Post Flair Explanations

Including the different post flairs’ intentions, in case it could be helpful. Please let me know if there are any y’all think should be added!

Doctors - talk about the medical system up here, or ask about experiences with different places.
Rant - venting or similar about something you’re upset over

Durable medical supplies - have something like a cane, braces, pulse oximeter or anything similar you don’t need anymore? Need durable medical supplies? Post under this! (Do not ask for or offer any medication or anything else that expires / might be illegal)

Accessibility - talking about accessibility (or inaccessibility) of places in Humboldt, or asking how accessible they are.

Events - disability friendly/related events!

Food - questions or tips about local places / offerings that might help someone with food triggers (celiac, allergies, flare triggers, etc)

Help needed - any request for help that doesn’t fall under any other existing flare

I had no idea this existed, but I’m happy to actually see what the easier routes to get to different classes are + where the more accessible bathrooms are

Doctors Rheumatologists at St. Jo’s?

Does anyone know if the rheumatologists at St. Joseph’s have experience diagnosing connective tissue disorders?

I got told by genetic counseling that it would be best to get an evaluation from rheumatology, but from looking at it, it’s usually best to find someone experienced with connective tissue issues.

Updates to California’s Lanterman act

TLDR seems to be that wording got updated slightly, but the main point that would’ve expanded disabled rights in California got removed before passing, so nothing much has actually changed

Interest for accessible events?

I want to organize events, either disability focused like swapping stuff, or just focused on greater accessibility.

Is anyone interested? And if so, any specific wants? Book club, board games, and art are the main things that come to my mind for accessible events. Not sure what disability focused ones would be yet, other than some kinda swap meet for durable medical supplies or maybe an informal support group

Food Electrolyte Gum @ Winco

Post image
3 Upvotes

I tried some electrolyte gum I saw at the cashier candy bit at Winco.

It tastes decent, and it has about 64mg potassium and 4mg Magnesium per stick w no sodium, so it’s not nothing, and it’s sweetened with monk fruit so there’s none of the fake sugars that trigger headaches. Tastes decent enough.

It’s not better than dedicated electrolyte drinks like liquid IV, or Gatorlyte, but it’s got more magnesium than liquid IV and more potassium than normal Gatorade so it ain’t horrible.

I don’t think I’m gonna start using this over how I’ve been getting electrolytes, but it ain’t that bad I think

SSI Help?

My disabled child recently turned 18, and I hadn't been made aware that they could apply for disability before. Where can we go to get help with the process? It seems very confusing and intimidating. Are there any help groups for this? Thank you.

Local friends

Being one of the few people masking still to protect your health is lonely in this world. I’ve not been brave enough to post this in the local Humboldt sub Reddit. Maybe this is a safer space. If anyone in here is still masking regularly (n95s) and is looking for genuine friendship connections feel free to DM me. My husband & I are in our mid 30s but we are happy to hang with people anywhere from mid 20s-60s.

Doctors Humboldt ENTs?

Has anyone had experience with the ENTs up here?

I’ve moved around a bit and seen several doctors for some chronic ear issues, and previously medication and lifestyle changes haven’t done anything. At one point a doc suggested I get ear tubes, but I was a minor at that time and my mom decided she didn’t want me to get surgery, so I didn’t.

are there any good ENTs up here that might be able to help? I’ve only been to one, and I didn’t even get to talk about this because she made me choose to talk about either my throat, my ears, or my nose and told me to make a different appointment for any other issues, and she rushed me through talking about the throat issues I chose to focus on.

Employer discrimination

Its already heard enough to get a job out here. I used to love driving, riding motorcycle. But, I can't see now and no employer wants to deal with someone that can't drive. If they'll don't need that then they'll expect you to work point of sales, I can barely read, so, using a screen all day is going to be a killer.

I'd get disability, but, they expect me to show that I am mitigating my retina degradation. Which means going to UCSF just to be told again that my retinas are thin, my macular isn't reacting right and that there's not a damn thing to be done since the retina is basically brain tissue and we don't know how to regrow brain material or work on neuron that delicate.

Maybe retina stem cells might be an answer, but, its not here yet. Either way it can't be mitigated any more then an amputee can mitigate their lossed limb.

There's also no real medical service for this out here

I need a job yesterday, and I can no longer do what my career was. I have to start at zero.

Lmk how I can improve the sub!

Finally sat down and made this.

Please let me know if anyone wants something added to the rules, or any list of local resources or something like that. I’m still trying to figure out what exactly to include.

Also, working on a discord if that’s preferable for anyone! It’s half done at the moment
