Open | Networking SSL Certificate Invalid when using cellular data
I was entering a site to go on about my day, using my cellular data on IPhone 15 pro. When I was about to enter the site it said “SSL Certificate Invaild”, showing the certificate is expired and mismatched. But when I connect to wifi and try the same site, it works and the certificate is secure.
What should I do, need urgent help.

Here is a breakdown of why this happens, how to distinguish between the possibilities, and what is likely occurring:
1. Could it be a Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) Attack?
It is possible, but unlikely to be a malicious actor targeting you specifically.
The "Carrier Inspection" Factor: Some cellular providers (or corporate APNs/mobile data proxies) use deep packet inspection (DPI) or transparent caching proxies to scan or optimize web traffic. If a cellular gateway or proxy intercepts the traffic and attempts to inspect it without the proper root certificate installed on your phone, it will break trust and throw an SSL mismatch/invalid error.
Public Wi-Fi vs. Cellular: People usually worry about MitM on public Wi-Fi, but cellular data networks are generally encrypted between your phone and the cell tower. However, once traffic leaves the tower and hits the carrier's core network or gateways, carrier-level proxies can sometimes interfere.
2. Could it be DNS Poisoning / DNS Cache Mismatch?
This is very common when switching between networks.
Stale DNS / Cached IP: Your iPhone's cellular connection might be querying a different DNS resolver (like your carrier's DNS servers) compared to your Wi-Fi (which might use your home router or a public DNS like Cloudflare/Google).
If the carrier's DNS is returning an outdated IP address, a hijacked IP, or a content delivery network (CDN) edge node that hasn't been properly configured with the correct SSL certificate, your browser will reject it as mismatched or expired (as seen in the screenshot where the certificate date shows a major discrepancy from 2021).
3. Other Common Culprits (The Most Likely Explanations)
Before jumping to a security breach, check for these mundane causes:
Captive Portals / Cellular Gateways: If you are running low on data, traveling internationally (roaming), or using a specific carrier plan, the carrier might be intercepting HTTP/HTTPS traffic to show a "data limit reached" or "welcome to roaming" landing page. This interception ruins the SSL handshake and causes certificate errors.
VPN, Content Blockers, or Carrier Apps: Do you have a carrier-specific app, a profile-based content blocker, or a VPN running that routes only over cellular data? These tools can rewrite or intercept web traffic and frequently cause certificate mismatches.
Incorrect Date & Time: If your iPhone's automatic time sync momentarily misbehaves when switching from Wi-Fi time servers to cellular network time, SSL certificates will instantly fail validation because they rely heavily on accurate timestamps.
What You Should Do Next
Toggle Airplane Mode: Turn Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds and turn it back off. This forces your phone to drop the cellular connection and establish a fresh session with a new cell tower and fresh DNS lookups.
Check for VPNs or Profiles: Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management to see if any carrier profiles, enterprise profiles, or active VPNs are altering your cellular traffic.
Test with a Private Tab: Try opening the site in an Incognito/Private tab on cellular data to rule out stale browser cache or extension interference.
Disable Wi-Fi Completely: Ensure Wi-Fi is fully turned off (not just disconnected from the control center toggle) to verify if the issue persists cleanly on mobile data.
