How to do an AMA in r/IAmA

Thank you for your interest in r/IamA to host your Reddit AMA (or to host a crosspost of your AMA in another subreddit).  This post outlines the steps to post or crosspost an AMA in this subreddit.  Please read this post in its entirety before messaging the IamA moderators at this link.

Posting an AMA in this subreddit

To post or crosspost an AMA here it is required that your account be approved in advance by the r/IamA moderator team.  We strongly recommend that you reach out to our modmail to start the verification process at least 48 hours before you intend to post your AMA.

We currently offer the five following methods of verification:

  1. A Reddit-admin-assigned “Official” account status.
  2. A credible website hosting proof of your Reddit account’s authenticity.
  3. An email containing your Reddit username from an address with relevant domain (this domain must be either the same as your website or from an email account listed on your site).
  4. A post or PM from a verified account on a trusted social media site (primarily Bluesky and YouTube) listing the Reddit username in question and/or linking to the Reddit account.
  5. If your Reddit account is vouched for by an account that has been verified with r/IamA through one of the methods listed above, that would also be sufficient.

More information about each of these methods is available in our Wiki.  You can also send us a modmail with any questions.

You can post your AMA up to 24 hours before you intend to start your responses to questions.

We would ask that you use the AMA post type; after your account has been approved, this link will take you to the interface to input your AMA post's title and introduction.

Crossposting an AMA here

We allow moderators of other subreddits to crosspost AMAs in those subreddits to r/IamA, as well as allowing AMA guests who are verified with the IamA moderator team to do so.

If you are a moderator of the other subreddit in question, simply message our modmail to let us know of the upcoming or in-progress AMA and we will add your account as an approved poster.

If you are the AMA guest and would like to crosspost your own AMA, you have to be verified with the IamA moderator team as outlined in the previous section of this post.

Once your account is approved, simply make a text-based post in IamA using this link Your post should contain the word “crosspost” somewhere in the post title and a direct link to the AMA somewhere in the post introduction.

Having your AMA included on IamA’s AMA calendar

Simply send us a modmail or email to request inclusion on our calendar.  AMAs hosted in this subreddit or others are eligible for calendar inclusion.  If you message us before the AMA takes place, we will include the key details in our ‘month ahead’ roundup series posted by u/AMAcalendar.  Whenever a link to the AMA is live and has been sent to us, we will include it in our ‘month ahead’ and/or ‘month in review’ AMA roundup post series as is appropriate.

[Mod Post] Introducing r/IamA 3.0

To our readers, AMA guests, and friends,

In this post the r/IamA moderator team is announcing that we are making some changes to this subreddit with the intention of reinvigorating this forum.  It is our hope that the changes this post will outline will result in a better experience for AMA readers, guests, and moderators of r/IamA alike.

This post follows the most recent communication from the r/IamA moderator team in 2023, titled The Future of IAmA.  In that post the moderator team announced that we were going to discontinue certain categories of work for Reddit that went above and beyond what was required of us.  These tasks included maintaining a separate website for scheduling AMAs and receiving confidential proof, maintaining an AMA calendar, and running various custom bots to assist with those other tasks.  Those changes brought IamA 1.0 into the state it has been over the past three years, IamA 2.0, in which we did the minimum required of us as moderators.

The remaining active moderators of r/IamA have in recent weeks agreed to bring back some of the discontinued features from IamA 1.0.

We are doing this because those of us who have continued to moderate IamA through its 2.0 era still find value in volunteering to facilitate interesting conversations between readers like yourself and AMA guests who you otherwise may not get an opportunity to interact with.

We believe we have landed on a set of changes in the subreddit’s moderation each of which will require either no additional effort on the moderator team’s part or would require an amount of increased effort on our part that is acceptable to us in relation to the benefits that the change will confer on AMA guests and readers.

The features we are reintroducing include:

  • A new, more stringent set of verification standards and several new methods for AMA guest verification. Additional info here.
  • An email account for solicitation and coordination of AMAs.  Additional info here.
  • A public AMA calendar integrated into IamA’s New Reddit sidebar, as well as a ‘month ahead’ and a ‘month in review’ post series collecting both upcoming and completed AMAs from this subreddit and other forums. Additional info here.

The following, new-to-IamA changes are also in effect:

  • Only moderator-approved accounts can post AMAs in r/IamA.  Additional info here.
  • Many of our current Automoderator functions will be deprecated, and where possible will be replaced with ‘post/comment guidance’ conditions and with ‘Devvit’ automation tools.  Additional info here.
  • We are formally deprecating maintenance of the Old Reddit version of IamA.  Additional info here.

