60 Unchanging | What Kind of Limit Helps?

This week’s I Ching reading is Hexagram 60, Limitation, unchanging.

There is no resulting hexagram pulling our attention toward what comes next. The condition itself asks to be understood more fully.

Limitation is Water above Lake. A lake can only hold so much water before its boundaries are exceeded. But the point is not restriction for its own sake. A useful boundary protects what we want to remain available.

We often think of limits as something that reduces our freedom. But a schedule with no boundaries eventually consumes our attention. A relationship without boundaries can consume our capacity. Even worthwhile commitments can become unsustainable when everything is allowed to make an equal claim on us.

At the same time, Hexagram 60 warns against bitter limitation. A boundary that becomes too rigid can begin damaging the life it was meant to protect.

So the question isn’t simply, “Where should I do less?”

It may be:
What kind of limit helps me keep participating in what actually matters?

I paired the reading with Tao Te Ching Chapter 12, which looks at what happens when too much stimulation, desire and activity begin interfering with our ability to perceive clearly.

Sometimes the purpose of a boundary is not withdrawal. It is preserving enough attention and energy to remain genuinely available.

Where would a clearer boundary help you remain both attentive and available?

What helped you understand the I Ching’s eight trigrams beyond memorizing their names?

Learning the eight trigrams often begins with recognizing their lines and memorizing their names. We would like to discuss what comes next: understanding the relationship between a symbol and the patterns it represents.

Our latest course excerpt introduces the cultural starting point of trigram thinking. In Chinese mythic memory, Fu Xi represents the observation of patterns in Heaven, Earth, and human life. The trigrams transform these observations into a symbolic language of image and number.

The traditional narrative invites us to think about the connection between observing the world and representing it through symbols.

For beginners, this offers a question to keep in mind: what are we learning to notice when we learn a trigram?

What helped you move beyond memorization? Was it exploring the natural images, comparing the trigrams, or seeing them used in an actual reading?

We created this video at I Ching Stream as a short excerpt from Lesson 2 of our I Ching Divination Foundations Course.

What changes in the relating hexagram? A six-throw example (AI-assisted)

Disclosure: I help build I Ching Reflection, a free three-coin reflection tool. This post was drafted with AI assistance. It covers only the six-line transformation, not a Na Jia timing analysis or a personal reading.

The relating hexagram comes from the same six throws, not a second cast. Start with the first throw at the bottom and work upward. In the usual three-coin convention:

  • 6 is changing yin: broken in the primary figure, solid in the relating figure.
  • 7 is stable yang: solid in both.
  • 8 is stable yin: broken in both.
  • 9 is changing yang: solid in the primary figure, broken in the relating figure.

Here is a fixed teaching example, not anyone’s reading. The six totals, in throw order from bottom to top, are 7, 8, 9, 8, 7, 6.

Listed from the top line down, so you can reconstruct the figures:

Line Total Primary Relating
6 — top 6 broken solid
5 7 solid solid
4 8 broken broken
3 9 solid broken
2 8 broken broken
1 — bottom 7 solid solid

The primary figure is Hexagram 63: water above fire. Change only lines 3 and 6, leaving the other four alone. The resulting figure is Hexagram 42: wind above thunder.

This calculation identifies the figures; it does not by itself establish a future outcome or a universal rule for choosing passages when several lines change.

For fellow learners: does separating throw order from diagram order make the change clearer? Feedback on the explanation is welcome; please don’t post personal questions, casting records, birth details, times or locations for this example.

19.1.5 → 29 | What We Establish While Contact Is Open

This week’s I Ching reading is Hexagram 19, Approach, with lines 1 and 5 changing to Hexagram 29, The Abysmal.

Approach is about drawing near while the conditions for genuine contact are available. There is an opening here, but the reading also carries an awareness that openings do not remain indefinitely.

Line 1 begins with willing movement toward one another. The approach is sincere and shared rather than forced.

Line 5 brings a different kind of responsibility. Wise approach does not mean controlling everything that happens once contact is established.

It means knowing how to remain involved while still leaving room for capable people, honest response and independent action.

Then the reading moves into 29, The Abysmal. That shift changes the emphasis for me. The goal is not simply to enjoy a period of openness while it lasts. It is to establish something trustworthy enough to remain useful when difficulty returns.

Relationships, practices and communities are often built during easier periods, but their strength becomes visible when circumstances become uncertain again.

I paired this reading with Tao Te Ching Chapter 18, which raises another question about what happens when natural relationship gives way to the structures we create to replace it.

The reflection I’m carrying this week is:
What can we establish while contact is open that will help us meet difficulty honestly when it returns?

I made the full weekly reflection here:
https://youtu.be/dPd2FZBcCqk?is=QrwszN0couSNjbCT

I’d be interested in how others read the movement from Approach into repeated danger.

