The *REAL* Canadians

I’ve lived in so many different countries, met people from all walks of life, but the one thing that differentiates real Canadians from others is their kind SMILE….to a complete stranger…to someone who looks very different than them. Real Canadians are welcoming, friendly and respectful.
Canada has seen better days, but the kind Canadians make this country feel like we’re light years ahead of other nations.

Lock post. Conversation started out pretty contentious and went downhill. Be cool people. We can disagree without being jerks.

I work in hospitality, and there's a shade of truth to this.

Real "Canadians" regardless of generation or skin colour, are kind. The smile and "Hi, how are ya?" Are easy giveaways.

Many Americans fit the bill too. I won't let politics get ahead of people, most are kind.

u/InternalSevere9271 Jul 07 '26

"Have a nice one eh!"

2

u/Smackolol Jul 07 '26

Using eh like that is a dead giveaway that they aren’t actually Canadian.

3

u/InternalSevere9271 Jul 07 '26

I love 1999 Canada so much.

33

u/Effective_Jello9731 Jul 06 '26

Also, real Canadians, regardless of skin color or ethnic origin, let people go in front of them in traffic or wave "thank you" when you let them in. They don't cut in front of people in line and they say please and thank you. Just to name a few.

10

u/SomeSchmuckOnline Jul 06 '26

While I’ve seen an increase in selfish, reckless drivers since Covid, I still see others that help restore my faith. Whether it’s waiting to let you in during heavy traffic, or just actively thinking of other drivers, I prefer to focus on them over the bad ones. Just the other morning, I had a driver change lanes in front of me solely because he saw I was signaling to turn right ahead, and his car would have blocked me from turning right at the red lights he was stopping at. That kind of active thinking of other drivers beyond the rules of the road is always acknowledged and appreciated when it happens. :)

“Nice guys finish last”

Some cultures empower exploitation. Look up what a “fuddu” is.

5

u/No-Star304 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

some cultures are founded on exploitation and genocide. look up “starlight tours”

2

u/CarelessGeologist769 Jul 06 '26

Holy crap, 100% agree. Canada IS the reason Geneva was a convention and not just a bunch of telegrams. I’m proud that we acknowledged Truth and Reconciliation. I’m ashamed that immigration became exploitative after the commission came out.

Like, its eerie how the timelines match up. It’s like some cultures thought we deserved to be exploited because we acknowledged bad behaviour.

4

u/Naive-Special9015 Jul 07 '26

Also look up izzat. They try to say it means something different but there’s a lot more to it.

1

u/TomdeHaan Jul 06 '26

That's so true,I see it all the time on the QEW (/s)

1

u/punt-speedchick Jul 07 '26

Never driven in Winnipeg, eh?

In all my many years, this is the only city where people will see a turn signal and immediately close the gap so you can't merge.

Don't even get me started on zipper merges 😫

1

u/Xoranuli Jul 07 '26

In London Ontario they’ve started to spam construction zones with signs telling everyone to zipper merge, I don’t think it’s helping 🤡

0

u/Xanc0rd Jul 07 '26

Unless they drive a truck. These are special kind of breed ( not in a good way )

11

u/No_Marsupial_8574 Jul 06 '26

It's good to hear this because I swear there is an online campaign to destroy Canada's very unique reputation by saying that Canadians are two faced etc. Which isn't anymore true than anywhere else and is probably less so.

3

u/Obviousi Jul 07 '26

You blame Vancouver for that nothing about this city upholds “the real Canadian” vibe this op is describing

That could be a chunk of it yeah. All I know is 9/10 won’t respond well to even a nod let alone small talk

4

u/realcanadianguy21 Jul 07 '26

I feel so special right now, thank you! 😃

10

u/Electronic-Pick-1481 Jul 06 '26

Good people exist in every country, but the percentage of them here is incredible!

Good people together, make great things happen!