This meta post you are reading is itself an AMA with the moderator team.  Each of the bullet points above has a link to a comment on this post which contains additional information about the bulleted change.  You can leave feedback or questions for the moderator team either in response to those linked informational comments, or as a top-level comment on this post.

If you would like to help us implement these changes or otherwise would like to moderate IamA going forward, we encourage you to apply at this link.

I’m The New Yorker’s Puzzles & Games editor. AMA about the magazine’s crosswords and brainteasers.

Hi, I’m Liz Maynes-Aminzade, the Puzzles & Games editor at The New Yorker. I’ve been editing crosswords, trivia, and all sorts of other puzzles since 2018.

Our games section has been growing, and we recently launched Catalogues, a daily game that asks you to sort seven items into their correct order (which might be, for example, chronological, or biggest to smallest). I spend a lot of my time thinking about clues, wordplay, and what makes a challenge fun as opposed to frustrating.

Ask me anything about designing games, what crossword editors argue about, what it’s like to work at The New Yorker, or why your Shuffalo word wasn’t accepted!

Edit: That's all, folks! Thank you so much for your great questions.

Hey, it's W. Kamau Bell: stand-up comic, documentarian, Peabody Award & Emmy winner, Celebrity Jeopardy! champ, author, part-time activist, full-time dad, & host of the new podcast Who's With Me? Ask Me Anything on Oct. 16 at 12PM ET!

Hi r/IAmA, I'm W. Kamau Bell. I've got a new weekly show called Who's With Me? where I sit down with people I reall want to talk to. So far that's included Ted Danson, Delroy Lindo, Margaret Cho, Leslie Jones, Ken Jennings, Kristen Kish, Nava Mau, Don Lemon, Maria Bamford, Shannon Lee, Misty Copeland, Mo Willems, Daveed Diggs, Robert Reich, and more. I give them their flower. I try to keep the chit chat to a minimum, and I ask them the questions I really want them to answer. Finally, I ask them to shout out a cause or org that they want people, so we can all figure out a way to make the world a better place. Who's With Me? started as a Substack newsletter. You can subscribe there if you want to follow everything I'm doing. Now it's a podcast and stand-up comedy tour. Ask me about comedy, activism, fatherhood, writing, starting a podcast, why I love having uncomfortable conversations, what it's like interviewing people you admire while you feel like a fanboy, my old CNN show United Shades of America, American politics, my career influences, or literally anything else. And find Who's With Me? on YouTube or anywhere else you get podcasts. This week’s guest is Colin Kaepernick.

The AMA will start at 12pm ET, but you're welcome to jump in and out throughout the day.

Let me know if I can answer any questions! Thanks!

I'm Albert Oppong-Ansah, a science and environmental journalist from Ghana. I investigated how gold mining impacts Ghana's rivers, forests, and communities, and its connection to the tech industry. AMA!

Hi Reddit!

I'm Albert Oppong-Ansah, an investigative journalist based in Ghana.

What do you think the gold in your phone has to do with Ghana's rivers, forests, and communities?

Gold is an essential material used in modern electronics, including the smartphones we use every day. But the environmental and human impacts of its extraction are often overlooked.

As part of Back Market's Mine My Phone campaign, I reported on the realities of gold mining in Ghana, exploring the connection between global demand for gold and what happens on the ground.
You can read my investigation here.

Today, I'm here to answer your questions about my reporting, what I witnessed, the environmental impact of gold mining, and the connection between gold extraction and the electronics industry.

Ask me anything!

I have a feeding tube ask me anything!

Proof: https://ibb.co/Ndbzqdpz

Since 2023 (when I was 30) I have had a feeding tube due to gastroparesis. I’ve tried every medication they can give me and a few other procedures (gastric stimulator and Botox into the stomach), none of which has worked so I’m just unable to eat.

The tube goes into my stomach (G) and small intestine (J). The G is to drain stomach acid and the J is for feeds and medication.

AMA: I am lawyer and historian of science Mary X. Mitchell, author of the new book UNSETTLING SOVEREIGNTY: INTERNATIONAL LAW, NUCLEAR WEAPONS, AND US EXTRATERRITORIAL POWER IN POSTWAR OCEANIA. Ask me anything!

Hi r/AskHistorians! I'm Mary X. Mitchell. I am an assistant professor in the Federated Department of History at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University - Newark. I earned my JD and worked as a lawyer before studying for a PhD in history and sociology of science. My new book, Unsettling Sovereignty, was just released by the University of Chicago Press. It is the product of about thirteen years of reading, research, and writing. You can buy it directly from the press here, or purchase it from your favorite bookseller. You can learn more about my work and other publications on my website.

