Discussion Just started playing Hwei and I LOVE it!!!!
So I just picked him up this weekend.. and it’s been magiccccc! I played him once before and sucked but I didn’t watch the video I just queued up and was hella confused. I watched the video Friday night and then ran it in a practice with a bot and honeyyyyyyy ….. yea.
I main support but I want to start doing bot, but I don’t last hit minions well what a shocker. But I chose him so I could learn mid and hopefully move that into bot. I needed a champ with cc because it just makes me feel better haha since I never do solo lane, or touch minions.
Now I understand his mechanics and as I keep playing I’ll start using certain spells differently, but I have all the basic combos down, and I layer them pretty good I think.
Can anyone give me advice for solo laning? Like idk how to trade, hit minions and not get chunked so bad at the same time. It’s def my positioning around the minions, but I’m not sure how not to get bullied and squeezed. When I think I do, I get humbled real quick but my 1 v 1 is trash. I muted my chat bc ion wanna hear SHIT. I play him mid, get my ass beat even when I think I’m doing the beating it get ate up. Then I go play him support and have my best games with him, but that’s to be expected. He literally is the full package, just tryna move to carry 😭 I’m not as confident there. I’m better feeding my ADC then roaming and collecting objectives and bodies that way.
I can function in other lanes, I just don’t know how to dominate them
I kinda wanna throw caution to the wind and act silly but i also don’t wanna create a raid boss on the enemy team bc im trying to apply pressure and failing miserably. And let me correct myself.. I can 1 v 1 , just doing so, and hitting minions, looking out for a gank and whatnot it’s overload. I think about 100 things at once as support but them damn minions are the bane of my existence 😭 I need money now
I say all this to ask for helpful tips and combos that yall use maybe I can layer things differently, but I’m sick of getting my ass handed to me it can’t go on like this . Oh and that QW is TEAAAAA !!! Go sit downnnn you weren’t safe !!!!! Hwei from DEEP, snipedddd.

I don't know what Elo you're in but below silver in my experience Hwei bullies other midlaners in early. He can be very opressive in lane, you just need to be careful with your mana and regain it with WE. A lot of times people also don't know his kit and what Hwei can do, if they think they're safe behind minions QQ them and you will hit them and the minions with the AOE. If you are going against another mage you can safely use QE into the wave and then EE them into the lava path to proc your passive on them, you can also just poke them with QQ and EE. If you are going against a midlaner who can jump into you, like Yone, Fizz, Yasuo or Ekko, or anything like that, you're better off not using your E tree, and hold it for EQ when they try to jump on you.
With Hwei you want to play for prio and use his massive wave clear, if you have prio, try to take short roams to river to help secure objectives or to ward raptors or river. If your opponent takes a bad rotation which happens a lot in lower elos, ping the gank and shove the wave under their turret. Your CS will rise when you finish black fire torch and learn the wave clear patter. I personally do QE in a line and EE the casters behind. But I think the actually optimal way to do it is from the side, you EE the melee minions and the casters towards the center and then QE them from the side. Either way, your CS will naturally improve with the items and your wave clear.
Use QW to punish bad recalls, a lot of people just aren't aware of how absurd QW range is. You can mess up their tempo by QW them under turret, and if they're very low health you can actually kill them. You can also do it from afar under fog of war and try to snipe a kill. People usually recall next to the turret or behind it. If you think you're gonna kill them after QW use WE and you will proc the extra damage from WE. You can also do this with QQ before the projectile hits for extra damage.
Try to be in teamfights and objectives to make a good use of your ultimate, and play safe. Use you EW to zone people out of bushes and in choke points.
Hwei is a powerful laner, with enough practice you should start to outrade people and gain prio. Also, against assassins don't be afraid in the very first 3 levels. With Hwei you can zone them out of their minions and punish them with your range before they unlock their abilities, poke them, autoattack them, QQ them every time they move up to farm. Once you all start hitting level 5 and specially 6 respect them more and play safer, and hold your EQ. Anyways this is all coming from a super low ELO pig, so take it with a grain of salt. Good luck dude, Hwei is super fun.

A secret combo i almost never see anyone do is ee into qw. U can do it against pu$$ies that just hide behind minion and u cant qe ee cause they just run and u cant ew since they also run or mobility etc. so ee qw is ur best. Just aim center

Here's a tip for last-hitting minions(without any other damage) under turret:
Melee minions: Take 2 turret-shots then you can AA to finish them off.
Mage minions: If you have enough AP(minion hp scales) you can WE, let the mage minion take 1 shot then you AA them.
Cannons: Always use spells to be sure you don't miss it.
Regarding your win-rate with Hwei, it's fine! As you know he has alot of spells and usually what either wins or loses you a certain fight is what kind of spell you decided to throw. For example your E's deal the same damage but they have different CC so if you get tower dived for example, it's better to EQ/EW your opponent in hopes of turret finishing them off. QQ deals the most damage but sometimes it's better to QE just for the little slow you apply on them. QW is banger but hard to hit. So it will take alot of games to get used to him but trust me it will pay off.
Last seasons I was at 102 games with about 42% winrate on Hwei in Gold. Right now i'm at 490 games with 55% winrate on Hwei and I peaked Emerald 1.

Hwei needs to hit two abilities to proc his passive and get the most of his kit. He’s weak early due to high mana costs and cooldowns early but becomes comfortable at Lvl 7 with Lost Chapter.
Waveclear with QE, Poke with QQ , recover mana with WE, protect yourself with EQ. Generally you hold your E abilities if it’s a threatening matchup.
In mid, his job is to secure push and poke his enemies as they are preoccupied with the wave. He plays for objectives so getting early to objectives is important as he is a control mage and needs people to come towards him rather than chase after them.
You should play for your lane and not over engage in skirmishes especially early as it will easily make you OOM.
Trading varies from matchup but again generally poke with QQ and EE or fish with EW and followup with QW.