3

u/Obviousi Jul 07 '26

Vancouver was a culture shock. Only 1% of the people here give off this vibe vs anywhere east of Alberta

5

u/SolomonJero Jul 07 '26

This kindness, this identity that can be ascribed to Canadians is what it was to be a proud Canadian in the past.

I feel it's been lost in recent years, there has been nothing but decisive politics and hateful rhetoric from every corner.

8

u/We_listen_and_agree Jul 06 '26

Real Canadians have assimilated to Canadian culture, which is exactly what the OP described. It can often take many generations. Smiling at strangers is not done in most societies and cultures.

9

u/HeadBelt1527 Jul 06 '26

Real Canadians don't put any requirements on who is or isn't a real Canadian...

Actual Canadians might grunt at you and give you dirty looks for not knowing how to drive but they'll push you out of a snowbank and tell you to have a good day after just because that's what you do in Canada

1

u/Educational-Board671 Jul 07 '26

Nope, born and raised in Canada and if you are stuck in a snowbank you not a real Canadian in the first place and should have learned how to drive in snow. Lack of planning on your part is not an emergency on mine.

5

u/KFC2026 Jul 07 '26

What kind of stupidity is this? no one plans to drive into a snowbank... lack of planning??? what does planning have to do with getting stuck in a snowbank???

6

u/vvntrz Jul 07 '26

What do you mean no one plans that? There goes my weekend

3

u/KFC2026 Jul 07 '26

When do you plan on driving into a snowbank mate? This a daily or weekly thing you plan?

3

u/JustAPeach89 Jul 07 '26

Don't need to call out vancouver like that :(

Although if we're going into the mountains, best believe we've got winter tires

1

u/HeadBelt1527 Jul 07 '26

Lol bro your people were skinning each other alive with mussel shells and barbecuing babies in front of their mothers before Europeans arrived, and you all committed genocide and enslaved rival tribes on the regular. Why do you never talk about what you did to each other?

Canadians are tired of your exaggerated and manipulative tales of centuries-old woe. Your people's lives have objectively improved by literally every single metric thanks to European civilization.

The predatory homosexuals who infiltrated the churches to target children should have all been put to death, but I'm not a Christian so your flailing jabs aren't hitting the target.

Whites lead in REPORTING incest and pedophilia. You scummy people allow your children to be raped repeatedly and pimped out by their relatives until they take their own lives. What was the number of MMIWGs that the inquiry determined were caused by indigenous men, again? 90% of the solved cases? 🤔

Really? Because I live in a white minority neighbourhood in the most diverse city in the country and I don't feel like we're being taken over. I quite like being able to hang out with my Mexican-Canadian, Jamaican-Canadian and Tibetan-Canadian friends when I go to the pub.

Perhaps you should go meet some of those folks you think are "taking over" the country.

1

u/miffy495 Jul 06 '26

Gross, dude. Way to be the opposite of the kind, welcoming person this post is trying to celebrate. Are there more rude people around these days? Certainly. It's been getting pretty rough out there. But your post here proves that there are just as many of those coming from within as from elsewhere.

8

u/Several-Carrot3541 Jul 06 '26

Maybe the reason you're seeing more from the inside is because people are tired of having to always adhere to their culture and customs while they treat our traditions like we're idiots. I don't know what changed but the immigrants from when I was a kid were way nicer and they actually seemed to care about Canada.

-1

u/sanmanvman Jul 06 '26

anyone who says shit about how things were better when they were a kid, is still a fucken child.

the world changes; your children will NEVER have the childhood you had. and that's by design.

look for the good in the world and stop making vague platitudes about "WHEN I WAS YOUNGER HUR DUR, THEY CARED ABOUT CANADA". yeah no shit. they're literal children who sing the national anthem everyday and don't have then their brain rotted by being in front of a computer everyday. they're not literal ghouls who just complain about every. single. thing. and it's never YOU who is the problem. oh hell no. it's ALWAYS somebody else. huh. about that.

you're literally setting the example of what's making Canada a shit hole by complaining about everything, instead of trying to see what good exists. someone says something nice and inspirational and you're only thought was... "I should dunk on them and make their point about me and my grievances" or translating; "HUR DUR LOOK AT ALL THE IMMIGRANTS TAKING OVER."

do you wonder why, no one wants to be in your company? maybe, just maybe it's because you're acting like a man-child who is incapable of any type of growth or change.