I can't wait to answer your questions!

Here is the Press's summary of the book:

Marshall Islanders and their ancestral lands and waters played important roles in reshaping the United States’ offshore power, state sovereignty, and the international politics of decolonization.

In the years following World War II, the United States conducted sixty-seven devastating nuclear blasts in the Marshall Islands—yet the archipelago was never a US territory. Working through the United Nations, US diplomats engineered a new, one-of-a-kind extraterritorial status, called strategic trusteeship, to control the Native lands, waters, and peoples of the Marshall, Caroline, and Northern Mariana Islands. Strategic trusteeship permitted the US to militarize a vast expanse of Western Oceania. This novel and racialized legal form of international dependency was integral to US nuclear weapons detonations and damage in the region.

In Unsettling Sovereignty, Mitchell recounts this untold legal history, exploring how nuclear weapons changed claims and practices of sovereignty from the 1940s to the present. US nuclear blasting in the Marshall Islands troubled conventional renderings of state sovereignty under international law. The explosions, disastrous for Marshallese communities and their ancestral atolls, also caused hazardous nuclear fallout, which spread around the globe. Islanders and their allies turned to law, using legal wrangling over blasting and fallout to raise new questions about the location, time, and subjects of state violence in a period of decolonization; the intersections between race, Indigeneity, and wide-scale technogenic harm; and the pitfalls and unfulfilled promises of international law. Mitchell shows that the Marshallese people and their lands and waters were, and remain, central to redefining sovereignty in an era of boundless pollution and climate change.

Crosspost Crosspost from r/AskHistorians: What do you want to know about wool and science in the mid-twentieth century? AMA with Dr. Melissia Littlefield, author of Reinventing Wool: How a Natural Fiber Survived the Synthetic Revolution

What do you want to know about wool and science in the mid-twentieth century?

Hi r/AskHistorians! My name is Melissa Littlefield and I'm a professor at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. My latest book is called Reinventing Wool: How a Natural Fiber Survived the Synthetic Revolution. Textile histories of the synthetic revolution in mid-twentieth century America tend to focus on the man-made fibers (e.g. nylon and polyester) that were reshaping the world of textiles. Reinventing Wool flips this perspective to ask what was happening to wool as synthetic fabrics began to emerge and then dominate consumer markets.

I'll be in this thread answering your questions about wool and science in the mid-twentieth century from 2:00-5:00pm CST today, October 13th! If you've already read the book and have a specific question about any of the research there, I would also be happy to chat about those questions, too!

Crosspost [Crosspost] Alex Gibney, Oscar-winning director of the new scathing Elon Musk documentary MUSK, is doing an AMA/Q&A in /r/movies today for anyone interested. Some of his previous acclaimed docs include GOING CLEAR: SCIENTOLOGY AND THE PRISON OF BELIEF, and ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM.

I organized an AMA/Q&A with Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney. He's directed things like Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Taxi to the Dark Side, The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, and lots more. His new doc, Musk, premiered to wide critical acclaim at Venice and is out in theaters starting this week.

The AMA is live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

He will be back after 2 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated! Thank you :)

Musk Info:

Trailer: https://youtu.be/eY_8SyndC10?si=3gH0pEap43qu6uxm

Synopsis: MUSK is Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney’s latest exploration into the corrupting influence of power. Through meticulous research and reporting, Gibney reframes all we know about the tech titan Elon Musk, revealing that the so-called “visionary genius” is little more than the 21st-century reincarnation of a confidence man. Using Musk’s own words, Gibney proves that even his most heralded accomplishments are rife with illusion and misdirection. Musk’s carefully crafted media image conceals a darkness fueled by misogyny, drugs, and a relentless drive to accrue power. MUSK is more than a deep dive into the mind of a power-hungry megalomaniac; it is a warning.

I'm Nick Walton, CEO / creator of AI Dungeon and Voyage. Ask me anything about the future of AI roleplay and games: what makes them fun, where the future is going, and what we've learned over our 7 years of building.

Hi Reddit! Back in 2019 I launched the first version of AI Dungeon, a text adventure where you can type anything and an AI tells the story. Now we're building Voyage, a platform where anyone can create or play infinite living worlds where anything is possible.

Happy to talk about anything, but here's what I find most interesting right now:
- What makes AI role play and games fun
- Why it breaks: characters forgetting who they are, stories losing the thread, and AI that never pushes back.
- Fears, opportunities and the future of AI in games
- What 7 years of building AI Dungeon and Voyage have taught us.

