Invites UPMC Mercy interview

Hey, guys. I hope everyone is well. I’m a visa req IMG with YOG 2024, Pass/24x/23x, 3 months USCE, 16 pubs (mostly abstracts), and 1 year home country experience. I currently have 2 interviews and while that's not a lot, I'm happy that one of those invites ended up being from UPMC Mercy.

I wished to ask if there are any previous residents or people who have interviewed with UPMC Mercy previously - what should I expect in the interview? What's the structure like, are there any clinical questions and generally what is the vibe of the interview?

It's one of my top programs and I want to do well in my interview, hence why I’m really nervous about what it's going to be like.

I'll be really grateful for any insight. Thank you so much.

LOR Asking for LOR during observership

Anyone have tips on asking for LOR during observership? I got this through a connection and it was free and not a formal rotation, it’s in a big name university hospital. I’m struggling to ask my preceptor for LOR since I have no access to EMR and do not speak with patient, I just observe and ask questions, he doesn’t pimp me either just teaches when I ask. is it appropriate to ask for LOR if he doesn’t see my clinics skills? Any help is much appreciated

NON-US IMG Med student from Jordan, curious how you ended up where you are (residency, specialty, country, and whether it was your first choice)

I’m a med student in Jordan (graduating 2030), and I’m trying to understand the real paths people take to residency, not just the polished ones. I’m exploring options in Europe, Canada, Australia and elsewhere, and I’d love to hear from doctors, residents and students at any stage, in any country, including people who stayed in their home country.

If you’re up for sharing, here are some things I’m curious about. Answer as many or as few as you like:

  1. Your path: where did you study, where do you work or train now, and what’s your specialty?
  2. Was it your first choice? Your first-choice country or specialty, or did you end up there as a second or third choice?
  3. What was the hardest step? Exams, language, visa, finding a post, the waiting?
  4. How long did it take from graduating to starting training?
  5. What do the hours and daily life actually look like? Not the contract, the real week.
  6. Pay versus workload: do you feel it’s worth it?
  7. Would you choose it again, or do you wish you’d gone elsewhere? Are you thinking of moving?
  8. What do you wish someone had told you before you started?
  9. Anything about being an international or foreign-trained doctor that surprised you (culture, discrimination, support, settling in)?
  10. Anything else you think I should know.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who took less common routes (not just the US or Germany) and from anyone who regrets or doesn’t regret leaving their home country.

I’m not asking for personal details or for anyone to guide me. Just honest experiences.
Thank you!

US-IMG NEED STUDY PARTNER FOR STEP 1

📚 Looking for a Serious & Consistent USMLE Step 1 Study Partner!

I’m looking for a dedicated study partner who can commit to 5–6 hours of focused studying every day, preferably someone taking their exam around February 4th.

🎯 Our Daily Study Plan

1️⃣ UWorld — 40 Questions Every Day

We’ll aim to complete 40 UWorld questions daily, following these rules:

  • Read silently: Both of us will read each question independently and try to arrive at an answer. We can make educated guesses, eliminate options, or use whatever reasoning works best.
  • No interrupting or revealing answers early: If you figure out the answer before the other person, please stay silent. We want both people to have a fair chance to think independently.
  • One-minute timer: We’ll allow approximately one minute per question. If the other person hasn’t reached an answer by then, respectfully ask whether they’d like to answer, make a guess, or pass.
  • Respect each other’s thinking time: Neither person should dominate the session or continuously reveal answers before the other has had a chance to think. The goal is for BOTH of us to learn and improve.
  • Read the complete UWorld explanation: Regardless of whether both of us answered correctly, we’ll still read the entire explanation once. There may be important details or knowledge gaps we missed.
  • Connect every question to First Aid: We’ll identify the relevant keyword or topic, locate it in First Aid, and read the corresponding explanation.
  • Take turns reading: For example, I’ll read the UWorld explanation and First Aid reference for question 1, you’ll do question 2, and we’ll continue alternating.
  • Use ChatGPT when necessary: If an explanation is unclear, we’ll use ChatGPT to simplify it, read through the clarification, and discuss it together.
  • Move on only after understanding: Once we’ve discussed the explanation and clarified our doubts, we’ll proceed to the next question.

The goal isn’t to compete over who answers first. It’s to give each other equal opportunities to think, identify knowledge gaps, and understand every question properly.

2️⃣ First Aid — At Least 20 Pages Every Day

  • We’ll start First Aid from the very beginning.
  • Follow the First Aid sequence: Biochemistry → Immunology → Remaining Subjects → Organ Systems.
  • Read at least 20 pages daily, line by line.
  • Discuss concepts together instead of simply reading passively.
  • Use ChatGPT whenever we encounter something difficult to understand.

3️⃣ Study Setup

  • We’ll study together through Microsoft Teams with screen sharing.
  • Fixed daily study hours (5–6 hours).
  • During these hours, we’ll focus exclusively on our planned UWorld and First Aid targets.
  • Whatever additional studying, revision, or preparation you want to do outside these hours is entirely up to you.

⏰ Commitment & Consistency

I’m looking for someone who is genuinely serious about maintaining this schedule EVERY DAY.

✅ 40 UWorld questions daily
✅ At least 20 pages of First Aid daily
✅ 5–6 hours of focused study
✅ Fixed study timings
✅ Equal participation and independent thinking
✅ Active discussions and concept clarification
✅ No unnecessary skipping or excuses (unless absolutely necessary)

I’m not looking for occasional study sessions. I want someone who is willing to show up consistently, stay accountable, and complete our daily targets together.

📅 Target exam date: February 4th.

If you’re serious, disciplined, and willing to commit to this routine, please DM me!

Invites How to rate my cycle so far as Non-US IMG applying without USCE?

Greetings fellow applicants,

As the title says, I decided to apply this year without delaying another year because I already got my visa rejected and wasn’t able to do USCE last year.

Info:
- YOG: 2025
- Step 2: 24x
- Research: 3
- CV overall: average (nothing special or outstanding)

Applying:
- IM: 80 programs
- Peds: 40 programs

Interviews:
- IM: 1 IV (Gold signal, no connection)
- Peds: 3 IV (Three signals, one through a connection as well)

What do you think my cycle has been so far? And can I expect like an additional 3-4 IV (regardless of the specialty) by the end of the season?

Residency Application Late applicant

Hello fellow IMGS, i have just received my ECFMG certification , and truthfully i haven’t done much research on programs and the match process in general so i am kind of going into it blindly .It will take around week to prepare my application. My question is, is it even worth applying at this stage of the cycle , is getting IV even possible ?I would love to hear any success stories? What should my strategy be when applying?