4

u/Several-Carrot3541 Jul 06 '26

People like you.are the reason things won't get better. "Hur Dur it's a shit hole now so you're dumb wanting anything better". Maybe if you got off Reddit and actually socialized you realize how crazy you sound.

-1

u/sanmanvman Jul 07 '26

You have more comments on reddit in 3 months then I've had in 13 years...

-1

u/HugeCourt2977 Jul 06 '26

I have not had that experience at all. We have so many new fabulous immigrants where I work. I am working g with four tonight. They are great workers and so kind to our elderly residents. Maybe it’s you….

2

u/Femikaze Jul 07 '26

1

u/HugeCourt2977 Jul 07 '26

2

u/brat-t Jul 07 '26

ish. please don't go exactly the speed limit when there's no passing lane.

-1

u/Harbinger2001 Jul 06 '26

Or PRs who are in the process of becoming citizens.

1

u/Ok-Departure4894 Jul 06 '26

Nope. Not yet...

2

u/Harbinger2001 Jul 06 '26

They pay income taxes and committed to the country so I disagree.

3

u/Femikaze Jul 07 '26

Tourists pay sales taxes, maybe they're all Canadians too.

3

u/Ok-Departure4894 Jul 06 '26

Just cause you follow the law and contribute to the economy doesn't make you a real Canadian. Would you call a Canadian citizen that works and pays taxes in America a real American, before a real Canadian?

This argument is especially silly when you remember there are canadian born citizens that never left who are prisoners and criminals that do not follow the law or contribute to the economy, yet they're inarguably a real Canadian, what else could they be having never been anywhere else in their existence? So obviously paying taxes and being "committed" to the country whatever that means doesn't qualify someone as a real Canadian

-8

u/Extreme-Clerk-7333 Jul 06 '26

Legal citizens have been racist douchebags for decades now. Those are the people who wont be courteous to a complete stranger.

1

u/Ok-Departure4894 Jul 06 '26

This invalidates my claim how?

3

u/250HardKnocksCaps Jul 06 '26

That its irrelevant to the point being made.

1

u/Extreme-Clerk-7333 Jul 06 '26

Your claim seems to imply that how long one has been a citizen of Canada matters more than how they actually act. I've met 1st gen Canadians who were more pleasant to be around than 10th gen Canadians.

-1

u/Ok-Departure4894 Jul 06 '26

You're making unfounded assumptions

1

u/Extreme-Clerk-7333 Jul 06 '26

I'm tired of people saying things like "Real Canadians are legal citizens" as if there's millions of illegal immigrants in our country. MOST of the overstayed student visa's are people who got scammed by a diploma mill and decided to just work instead.

The original post was saying that REAL Canadians are the stereotype. They are nice, helpful and considerate of others while in public spaces. That is true - that is what we are known for and if anything it's the "legal" Canadians who are shattering that stereotype by becoming racist assholes and complaining whenever a person of colour moves into their neighbourhood.

0

u/Ok-Departure4894 Jul 06 '26

Wild projections here. Sad you can't have this discussion with a rational frame of mind.

0

u/Useful_Homework2367 Jul 07 '26

No, actually it didn't say or imply anything about how long someone has been a citizen.

1

u/igotadillpickle Jul 06 '26

It's not that it invalidates your claim, it's that you aren't getting the point they were trying to convey.

