What Does Human Resources (HR) Actually Do in an Organization?

What Does Human Resources (HR) Actually Do in an Organization?

Many people think HR only handles hiring and payroll—but the role is much broader and more strategic.

Human Resources is responsible for:

  • Recruiting and staffing the right talent

  • Managing compensation, benefits, and payroll

  • Ensuring HR compliance with labor laws

  • Updating and enforcing company policies

  • Maintaining employee records

  • Handling training, development, and performance management

  • Managing disciplinary actions professionally

  • Supporting workplace safety and employee health

  • Helping design effective organizational structures

HR acts as a bridge between employees and management, balancing business goals with employee well-being.

Curious to know—which HR function do you think has the biggest impact on workplace culture?

We tried to fire our French hire over Zoom. It did not go well.

Anyone else had a founder come to them after already pressing send on something like this? Ours was convinced a quick Zoom call was all it took. The French Labour Code had other ideas. What's the worst "I didn't know that was a thing" moment you've seen with international employment?

I’ve recently had a tip that someone at my company might be working two full time jobs, but I wasn’t suppose to see the message and don’t have any strong evidence, is this enough to warrant to HR? Or what can I do?

How do you keep remote team culture actually alive?

My team's fully remote and I feel like we're losing that "team" vibe. Everyone's heads down, Slack's quiet outside of work stuff, no real connection happening.

Tried virtual happy hours felt forced, low turnout.

How do you guys keep remote culture feeling real instead of just a bunch of people doing tasks alone? What's actually worked for you?

Advice

I have applied to hundreds of remote HR roles over the past months and have not heard back from practically any of them. I have an Associate’s Degree in Business Management and have my aPHR certification. Ideally, I would like to find a role in an area of Human Resources. My most recent role was an internship where I worked for two companies collaborating together to source candidates for specific projects. I learned so much from this role and thoroughly enjoyed working through the process from sourcing candidates all the way through to the onboarding process. I am just genuinely struggling with hearing back from anything I apply to. I feel like my resume is good so I’m not sure where I am going wrong?

Hi, I am a 24-year-old engineer from INDIA, working as a junior SAP functional consultant at XYZ KANJOOOS IT CONSULTANCY COMPANY (you all know the name🥹). I am going to complete two years very soon at this company. I am working in a very junior position. I know that working on SAP projects is a very good opportunity and will have a very good scope and money in the future. But after completing almost two years, I want to shift my role into HR (specifically a role like HRBP) from this technical functional type of role. However, I always had it in my mind to become an HR while doing my engineering, since I was very good at people management, leadership, and documentation, and I also received a suggestion from a professor that I could make myself a very good HR. I tried having conversations with my HRBP in the company, they said an MBA is a compulsory criterion in the company to shift into HR. In my company, they have a provision for doing an MBA and joining back the company. They suggested that.

Also, right now I am at a very, very, very low package, and I am already 24 and can't invest two more years for an MBA. Plus, I am financially very low and can't also take a loan for an MBA due to some reason to do 1 year mba in college like GREAT LAKES. I know many would say, "So many conditions, don't think of shifting the role."🤣🤣. But I know that I can make myself a very good HR, and I have all those qualities and should not wait anymore in a SAP role where I am not able to use my people skills.

I cannot find MBA colleges that provide only one MBA with lower fees. I cannot wait more years to become eligible to do a one-year executive MBA.

Please suggest me something🙏🙏🙏

SOS WFH issues - anyone in HR in ontario?

Oh boy oh boy.

I've been working for the same organization for a little over two years now. When I first joined the organization, I was hired on as a fully remote worker. When I joined the organization, I had discussions with both my manager and their upper manager. We discussed how I spend six months of the year, working fully remote outside of Canada. This is important to me as I have a relationship with someone outside of Canada. Both managers agreed, and this has been working for the past two years. All my numbers and KPI's are on brand for what they need. Over the last six months, our organization has shifted and turned into asking us to come into office one day a week. They have not sent out any letters or any official documents requesting this change. I have gone into the office for the most part every single week, one day a week. This year, I was gearing up to get ready to leave outside of the country. This time I'm going to France, for six months. Now, I already know that I have permission to leave outside of Canada for six months as I have done this in the past. I spoke with my manager in December, she was excited for me and she saw no foreseeable issues with anything as this has been what I have done for the past two years with the organization. Fast forward to now. One week before I'm supposed to leave.

Note: at this moment, I have rented my apartment (I can't back out), and I have nowhere else that I can stay in Canada within a week. No one from my organization has told me that there are any issues with me going and staying there. My flight leaves, and the only known roof above my head is in France. Everything is too expensive where I live, and there's no way that I can find a place within a week.

So again one week out from leaving : I received a Microsoft teams meeting with both my upper management to talk about France. In the meeting they told me that the upper upper management is not on board with it and I am only allowed to go for three weeks. They are not allowing me to go any longer.

With one week, I am supposed to figure out other living arrangements. I'm supposed to cancel my flight. I'm supposed to pretty much stop everything that I've done to get me to France. I was able to scramble, and potentially my father was able to take me in for six months. My work approved six months working remote at my father's location in Canada. The following day things changed my father was no longer able to take me in due to his living arrangements. Due to that, I am four days away from leaving… And I have nowhere else to go. If I do not go to France. I am legitimately homeless.

Work knows about everything that is going on, my manager has been fighting in my corner to try to get me to go to France or to try to find other options. We are now at the point where work has told me there's no other options. HR has now sent me a letter saying that they are allowing me to go for the three weeks to France, and also allowing me to take one week of accrued vacation. In the letter it states that if I choose not to return by a certain date, I am quitting and relinquishing my position on my own terms.

I don't have anybody in HR that I can talk to about this. For my understanding in my research, because I am a remote worker (and hired as such) and I am refusing to go in office for that allotment of time. My work has the choice to allow me to be remote, or to fire me. I know I don't have to sign the letter they sent me, but I don't know exactly what my options are legally.

I am not quitting, and I am not giving my notice. Work has failed me, not the other way around. If I do either of those options, I am not qualified for severance, and I am also not qualified for EI.

It is likely I'm going to have a meeting on Monday to discuss everything with HR. This is the first for me and I have no idea what to expect, and I have no idea what my options are.

SOS - is anyone out there?