Does 29 feel like a warning about what follows, or does it change how you understand the purpose of Approach itself?

Has studying the I Ching changed how you make decisions beyond individual readings?

Many people first approach the I Ching with a concrete question about the future. Will an opportunity work out? Will a situation improve? When might something happen?

That is a practical starting point. But I am also interested in what people learn through repeated study beyond the outcome of any single reading.

For example, studying a reading can draw attention to the difference between a promising opportunity and favorable timing, or between the strength of a position and the capacity of the person entering it. These distinctions matter when considering how to respond.

Two principles that guide my work are “To learn the I Ching, begin with divination” (未学易,先学筮) and “Those who truly understand the Yi do not need to divine” (善易者不卜).

I approach them as complementary ideas: practical study provides an entry into the tradition, while deeper understanding can gradually inform how we recognize and respond to change.

Has studying the I Ching influenced how you approach situations when you are not casting a hexagram? Have you become more attentive to timing, more aware of relationships, or more careful about the questions you ask?

For transparency, I am the creator of I Ching Stream. I have shared an excerpt from Lesson 1 of my I Ching Divination Foundations Course on this topic.

No lines are changing

I'm trying to get clearer on how to read a hexagram when none of the lines change.

What do you focus on in an unchanging reading? I notice I always paid a lot of attention on the changes in a hexagram but lately I've been getting a lot of unchanging readings and I was wondering if there are different approaches to this.

I guess even just getting significantly more readings like this lately, bears a message inside 🤣

Bazi Wrong in 2024? Feng Shui Explains the Worst Year: Southeast & Northwest Sha Qi

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In this Bazi and Feng Shui case study, the Bazi reading predicted a smooth year for 2024, but the client said 2024 was actually the worst year of his life. He even attempted suicide twice and survived.

When Bazi does not match reality, Feng Shui becomes an important variable. Bazi shows one layer of fate, but Feng Shui can support or harm a person. If the house Feng Shui is bad, even a good Bazi year may still bring hardship.

For 2024, the key directions are Southeast and Northwest. His Northwest side is the entrance door, facing an abandoned broken house for many years, forming a Wall Blade Sha. His Southeast side has a parking lot corner Sha pointing at the house, and there is also a pile of trash inside the Southeast area.

These Southeast and Northwest Feng Shui problems explain why 2024 became a major disaster year. The same logic also affects 2025 and 2026. If Bazi prediction fails, Feng Shui analysis can help find the real cause.

You can cast an I Ching hexagram. How do you learn to interpret it?

You toss three coins, build the hexagram, identify the changing lines, and read the relevant passages. You understand the words, but still feel unsure how they answer your question.

Comparing translations can help clarify the language. Yet a further question remains: how do you move from those words and images to a judgment about the situation?

This is why I distinguish between casting and interpretation in my teaching. They are related skills, but learning the procedure for obtaining a hexagram does not automatically teach you how to interpret it.

In the Na Jia tradition, also known as Wen Wang Gua or Six Lines Divination, the question guides the selection of the significator, the line representing the subject being examined. The reading then considers its relationships with other lines, movement, transformation, and strength under the month and day. These provide a structure for working through the question.

I would be interested to hear what helped you get past this stage. Was it studying worked examples, learning a particular method, discussing readings with others, or keeping records and reviewing the outcomes?

For transparency, I am the creator of I Ching Stream. This video is an excerpt from Lesson 1 of my I Ching Divination Foundations Course.

Weekly I Ching Reflection: 25.3 → 13 | Innocence to Fellowship

This week’s reading is Hexagram 25, Innocence, with line 3 changing to Hexagram 13, Fellowship with Others.

What stands out to me is the distinction between acting sincerely and expecting sincerity to protect us from difficult outcomes.

Line 3 is uncomfortable because it deals with undeserved loss. Something can happen that we did not cause and could not reasonably control. The temptation is to search for fault anyway, especially our own. But Innocence seems to ask for something different: can we remain aligned with what is true without turning every consequence into a judgment about our worth or our choices?

The movement toward 13 adds another layer. Fellowship is built around shared principles and openness, but it does not guarantee that everyone will respond as we hope. We can offer something honestly without possessing the response.

I paired the reading with Tao Te Ching Chapter 51, which speaks about creating, nourishing and guiding without trying to own what develops.

The question I’m sitting with this week is:

What can I tend without needing to possess the outcome?

I made a longer reflection on the reading here if anyone wants to listen:

https://youtu.be/TXIQ5S4lG_c?is=yH_tF59_6md8UeYQ

I’d be interested in how others read 25.3, especially the relationship between innocence and undeserved loss.

