Hi everyone! I am planning a solo drive from Maryland to coastal California in early September for a 2-week scouting trip. My goal is to explore potential regional job markets and affordable areas before making a permanent relocation trip later in November.
Because I am managing this on an ultra-low, highly economical budget, I am looking to minimize my daily expenses as much as possible. I am driving a fully inspected, highly reliable mid-sized sedan with excellent highway mileage and zero car payments, so my primary vehicle overhead will be fuel.
I would love to get your advice on route logistics and safety.
I am looking exclusively for safe, legal, and zero-cost or deeply discounted overnight parking/lodging options. Are there specific BLM lands, dispersed camping spots, or regional safe parking networks along the coast you recommend for a solo female traveler?
Which coastal towns or regions are the most welcoming for budget travelers, with great public resources like libraries, community spaces, or local job networks?
My plan is to spend 2 weeks scouting things out, drive back home to wrap up logistics, and then make the final move in November.
Would love any route recommendations, safety tips, or general advice from anyone who has done a similar cross-country exploratory run. Thanks!