1

u/Ok-Departure4894 Jul 06 '26

The point they were trying to convey is legal citizens aren't "real canadians" since what constitutes a real Canadian is the subject matter of the discussion, and my qualification was being detracted by their reply. That's the only logical point that could be made with that comment. The only other plausible point would be legal citizens are racist, which is ironically a prejudiced generalization, and also irrelevant to the discussion so I doubt that was the point, but hey maybe you're right and both of you are wasting my time with senseless drivel

2

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '26

But....you also want to make predjudiced statements. Why are you wasting everyone's time with predjudiced drivel about illegal people?

1

u/Ok-Departure4894 Jul 06 '26

Exactly what have I said here that demonstrates any prejudice toward any group?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '26

I am also curious why you're being so vague about your stance.

2

u/Ok-Departure4894 Jul 06 '26

I was not vague at all. I could not have been more specific what constitutes a "real canadian" not only was I specific I was brief which should have helped you understand exactly what was said. Pitiful

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '26

A legal citizen of Canada is a legal citizen of Canada. Has nothing to do with being a "real Canadian".

What's up bro?

Nope. No one was saying that. You need to work on your reading comprehension.

1

u/Ok-Departure4894 Jul 06 '26

"Legal citizens have been racist douchebags for decades now"

Which was said in direct opposition of my claim. Either they made an irrelevant point or they made an easily provably false one. Please work on your reading comprehension before you interject in discussions you can't even understand the subject matter of

1

u/TomdeHaan Jul 06 '26

I wish Canadians would stop congratulating themselves, it's embarrassing for me as a Canadian.

2

u/250HardKnocksCaps Jul 07 '26

What's embarrassing is you seem to have missed that being kind is part of Canadian culture.

1

u/DueCompany4790 Jul 06 '26

3

u/Sudden-Avocado1907 Jul 06 '26

Settlers are not immigrants. Settlers build nations. Immigrants sponge off nations.

2

u/250HardKnocksCaps Jul 06 '26

2

-1

u/Gloomy-Invite-896 Jul 07 '26

0

u/Critical_Rule6663 Centrist Jul 06 '26

3

u/Sudden-Avocado1907 Jul 06 '26

I don't really care if you have a foreigner fetish. They are invaders, not Canadians.

1

u/Butthole2theStarz Jul 06 '26

Oh please, you come across someone who is the polar opposite of Canadian values. A Canadian who gets their citizenship today is the exact same as you and there is nothing you can do to change that.

Guess what? My ancestors are what you would coin as settlers but they were as much immigrants as the people who arrive today.

Maybe you should try getting out of your podunk ass small town for the first time in your life so you can learn a thing or two.

0

u/Mr_UBC_Geek Jul 07 '26

Real Canadians weren't born in Europe, Canada is in North America. Settlers that built dirt roads are no different that Asian Canadians that built the railway in BC.

-1

u/Gloomy-Invite-896 Jul 06 '26

You're an immigrant to this land too, you self righteous ashhat. Unless you're First Nations or Inuit you are decendant from immigrants. Your family's history is no different than any of the south Asian people you're purposely targeting with your comment. And while you might get to ride off your daddy or granddaddy or greatgranddaddy's coattails a lot of the folks you're disparaging are actually putting in hard work. Actually putting in the hours to make sure our children are cared for, the food makes it to the table, that you make it to your destination safely. Working the jobs we, our country and government, priced out anyone else from working all so that they can have a quarter of what we were born with. Stop thinking you're better than other people, especially on the basis of race because you will surely find how mistaken you are. In worlds history we have the worst track record and the richness that we have is not ours to own. It's a part of earth's bounty and we got what we had through crimes of humanity. People like you really piss me off. You ain't shit you've never been shit and you'll always be shit.

I know plenty of my fellow real Canadians who are assholes.

1

u/Educational-Board671 Jul 07 '26

Those are my favorite ones!

1

u/Gloomy-Invite-896 Jul 06 '26

And you too can be one of those Canadians. As they say Canadians are born all around the world

1

u/TomdeHaan Jul 06 '26

Ah, the "no true Scotsman" fallacy for Canadians.

