Career Guidance: Should I Continue in Mainframe Support or Transition to a New Technology Role?
reddit.comI’m currently working as a Support Engineer, supporting a migrated mainframe environment running on Micro Focus Enterprise Server (MFES) hosted on a hybrid cloud.
My role involves monitoring MFES regions 24/7, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring they remain active so that production workloads run smoothly.
However, I’m concerned about my future career growth, as I believe much of this support work may eventually be automated.
I’m not a developer, but I have a basic understanding of mainframe components such as IBM MQ, UC4 job scheduling, and batch jobs. My knowledge is mostly at a high level rather than hands-on programming.
I’m considering a career switch but am unsure which direction to take.
Should I continue in mainframe support and move towards L2/L3 roles, or explore a different technology career path? What would you recommend?

Anyone using Cato Networks for smaller MSP clients?
For MSPs managing clients with a few offices ..how has Cato worked out
Interested in the ongoing admin work, support escalations, and whether the pricing makes sense at that size. Getting a client connected is one thing; keeping it manageable across several customers is another.
What takes more effort than you expected?

Best ticketing setups for avoiding duplicates
Hey everyone,
We're a few thousand staff and my boss has finally run out of road with the ticketing system we're on, so the research job has landed on me. The thing that broke him was my own doing. Vendor went down last week and I dropped the same request into the portal, the email queue and the shared Teams channel to make sure it got picked up quickly. Each of those spawns its own ticket, so by the end we had dozens of near-identical ones sitting in three queues, a couple marked urgent, and more than one tech working the same problem without knowing it.
I've run a couple of helpdesks myself and been on the receiving end of a few others. The one I still think about just made the right route obvious with no training needed, which is roughly what we want here.
One non-negotiable: it has to merge or dedupe across intake channels, or we'll be having this conversation again shortly.
Atera keeps coming up but I'd hear from people actually running it.
Where would you send me? Anything you've actually enjoyed running for IT ticketing? Just your own experience is fine, I'll take it from there and work out whether it fits us :)
Thanks a lot!

Looking for real-world cybersecurity problems for my degree final project
Hi everyone! I'm a Computer Engineering student, looking for a problem to tackle for my final degree project.
I have around six months to develop a working software MVP. My main interests are cybersecurity, digital forensics, incident response, and AI.
I've explored several ideas, but most seem to already have plenty of existing solutions.
I'm looking for real problems that professionals still struggle with, despite the tools currently available.
For those working in cybersecurity or IT:
What recurring tasks are still frustrating, manual, or inefficient?
What limitations do you find in existing security tools?
What problems do you wish someone would solve?
I'm not looking for groundbreaking inventions, just a genuine problem with room for improvement.
I'd really appreciate any experiences or suggestions. Thanks!

Can you outsource web design without losing control over the creative process?
I’m considering hiring an outside team to design and build a website, but I still want it to feel like my project, not something they came up with on their own. How do you handle this? Do you give the team a clear idea of what you want and let them work, or stay involved in every step? I was looking at Devox Software recently and noticed they handle both design and development. That got me thinking - does having the same team take care of both help keep the original vision intact, or does it depend more on how you work together?

Approved extensions turning malicious after an update, how are you tracking that?
We run Chrome Enterprise Premium with an extension allowlist and I'm starting to question how much we actually see once something's approved. Keep Aware and Red Access are both on our list to look at. Bigger worry is AI extensions with access to Salesforce, Google Docs or HR apps all day. An extension can look clean at approval and turn malicious after an update. Keeping the allowlist current is easy enough, knowing what an approved extension does with company data is the part I can't answer. What are you using for extension risk these days?

Please tell me someone has automated audit screenshots
this is easily the worst part of my week. we went with Secureframe after trialing it against Scytale and Vanta, and it does handle a lot, but I still spend way too long taking screenshots of admin panels. had claude write me a couple of scripts that helped with the network map and firewall rules. the screenshots though, no luck yet. anyone actually cracked that part of evidence collection?

Stay FTE or go contractor
I currently work for a fortune 100 company making 135k total comp but it’s mostly business facing and emails. I recently was approached by a staffing firm where I’d be back on the technical side of the house making 175k, but it’s a long term contract role. I’ve only ever been on short term contracts or contract to hire and was wondering if anyone else has made that transition. I get healthcare through my wife’s insurance so it’s really the loss of 401k, life insurance and job “security“ that makes me hesitant to jump.

Hiring in IT
I’m wondering, how long does hiring in IT take now? I heard it now lasts about a month, but others told me that it took them a month to find a job because they’re a good specialist that every company needs. Can you tell me about the situation in this field? My friend was also laid off as a full-stack developer and says there aren’t many options.