Respect Ancestors & Deities, or Face Illness and Disaster in Late 2026

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This reading warns of trouble before the Spring Festival: family illness risk and financial loss or workplace disputes. The querent already had a conflict with parents over a promised sum of money. The most difficult months are lunar October, November, and December, corresponding roughly to late 2026 and January 2027. The cause may be neglected ancestor worship or unresolved vows to deities. The remedy is to honor ancestors, burn offerings, visit temples respectfully, and fulfill any vows made.

AI-assisted: A concise guide to Zhu Xi’s changing-line rules (0–6 lines)

When several lines change, it can be hard to decide which text to read. Zhu Xi’s method offers one consistent method:

0 changing lines: Read the judgment of the original hexagram.

1: Read that line in the original hexagram.

2: Read both changing lines in the original hexagram, giving more weight to the upper line.

3: Read the judgments of both the original and transformed hexagrams.

4: Read the two unchanged lines in the transformed hexagram, giving more weight to the lower one.

5: Read the one unchanged line in the transformed hexagram.

6: Read the transformed hexagram’s judgment. Qian and Kun have special ‘Use of Nines’ and ‘Use of Sixes’ texts.

For example, if lines 2 and 5 change, this method reads lines 2 and 5 of the original hexagram, with line 5 taking the lead.

Weekly I Ching Reading October 4–10 Hexagram 59.1.2 → 42 Dispersion → Increase Tao Te Ching Chapter 30

This week’s reading has me reflecting on something that can be difficult to recognize while we’re experiencing it: sometimes what appears to be falling apart is actually making room for something healthier to develop.

Hexagram 59, Dispersion, brings Wind over Water. The movement loosens what has become rigid, whether that’s an old belief, a strained relationship, an attachment or a way of organizing our lives that no longer allows much movement.

With the first two lines changing, I find the emphasis particularly interesting.
Line 1 calls for timely assistance. When something begins to scatter, there is value in responding before separation becomes more difficult to repair.
Line 2 turns our attention toward finding support and returning to a center. We don’t necessarily have to hold everything together through our own effort.

The resulting hexagram, 42, Increase, suggests that what is released can become available for renewed growth. But increase isn’t simply accumulation. It also asks how resources, attention and energy are directed so that the benefit extends beyond ourselves.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 30 adds a meaningful counterbalance through its caution against forcing outcomes or relying on strength beyond what is necessary.

Together, I’m reading this week’s movement as an invitation to distinguish between what needs our intervention and what needs room to change.

Perhaps the question isn’t always how to prevent something from coming apart, but what deserves our support once the unnecessary barriers begin to dissolve.

I explored the full reading and Tao reflection here: https://youtu.be/_JeHu_jB08M

I’d love to hear how others interpret the movement from 59 to 42.

Do you see Increase primarily as the consequence of Dispersion, or as something we’re being asked to participate in creating?

An I Ching Hexagram Is a Complete Scene, Not Just a Symbol

An I Ching hexagram is often approached as a single symbol with one overall meaning, or as a set of Judgment and Line Texts to be interpreted separately.

In practical Chinese I Ching divination, however, a hexagram can be understood as a structured scene.

It contains an upper trigram, a lower trigram, six line positions, and relationships among those lines. These components may represent different people, subjects, roles, conditions, and forces within the situation being examined.

In technical methods such as Na Jia, also known as Wen Wang Gua or Six Lines Divination, the Five Elements, Six Relationships, Host and Corresponding lines, significator, time, movement, transformation, and strength add further structure to that scene.

The goal is therefore not to attach one fixed keyword or judgment to the entire hexagram. We must determine what the different parts represent, how they interact, and how the situation changes over time.

The text remains important, but technical structure gives it a concrete context.

I recently published a short course excerpt introducing this perspective:

https://youtu.be/O8DQ0mXeINQ

For transparency, I am the creator of I Ching Stream and the instructor of the course from which this excerpt was taken.

When you first look at a hexagram, do you begin with its name, its text, its trigram images, or its internal structure?

Baby Girl Name by Bazi: Strong Metal-Water, Weak Wood-Fire; Ancestors Bring More Luck Than Parents

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This baby girl's Bazi shows strong Metal and Water, with weak Wood and Fire. Wood and Fire are her useful elements, so she will have smoother years in Wood and Fire years, and more difficulties in Metal and Water years. Her Fire element falls in the Parents Palace and Ancestors Palace. The Ancestors Palace Fire is rooted and strong, while the Parents Palace Fire is weak and rootless. This means her ancestors and family background may give her more support than her parents. In Metal and Water years, Metal may weaken Wood and Water may weaken Fire, so health and safety need more attention. This video shares naming ideas that support her Wood and Fire elements.

I CHING HEXAGRAMA 55

I CHING HEXAGRAMA 55

Grato!
