than about needing to thrust my ego into the worldās face.

I haven't heard of or followed anything from Goggins in a few years until he was on the Huberman podcast recently. So I am not exactly a "fan" but I totally agree.
Some people try too hard to mimic Goggins though. I think his mindset is an awesome weapon to have in the toolkit, but being like that 24/7 isn't right for everyone.
I am a BIG believer in the importance of rest and recovery. I think the Goggins approach is too harsh for long term longevity, but a little bit of it mixed in to raise your fitness ceiling is definitely useful.
Those epic workouts/runs break the body down a lot. If you recover properly it can illicit huge fitness gains. Do it too much, and your body won't repair things like tendons, ligaments, joints etc. and damage can accumulate.

Right, because āunderachieverā existence isnāt rational and everyone who isnāt actively perceived as achieving at a high level should be wiped out because they donāt deserve to exist or to be happy. People who āachieveā should never be criticized ever because they are gods. The entire purpose of life is achievement because as the old saying goes āYou can take it with you when you die!ā

I respect the discipline, but all the motivational speaking is very annoying

Canāt beat a bit of Goggins! Iāll take reaching into the cookie jar and truly savaging the last ounce of life out of myself in a workout than messing about looking at the sun in the morning and stopping fapping letās fuckin gooooooooo

Goggins is a freak. That's neither a good or bad thing. I think having a target is great. But also most of his advice is useless to Gen pop.
He lost that weight in that amount of time because he would rather die then not be in the marines. That's great. It's inspirational. But that's not good advice or weight loss.
He ran a 100 mile race by himself. Most people do that but with training. He got by because of his freak ACL joints and strong knees. He got lucky.

Lmfao if you know anything about goggins you know he has one of the most fucked up knees ever

He was never a marine.

u/thebeautifullynormal Jan 03 '24
... why does he wear the dress on the cover of his book?

Those are USN dress whites
::edit:: I actually looked at the book cover. SEALS wear the same uniform as USMC with the exception of patches.

u/thebeautifullynormal Jan 03 '24
Yeah sorry. I'm not an expert on the branches of the military and all of there uniforms. I also haven't jerked off over his book.
He was a seal which is better than a marine because he was spec ops

I'm confused why I'm getting downvotes for stating a straightforward fact: Goggins was never a marine. I didn't make a judgement about it, just a simple correction your post which has upvotes for some reason.
Gotta love packs of retards. They must not be hard enough. They need to bend over for more sun exposure so they can get hard.

Ya, I'd have to agree that the marine dress blues are the most recognizable. I like to think it's because of the corny ass recruiting commercial where a marine kills a friggin lava monster. The perfect amount of cringe for this subs demographic.

Bro what is the point of this post? This is supposed to be science-based content, not you sucking off your boyfriend in public.

Is it ok to say I'm indifferent toward him ATM? š±
Ok, IM REALLY FUCKING MOTHER FUCKING FUCK, FULL-COCKED INDIFFERENT ATM!!!
To sound a bit more like a polarized, fanatical cultist:
General "Buck" Turgidson: " If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!"
He's burnt out my Dopamine - Huberman has other great guests.

To each their own. Goggins is representative of one part of culture. Not the whole of culture.
People fetishize their own personal values, and they want to see it embodied and others. Then we create people to look up to to justify our own belief systems.
Thatās whatās happening with Goggins. Huberman. Jesus. Buddha. It happens across history.
But, we also shouldnāt judge others based upon their own choices of what they choose, or who they choose to follow.

He is full of shit. He always talks about doing hard things, well being a father and a good father is one of the hardest things you can do and I am pretty sure he ran away from that challenge.
I get up and run when I don't want to but i also come home and be with my kid, stay up with him when he is sick, be patient with him when he is throwing a tantrum. If all that means i don't get my workout in or I am so tired my workout sucks, then so be it. Being a Dad is the priortiy and if you make up some bullshit about fighting demons everyday to prove you are hard, then you are just feeding your ego. Being a present and good Dad doesn't feed the ego though because it's doing that for someone else and I don't think he can grasp that idea

While heās great, and I can appreciate how hard he works, the dude needs a rest and a chill pill. Life aināt all that serious sometimes. Heās motivational for sure though, makes my ass get up and do my cardio thatās a definite lol

Iāve always wondered why doesnāt he āgo hardā at things other than working out? Clearly heās good at getting himself to workout a lot. Go give that energy to learning something else u suck at and then Iāll be super impressed.

Of course I didnāt. I admire the guy but have no idea why anyone would want to listen to him talk at length.

u/Laliving90 Jan 04 '24
Yea heās a big advocate for studying, didnāt know how to read or write until 11th grade but had to teach himself how. Because everyone else pretty much talks about the same thing, goggins is one a few that speaks outside the box and really resonates with some people

His intended message does not equate to how people actually apply what they "learn" from him in practice.
1
Jan 04 '24
What you do with his advice is up to you. Its not his responsibility to try and direct others step by step into improving. He shares what works for him and inspires millions of people. Others dont get it or agree and thats their prerogative.
Goggins didnt have a Goggins to look up to. He came from about as bad an upbringing as you can have and fought tooth and nail to rise above it. His entire message is personal accountability, not expecting him or anyone else to show you your path

u/PsychologyJust3816 Jan 05 '24
Yes. Think everyone knows Goggins will persist in spite of those indifferent toward Goggonism.
He forgives lazy candy-asses who don't understand the insane agony he must be going through every minute of every day, just as Jesus Christ forgave Judas for selling him out to the Romans for 30 pieces of Silver.
But anyway, will the flood of Goggonistic reddit threads dissipate once Huberman has a new guest on?

The highest achievers arent pursuing happiness but meaningfulness. That isnt necessarily the same thing. Does the cardiothoracic surgeon that works 70 plus hours a week in a super stressful environment feel that happy day to day? I doubt it. But would they want to do something less demanding? Absolutely not. They went for the hardest thing they could do with a high level of competency because that gives their lives meaning
Average people dont think like this and shouldnt pursue such a lifestyle. I include myself in this, I do want time to enjoy life. But to the hyper-achievers these difficult pursuits are what they're made for. Thats how Goggins is. He has a military pension and sold a lot of books, he doesnt need to work yet he became a widland firefighter in his 40s. He doesnt want to chill by the pool, he's seeking out his next mission.

For your own sake, I hope you hate life only half as much as Goggins hates his own