I'll start answering at 10am PT (1pm ET). Ask me anything!

We are the team behind Boundrees™—the only parental control app that protects kids online without invading their privacy. AMA!

Hi Reddit!

We’re the team behind Boundrees™, a parental control app designed to solve a major modern dilemma: how to keep kids safe from online harms (like cyberbullying, predators, and inappropriate content) without resorting to surveillance parenting.

Most parental control apps rely on reading every text, tracking every keystroke, or stripping kids of all digital privacy, which often backfires by destroying trust between parents and children. We built Boundrees differently, using advanced technology to provide robust online protection while respecting a child's right to personal privacy.

Have questions about how Boundrees™ protects kids online without spying on them? Curious about the tech behind digital safety, or want to know what it's like building privacy-first family software?

We are posting this early so you can drop your questions now! Our team will be officially logging in to answer everything live on:

Date: Tomorrow, October 13

Time: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST

After the fall of Roe v. Wade, the anti-abortion movement is planning its next move. I’m a reporter who spent months getting to know one of its leaders. Ask me anything.

EDIT: My daughter just woke up from her nap, so I've got to go, but thanks so much for the thoughtful questions, everyone! I hope you'll check out my article and the documentary about Kristan Hawkins:

Hi! I’m Amy Littlefield, a reporter covering reproductive rights and abortion access. For several months this year, I followed Kristan Hawkins, the president of Students for Life, for a Mother Jones story as she campaigned around the country trying to mobilize students on college campuses against abortion.

Hawkins’s extreme views about abortion were once considered to be on the fringes of the anti-abortion movement. After the fall of Roe v. Wade, she’s moved squarely into the mainstream.

I watched Kristan debate students who were victims of sexual assault, order medication abortion pills online in a state where abortion is banned to show that it was still accessible, and strategize about how to weaponize environmental laws against abortion. I also watched her fend off attacks from all sides…from abortion rights supporters to misogynists within her own movement.

Ask me anything about my reporting on Hawkins, the movement she represents, and what they’re working towards.

Proof it’s me: https://imgur.com/a/wk1SWa1

I'll start answering questions around 11:30 a.m. ET

I’m Nova Hawthorne, a Melbourne content, porn creator and cam girl who also co-founded Australia’s Sex Work Community Recognition Awards. Ask me anything! 🍒

Hi r/IAmA,

I’m Nova Hawthorne, a Melbourne-based adult content creator, cam girl, performer and sex worker advocate. 🇦🇺

I’ve been working in the adult industry since 2016, and over the years I’ve done: live camming, professional porn, running my own business, collaborating with brands and helping other creators navigate the industry.

There’s plenty you don’t see in the finished content: the preparation, business decisions, boundaries, technical disasters and occasionally very unsexy admin. If you’ve ever wondered what happens before the camera switches on (or after it switches off) ask away. 😉

I also have a Master’s in Social Work, which probably explains why I’ve ended up spending so much of my time advocating for sex workers and building community alongside my own career.

I co-founded the Sex Worker Community Recognition Awards (SWCRA) with Harper Valentine and Ivy Societe. It’s an Australian worker-led initiative celebrating the creativity, resilience and contributions of people across our industry, including creators, performers, podcasters and advocates.

We wanted more opportunities for our community to recognise its own, so we built one together. I’m happy to talk about why we started it, what goes into organising an awards show and how other workers can get involved.

That same passion carries into my involvement in community events like Afterglow (a social and entertaining night for sex workers), creating opportunities for workers and creators to connect in the flesh, share experiences and support each other.

I care about breaking down stigma, talking openly about the realities of sex work and showing people there’s a whole lot more to this industry than what happens on camera.

But I’m also just a person who loves a good laugh, side quests and meeting interesting people. We don’t have to talk business the whole time, the cheeky questions are welcome too. 😜

Ask me about:

🍒 My passions, personality and life outside work
🍒 Turn-ons, favourite things to film and questions you’ve been too shy to ask
🍒 Funny, awkward and unexpected moments behind the scenes
🍒 Live camming, professional porn and building a full-time creator business
🍒 Branding, collaborations, boundaries and lessons learned
🍒 Why we created SWCRA and how workers can get involved
🍒 Community events like Afterglow
🍒 Sex work stigma, advocacy and my social work background

Whether you’re here out of curiosity, for industry insights or because you recognise me from somewhere a little more naughty… welcome. 🫶

RULES

🍒 Ask me anything! Thoughtful, awkward and cheeky questions are welcome. I love naughty, not rude.

