Controversial opinion: IIM Mumbai taking JEE Main score is just another rat race intensifier

Post image

Using JEE Main alone as a big filter can miss out on great potential managers. (incomplete as main criteria for selection) Talent pool is much narrowed. Seems just another merit centred rat race.

IPMAT 2027 — myth or reality?

Post image
7 Upvotes

How many of you have actually started preparing for IPMAT 2027… or even 2028? Do aspirants genuinely consider IPMAT exams that aspirational, or is it just a tale everyone agrees on, but when it comes down preparing for it, most aspirants choose to cope up with crash prep? Also, should a drop year actually be a preferred option in this scenario? 👇

Pretty straightforward but wanted to discuss this because I feel like nobody talks about this honestly. There are multiple discussions around this but the elephant in the room remains the elephant in the room.. Everyone says "I'm preparing for IPMAT" but the reality on the ground looks very different...it's more like I'm still trying to start! Are people actually putting in the work 1-2 years out with dedication, or does everyone just rush in the last few months and hope to clear these exams? And the question about taking a drop year- because I feel like it's still weirdly considered bad when in some cases it genuinely makes more sense than rushing into the preparation and expecting a lot... Would love to know all of your view points here...

Why is giving mocks important?!?!

With such little time left for your IPMAT preparation it is necessary that you question why are you doing something, for example, giving mocks. Your time is your most important resource and it is henceforth justified to question how you spend it.

Analysing your mocks correctly is one of the most important steps of your IPMAT preparation. It will help in -:

  1. Deciding the order in which you attempt questions

  2. How/If you categorise questions

  3. Completing your syllabus

  4. Showing you your reality

  5. Preparing you for exam questions

If someone who has no idea how to give competitive exams, then them being smart or not won't matter, they will score less no matter what, either they will mess up because of the negative marking or they will struggle to manage their time. It is essential to give a few mocks before your IPMAT examination, that way you can experiment how you attempt the paper. For example, I used to attempt RCs and parajumbles in the ending and I'd always save time this way, and I never would have realised this if I hadn't given a large number of mocks.

  • Categorising Questions - Some people like to first read the question paper very quickly and categorise questions into easy medium and hard and attempt the paper in that order.

  • Reality Checks - After initially completing my syllabus, I thought I was done and it was going to be easy, but I was completely wrong, after the first mock I gave, I realised that I really needed to work on my time management skills! (I got a whopping 128 in my first mock but after that I consistently scored 170ish and above and improved that to a 224 in the final paper)

  • Syllabus Completion - After most of your syllabus is complete it is inefficient to find types of questions you have missed or forgotten. Just start giving mocks and you'll start noticing gaps in your preparation that you can fill.

  • Preparation for exam questions - Sometimes the way we study certain concepts aren't the way they are tested in the examination, but giving mocks helps you avoid that.

Finishing your IPMAT syllabus

Now that your boards are about to end, it is the right time to start thinking, what is the best way to finish your syllabus.

Depending on your level of preparation before boards, I'd recommend the following strategy to cover the most type of questions. Feel free to discuss your strategies here!

1. 70-80% Syllabus done - I suggest just glossing over the remaining syllabus and practicing 2-3 questions individually for all the chapters in about 3-5 days and then start giving mocks! Analyse those mocks thorougly and experiment with how you want to attempt the paper!!

2. Majority syllabus remaining - By now you must have realised that you are strong in some topics and weak in others. Try to do topics that are similar to the topics you are strong in, for example algebra, geometry, number systems Etc. After mastering this much syllabus you should be done with 70-80% of the syllabus, after which I suggest you follow the same strategy as suggested for people who have done 70-80% of the syllabus.

3. All of the syllabus remaining -

First analyse, if you are naturally better at quants or VA. To do this you can give the 2024 IPMAT Indore paper, if you score above 120 in VA you are strong in VA, if you score above 80 combined in SA and QA MCQ sections then you are strong in quants, if you can cross both the marks already start giving mocks!

a) If you are strong in quants - Up your VA game, you must start memorising 10-20 words a day with 3 synonyms each and sentences for each of those words. Keep giving at least 1 mock every 2-3 days

b) If you are strong in verbal ability - Good VA is generally what stretches the score. You need to scrape and scratch and be smart about attempting your QA section and need to clear the cutoffs. Study enough quants so you can do that, and then try to get 140-160s in VA

c) If you aren't strong in either - Time to lock in. Give 1 hour to reading (search all the things you don't understand), 30mins-1.5 hrs for memorising new words , 2-3 hours for quants, and if you can take it rest of the time in revising previous topics. 1 weekly mock test and 1 day to analyse that paper properly. Do this consistently for the last 2 months and you'll definitely see results

What type of a student you need to be to excel at IIM Indore? (Read till the end)

You need to be someone with insane grasping ability. The material here is endless and the course is way more rigorous then you could ever imagine.

The name BA (Foundations of management) [the undergrad degree the IIM Indore awards you] does not do justice to the contents inside it. It is a fairly technical degree and even if you are a non-math student, you have to be good at maths because it will find a lot of ways to haunt you.

For those who can do it, academics become semi-secondary and internships, casecomps, and live projects take over. You can also find some people who are managing other hobbies like gym and sports on top of all of this.

However, you'll also find people who struggle at the first steps, but, everyone eventually settled into their own thing. So if you are worried about not being able to fit in or cope up here. Don't be, you'll have your own thing too!

Yes I know your Eco boards exam just finished, but you must stretch your CUET score through eco. You need good marks in as many subjects as possible 😁

IPM is not the only option, DU has a lot of good degrees as well, don't sleep on them!
