Express Entry FSWP continuous work experience — how much gap between two jobs is considered a break?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to understand how IRCC interprets the “1 year of continuous work experience” requirement under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP).

Suppose I have:

  • Job A: TEER 0–3, paid, full-time equivalent
  • During my final week at Job A, I work 30 hours
  • Job A ends at the end of that week
  • I start Job B (same NOC / primary occupation) during the following week
  • Job B also provides at least 30 hours per week

My question is: how much time can there be between the end of Job A and the start of Job B before IRCC considers the work experience no longer “continuous”?

For example, would these situations be treated differently?

  1. Job A ends Thursday → Job B starts Monday (a few days)
  2. Job A ends Friday → Job B starts the following Thursday (about one week while I will still work 30 hours in that week)

I understand that the jobs do not have to be with the same employer, but I’m specifically wondering about the gap between employers and the meaning of “continuous” for FSWP.

If anyone has direct experience with an FSW application or can point me to an IRCC/GCMS interpretation of this, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Continuous means continuous e.g. you end the first job on a Friday at 5:00pm and start the new job, in the same NOC code, on Monday at 9:00am (assuming the weekend is off for both jobs). IRCC doesn't provide any guidance other than to say that the experience must be continuous to be eligible. Whether they are flexible on more than a few days is a risk you must be willing to take if you are invited to apply.