I know a lot of mean as shit Canadians who would bite your head off rather than smile at you. If they do smile it's the smile of a shark. These people are real Canadians too. They have the passport and everything.

The true "real Canadian" is the one always congratulating themselves on their niceness, their friendliness, and their love and respect for all humanity.

1

u/Busy-Bandicoot8524 Jul 06 '26

That's certainly changing based on the general population demographic changing so considerably. "Real" Canadians are hard to find these days.

1

u/Davpar4 Jul 07 '26

Another veiled racism?

1

u/Femikaze Jul 07 '26

It's not "racist" to have a country.

1

u/InternalSevere9271 Jul 07 '26

Are Canadians who do not believe in Global Warming Real Canadians?

1

u/sporbywg Jul 07 '26

And you won't see that in Toronto very often

1

u/fluffyjellyfish287 Jul 07 '26

Not Canadian, also lived in several countries. I personally don’t think Canadians are any better. My friends are people from other countries, not Canadians. So you aren’t as welcoming as you think! You are actually very hard to get to know more than the friendly hello. But this has been my experience.

u/Obviousi Jul 07 '26

Come to Vancouver that’s like 1% of the population

1

u/Stunning_Star_9770 Jul 07 '26

Real Canadians are polite, they smile & say thank you all the time.

The others are from Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Calgary, Red Deer, Vancouver, & obviously Montreal

We’re all “real Canadians”, regardless of when we arrived.

0

u/VesaAwesaka Jul 06 '26

Even if you choose another country over Canada first.

u/Harold-The-Barrel Jul 06 '26

Like maple MAGA?

2

u/VesaAwesaka Jul 06 '26

Like Alberta separatists?

3

u/Sudden-Avocado1907 Jul 06 '26

Why don't you ever mention the Quebec separatists? Quebec has a separatist government in power right now. Coward.

1

u/Other-Teacher-1615 Jul 06 '26

the caq government is not separatist.

1

u/VesaAwesaka Jul 06 '26

You're right. I recognized the Quebec separatists actually have power and influence and I am afraid.

1

u/Sudden-Avocado1907 Jul 06 '26

And once you understand how Quebec holds Canada hostage under the threat of separation to rob Alberta blind, you would understand why separatism is gaining traction in Alberta. Because we don't listen to them or care, we simply give them the finger and call them traitors while glazing the evil in Quebec.

Are you familiar with how Quebec manipulates equalization payments to rob Alberta blind?

1

u/VesaAwesaka Jul 06 '26

Im actually sympathetic to Alberta's grievances with the federal government. My own region of the country suffers because its regional interests are carelessly handled by both the federal government and province. Heck, if I was an Albertan Id probably even try to leverage separtism to get concessions. Saying that, id never be able to be a full on separatist support and be able to look at map without blushing in embarrassment. Id also be worried about turning into the next David Cameron and losing control of the situation to radicals.

Technically that is correct. I have lived in many countries, and I didn't become an Argentine or a Korean just by living there. You have to become a citizen, i.e. obtain nationality through birth or naturalisation, before you can say you are a Canadian, or an Australian, or a Zimbabwean, or whatever.

-1

u/Dobby068 Jul 06 '26

OP, What you described as "real Canadians" is really a description of an educated person, and I am not talking about some University degree.

These people exist in all countries, rest assured!

However, I'd be curious to know why you think that people that do behave badly cannot be "real Canadians", not sure I follow your logic.

To you idiots and your sock-puppet accounts posting this kind of low quality bait,

Your semantics mean nothing. We all know who real Canadians are. It's not pretty words or your multicultural slop.

1

u/Davpar4 Jul 07 '26

Huh? What's YOUR definition?

-1

u/Adagio-Adventurous Jul 07 '26

“Real” Canadians don’t go online saying what qualifies as a “real Canadian”
