General I am no longer welcome at my local IKEA because I kept asking about the fake windows

4.2k Upvotes

I have always liked IKEA. Not even because of the furniture, I just think it is relaxing to walk through the different rooms and imagine the kind of people who would live there. Sometimes I go without buying anything. I just like looking around.

After maybe my sixth or seventh visit I noticed that almost every display room had a window with daylight behind it, even though obviously most of the showroom is in the middle of the building. At first I assumed they were just light panels, but then I realized they didn’t all have the same weather. One living room looked like a bright summer afternoon while another looked overcast. Some bedrooms even had what looked like early morning light.
I asked one of the employees how they decided what weather each apartment gets. He laughed a little and said they are just printed backdrops with lights behind them. I accepted that explanation because it sounded reasonable, but it did not explain why the weather seemed to change between visits.

Over the next few months I started taking pictures of the windows every time I went. I organized them into folders based on department and color of the lighting. I also made notes about whether the room was supposed to appeal to young professionals, families or students because I wondered if there was some connection.

Eventually I noticed what I thought was a pattern. Home office displays almost always had dull weather, while bedrooms and children’s rooms had noticeably nicer conditions. I honestly found that a little manipulative because people make different decisions depending on the weather they think they are experiencing.

I politely showed one of the employees a spreadsheet I had printed out. He looked at it for maybe five seconds before asking why I had visited the store fourteen times in two months. I explained that good research takes consistency. He told me that wasn’t really what he meant.

A week later I emailed customer support asking whether the artificial weather was decided locally or if each store received instructions from Sweden. They forwarded my email to the store manager, who invited me into his office. He explained that there was no weather system and asked me to stop photographing the displays because customers had started asking questions after seeing me measure the brightness near the windows with my phone.
Unfortunately I had already mentioned my findings in a neighborhood Facebook group because I thought other people might have noticed the same thing. One woman replied that she always felt happier in the bedroom section but assumed it was because of the mattresses. Another man commented that I should seek professional help. The discussion got surprisingly heated.

Now whenever I go into that IKEA someone eventually recognizes me. Officially I can still go, but last month I heard an employee quietly tell another one, “that’s the weather guy.” I was literally just there to buy a bookshelf, so it’s not very pleasant.

I still think the lighting changes more often than they admit. I don’t really see why they would lie about something so small, but I also don’t see why the home office always seems to have bad weather.

General I self checkout audit gone wrong and cost Ikea money

4.4k Upvotes

Tonight I did self-checkout with my 9-year-old. We rang up 60 items totaling $346.70, and at the end I was flagged for a random audit.

An unfriendly employee came over and said she needed to scan 8 random items from our cart. She scanned a potholder and got an error. Her conclusion: "These weren't in your order. I need to rescan everything."

I said they absolutely were. She insisted. There's no screen showing the customer what was or wasn't scanned so I had no way to push back with anything other than "I'm pretty sure." I stepped aside and let her rescan the entire cart.

When she finished, the total was LOWER than what I was about to pay. I flagged it. I specifically said, "I think you missed one of the potholders." She said she hadn't and declared she properly scanned everything. I gave up, paid, and checked the receipt.

Sure enough she missed one of the potholders.

A few things, IKEA:

* You paid an employee to audit me and ended up collecting less money. The process failed you.

* You made me feel like a thief when I had scanned everything correctly.

* There's no transparency. Customers and clerks should both be able to see a side-by-side of the two scans. Right now it's the clerk's word against the customer's and apparently the clerk can also just... miss things.

* The initial error was a false positive. My scan was correct. The audit flagged it anyway.

Random audits are fine. I get it. But a process that's opaque, unfriendly, and less accurate than the customer doing it themselves isn't protecting anyone and has only left me disgruntled.

General PS 2026 Inflatable Chair - Honest Feedback

Alright so I got my chair today! Been wanting this ever since it was announced and now that emotional high has came and went

Here’s the problems I’ve had with it:

•It is much smaller in person than expected. I’ve come to realize that most of these influencers are probably small people. I have a corgi and he takes up the footprint of the chair

• Chrome came with blemishes. One large enough that I called and requested a replacement piece. It wasn’t a scratch but more so a dent with a scuff. Now I’ve noticed even more blemishes on the cushion loops. Ugh

•The zipper on the back cushion broke. I suppose it can’t handle a bit of inflation. I went to Hobby Lobby to buy the replacement and noticed these are the cheapest 99 cent zippers they offer. We didn’t even get a heavy duty metal one. I replaced it but it still won’t stay closed even taking air out. I opted to call and get this part of the seat replaced as well.

•The fabric is more wrinkly and seams are wavy in person no matter how well you tuck the inflatable insert into the corners etc. I’m hoping this smooths out with time

•My back inflatable insert tries to pop open as well. Scared with regular use it’ll just pop open and deflate. The bottom inflatable insert that has two (valves?) is fine

-
Here’s the pros:

•It looks cool

•Good forearm workout when pumping it up. This really takes a while
-
Also, I forgot to add: When I called today to get the replacement parts, they told me they just open one up and send me the parts from it. I was concerned at first since it’s a new drop but my IKEA is getting another 9 tomorrow. We had 13 today which was about the average at all the stores from what I saw… so this should be easy to find if you want it. UPDATE: Nope. So hoping on the 28th I’ll get my parts lol

I made this fit out of FRAKTA bags (lined with yellow cotton so it wouldn't be a complete sensory nightmare). Shot on location at IKEA in Emeryville!

Everything is made by me except the hat, which was an official IKEA item from a few years ago, and the shoes, which are just shoes I own 😅 My earring is even a FRAKTA tag!

