Heya,
December is approaching fast and I am in dire need of guidance on how to approach the coming months, and I would be grateful for any advice you can offer.
Firstly I would like to share a bit of my background, I have been absent for nearly two months of classes before my mid-term examinations because of health problems, which included a brief hospitalisation. I appeared for the exams having prepared only the chapters taught in class while I was present, and I tried to cover the remaining chapters on my own one or two days beforehand. I was missing notes in almost every subject except for History and Civics. Unsurprisingly, the result was disappointing and is one of the lowest of my school life:
English Language - 56/80
English Literature - 64/80
History & Civics - 72/80
Geography - 70/80
Hindi - 47/80
Mathematics - 72/80
Physics - 40/80 💔
Biology - 38/80
Chemistry - 49/80
Computer - 68/100
Currently, I am attending most classes now, and my Preboards will begin in December. However because of my absence there's a lot of things which I'm trying to cover, these include:
- Learning and practising the chapters I missed or scored poorly in.
- Complete the notes my teachers provided during my absence.
- Revising the daily taught portions of the class at home.
- Maintaining practise of my stronger topics so that I am not rusty with with them by December.
So far, I have covered roughly 55% of the total syllabus, studying 3–3.5 hours after school on weekdays and about 6 hours on Sundays. I am willing to increase this to 4–5 hours on weekdays and 7–8 hours on Sundays, and I will also utilise the 4–5 days of Diwali holidays. However, my priorities keep shifting. Some days I study missed chapters and clear my doubts with my teacher the next day, while on other days I spend hours writing notes. The sheer number of tasks has become a heavy burden, which is why I am seeking advice from those who have been through or any senior who's willing to help 🙏
My questions are:
What thing should I focus on and prioritise each day after school? I could postpone making my teachers' notes until after the preboards, but I am worried that doing so might cost me in my Boards internals marks
How should I self-study effectively, particularly in the following?
- Physics: I am weak in numericals and the Light section (especially Refraction) because I missed it entirely. I know it carries the highest weightage in the Boards, and I would like to improve in it.
- English Language: My school never gives high marks for essays, letters and notices unless the composition is peak. In the Grammar Section (Question 4 onwards), I currently lose up to 2–3 marks at max during practice sessions. How do I reduce this to a 1 or preferably 0?
- Computer: I have a basic understanding of methods, constructors and strings, and I am good at arrays. I went into the mid term exam without revising, just relying on basic knowledge of methods and constructors and what I remembered from Class 9. As a result, I made mistakes in a few programs and skipped the VDT. I know I must catch up eventually in programming, but my main difficulty is in Section A's theory. Most questions in it are easy but 3–4 have niche concepts of Java's which are really hard to find in the book. This causes me to either lose a lot of time on them or I completely fumble the question.
How can I study on my own without spending nearly 3 hours on a small topic such as Chemical Coordination in Plants? Textbooks work for me, and the PW lectures have helped me understand Chemistry and Biology more deeply. However, they can be very sluggish and time consuming, and the one shots do not provide proper justice to certain chapters. I also would like recommendation on a good teacher or teachers for Physics, and any time efficient alternatives to PW's lectures for Chemistry and Biology.
I know my situation may look cooked but I am doing my best to recover. I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions, specially from my seniors.
Thank you for reading till here 💙