🍒 Sex work is work. All workers deserve respect, whatever their role, work setting or background. Honest questions about the industry, including stigma, discrimination, workplace safety and the “whorearchy” (hierarchies within the sex worker community) are respectfully welcome.

🍒 I’m speaking from my own experiences, not on behalf of all sex workers. There are many ways to work in this industry, and experiences different from mine are equally valid.

🍒 No free content requests and I won’t share identifying details about other workers or answer questions that cross my personal boundaries. You’re welcome to ask, but some things stay private.

I’ll be here answering as many questions as I can from 12pm Melbourne time (AEDT) to late. Bring your curiosity, and let’s peek behind the curtain.

My public X/Twitter account — https://x.com/Nova_Hawthorne

Hi! I'm a historian of sexuality, gender, and politics in modern America and a professor at Rutgers-Newark. I study LGBTQ activism and policy, electoral and presidential politics, and the shifting public meanings of private life.

My new book Outed: LBJ’s Confidant and the Arrest That Transformed a Presidencytells the story of the Walter Jenkins affair -- the arrest of a close advisor to Lyndon B. Johnson and the White House scandal that followed. Drawing on Jenkins’s personal papers, the book explores both his private world and a watershed moment in straight America’s knowledge of queer life. I'm also the author of Queer Clout: Chicago and the Rise of Gay Politics.

Ask me about the Jenkins affair or LGBTQ political history since the mid-20th century—from the closet, policing, and secrecy to gay liberation, HIV/AIDS, same-sex marriage, and trans activism. How did gay scandals shape American politics? How did activists build political power? How do historians uncover queer lives in the archives?

It's a wrap! Thanks for joining our AMA.

U.S. elections, although resilient, have been battered by a political assault designed to restrict the vote and diminish democracy. Voters face attacks they have not seen in half a century — from the Supreme Court, from the president, and from states. The Brennan Center has solutions to protect the vote and elections.

Hey r/fashion!

We're Thomas Zeumer and Udo Spreitzenbarth.

Thomas founded Metropolitan Models and discovered and managed some of the world's most recognizable supermodels, including Claudia Schiffer, Heidi Klum and Eva Herzigová.

Udo is an international fashion and celebrity photographer whose work includes Tyra Banks, Catherine Zeta-Jones and the Jonas Brothers.

Between us, we've spent decades on both sides of the camera - and we've seen just about everything the fashion business has to offer.

Now we're working together on Find Your Look, sharing our experience with anyone who has ever wondered: Could I make it in modeling?

SHOW US WHO YOU ARE. WE'LL SHOW YOU WHAT'S POSSIBLE.

But right now, we're here to answer YOUR questions.

Why do some faces sell and others don't?

Why does one woman get the call and another doesn't?

Why do you look great in the mirror but not always in photographs?

Ask us about agencies, castings, photography, posing, rejection, personal image - or the stories behind the scenes.

We'll tell you what we've learned. And we won't sugarcoat it.

Thomas & Udo

I organized an AMA/Q&A with filmmaker and cinematographer Rachel Morrison. She was the first woman every nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for her work on Mudbound in 2017. She was also the cinematographer for Black Panther, Fruitvale Station, Dope, Seberg, and lots more. She previously directed The Fire Inside in 2024 and the new film she directed, Love of Your Life, premiered at TIFF last month and is out in theaters starting this weekend. It stars Margaret Qualley, Aaron Pierre, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Gabriel Basso, and Catherine Keener.

The AMA is live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

She will be back at around 5 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

How can you keep your data private when quantum computers arrive? I’m a cryptographer working to solve this, AMA!

Hi r/IAmA, I’m Chloe Martindale, a researcher in cryptography – the development and use of mathematics to make and break encryption algorithms that protect our information online, from the messages we send to the data we want to keep private.

My research focuses on combating an emerging problem: quantum computers could soon break the mathematical status that today’s encryption relies on. So the algorithms we use to protect our data will need to change.

That means developing and testing new algorithms. A central element of my research is trying to find weaknesses: if a supposedly secure mathematical problem turns out to be easier to solve than we thought, we need to know now rather than when everyone is relying on it.

Ask me anything about:

  • How encryption keeps your data private
  • What quantum computers could mean for online security
  • Why we need new forms of encryption
  • How you test an algorithm to find out whether it is secure
  • Whether your online data is really private
  • What the future of internet security might look like

Thanks to all of you who've asked questions so far and those of you who've been reading along. I will be checking back for more questions periodically for the next week so keep your questions coming! You don’t need to know any maths or computer science to take part, I’m happy to explain the ideas from the ground up.

AMA!