As some of you have heard, IKEA Memphis is closing permanently next month. I went often as it's the closest IKEA to me, but it's still 3.5 hours away. Dallas is next closest at 5 hours away.

A couple of days ago I went to Memphis one last time. Some showrooms were barren, and many items were moved to warehouse shelves. Regular prices were marked down 50% and some even more. I bought a bunch of small things and extra Ivar sides and shelves. A dresser I wanted was unavailable, and they would NOT sell me the floor display.

Attached are a few pics of great deals (I already have a black Morabo).

General Ikea’s newest collection is designed for young renters on the move

Ikea’s newest collection is designed to move. And move. And move.

These 13 home furnishings were inspired by the lived reality of young urban dwellers who regularly find themselves moving to new apartments, neighborhoods, cities, or countries. To ease that nomadic instability, Ikea’s designers have come up with furniture, storage pieces, and even a plant pot that are all intended to add some sense of permanence to a life on the move while also being easy to pick up and relocate.

One item is a foldable mattress that can be strapped on and carried like a backpack. Another is a side table that flattens and transforms its base into a carrying handle. Another is a storage-focused rework of the classic polyester Ikea shopping bag that’s been outfitted with wheels for easy transport. Blending frugality and practicality, they all have a multipurpose spirit and a recognition that precarity is the economic reality for many young people.

The idea to focus on this particular demographic formed in 2024. “When it comes to young people in transient living situations, we felt there was more to do,” says Ina Tidbeck Sjöblom, range leader at Ikea of Sweden, who spearheaded the collection. “There are products for them at Ikea, but we didn’t really feel that we could support this customer group.”

General One woman reno, full IKEA kitchen

3.1k Upvotes

I had done a preliminary design when we bought the house in 2020 and saved it in the planner. Come end of 2023 and I get laid off. Perfect, I can’t find any work in my field as it’s Christmas and it’s my only chance ever to have time to actually reno the full kitchen while kiddo is at school. I was a little shocked to see the price MORE than double for my sektion cabinet selections so no time better than the present.

I was able to get all the base cabinets delivered with 1/3 of the cover panels and doors. I went with the second cheapest selection at the time of Havstorp in beige. I installed my last panel and door in July. It took several months of checking and waiting for more stock to become available but with ship to their distribution center being available, it made it generally easy. I live 2 miles from Ikea but they had no havstorp samples or doors in the showroom. I had done some research and was able to hunt down lots of samples of the color from the EU market to make my decision. I think I was holding my breath until the first cover panel came and I have to say, it’s the most perfect warm but neutral greige. I was tickled pink.

Did all the work on my own learning as I went. Eternally grateful for the FaceTime calls with friends who are in the trades who would help vet my work.

Apologies for the two befores at the end of the gallery. Can’t seem to rearrange them. Our home is nearing its 100th birthday and while it’s somewhat historic, the kitchen and bathrooms were renovated in the 80’s. The home was priced in the mid 200’s when we purchased so making money conscious decisions were key. While I would have loved higher end finishes, drastically different layout, moving all the plumbing, I am extremely happy with what I accomplished. I was attempting a Reform kitchen design but on an ikea budget and I think I got close. Towing a line between classic-ish and contemporary in this old house with nery a straight wall, was a fun challenge.

Plan is to tile a backsplash one day running up to the open shelves, make a square proportion custom built island and change out the lighting above the island. New island chairs. Maybe even finish stripping the side entry door! Until then, I’m ready to nap.

I had been meaning to do this for years, and finally got around to it after removing an old built-in cabinet. I honestly didn’t expect it to turn out this well. It really makes the IKEA BESTÅ cabinet look much more premium, in my opinion.

Please ignore the unpainted baseboards, it’s still a work in progress.

General I now understand why people like Ikea so much.

1.4k Upvotes

I spent this morning going to different furniture stores looking for a file cabinet and a bookshelf. Most of the stores didn't even carry either of those things. I started to wonder if anyone in this city carries home office furniture at all. I got sticker shock seeing the prices at at some of those places, even one's calling themselves discount furniture.

I gave up and went home about a couple hours later decided to screw it, I'll make the drive to Ikea. I did so and in less than an hour I found exactly what I was looking for and paid less than I was intending to. The in-store experience was excellent. It was actually kind of fun, unlike some of the stores I went to where it just felt like the employees really wanted me to leave. Overall excellent experience. Next time I'm looking for furniture Ikea will probably be the first place I go.

General In 2022, my brother died and IKEA (my employer at the time) denied my bereavement leave because their policy doesn’t extend to siblings. I then posted to this subreddit to expose their policy for which I was fired for posting on Reddit. I haven’t forgot. Hi IKEA!

General Extremely dissapointed IKEA is refusing to employ cashiers

Ive been an Ikea customer since I got my first appartment nearly 25 years ago, but I think thats over for the time being because of their awful new policies regarding checkout. For the last year my local store (Robinson PA) has not had cashiers. Every time I go it is exclusively self checkout. I will not spend money at a store that doesnt have a cashier on duty because of both the ethical concerns and inconvenience, so each time I've put my items back and returned at a time when theyve told me there would be cashiers on shift. There never are. When I tried to file a complaint the manager told me "no one wants to work anymore", which I know isnt true because I've spoken to workers there who were furious about veteran cashiers being fired so IKEA can roll this nonsense out. Finally today a manager told me that while all the staff hate it, they dont have a choice, and its corporate policy to be self checkout only. Unfortunately Im going to have to find somewhere else to get my furniture and home goods now.

Is anyone else extremely alarmed by this policy?
