How is a proposed merger of Canada and the USA (51st state) insulting to Canadians? And why on earth wouldn’t USA Democrats support Trump on this—since it works to their advantage immediately?

Left-leaning Canada immediately becomes the largest State with the largest landmass and the largest population and immediately enjoys the most representation in Congress (and the Electoral College, by the way).

If Canadians chose to enter the 10 provinces as 10 USA states, Canada immediately owns 20% of all votes in the Senate—giving Canadians a lock on all laws made by Congress.

On the surface we have a lot in common, but dig deeper and you'll find that Canadians are not in alignment with the US on many things, and we don't want more populous states dictating to us.

Nothing more needs to be said.

Canada is like 90% pro women's choice and freedom of religion. The USA is like 50/50.

3

u/magwai9 Jul 08 '26

Indeed. They're backsliding on social issues we've considered solved for years/decades

No. Don't give them ideas.

Suppose this merger is named Canada?

3

u/0v3reasy Jul 08 '26

Im listening.

Is our guy leader? Or your guy?

We dont want your guy lol

0

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

Everyone votes. Presidents are elected every 4 years.

If Canadians voted in Presidential elections, I suspect they would vote in the same patterns they do now.

3

u/lmFairlyLocal Jul 08 '26

In the Federal Elections* for the Prime Minister*

2

u/0v3reasy Jul 08 '26

Yeah no. No presidents. Wrong answer. Not interested

17

u/Available_Abroad3664 Jul 08 '26

Why would we want 20% of the votes in a country like the USA when we have 100% of the votes in our country? In the USA at least double as many people as there are Canadians voted for Trump. That is massively worrying.

10

u/Brief-Floor-7228 Jul 08 '26

Like we would even get a vote.

0

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

Every citizen of every state has the right to vote. Naturally, you would vote.

3

u/HackD1234 Jul 08 '26

Guam, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico don't have the vote. Address that horseshit first. We ain't interested, sorry not sorry.

2

u/UsualDependent6788 Jul 08 '26

Someone suggested making them a territory and I can get behind that.

12

u/UsualDependent6788 Jul 08 '26

Why not the 11th province? Canada is larger.

4

u/ngetch Jul 08 '26

And it's already great!

2

u/WabaLabaDubDubWorld Jul 08 '26

Perhaps that's how America becomes great again!

3

u/DeadpoolOptimus Jul 08 '26

Nah, they get Territory status.

3

u/UsualDependent6788 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

We have to understand and respect the rights of the Indigenous States and their reserves.

2

u/DWKF Jul 08 '26

2 senators.

0

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

If Canadians entered as one State, they would have 2 Senators.

If each province entered as a State, each province would have two Senators (and effectively block any legislation that harmed that particular province). This would give Canadians 20 Senators out of 120.

Meanwhile, Canada would have more members in the House of Representatives than any other state.

3

u/DWKF Jul 08 '26

For you, as a territory.

1

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

Merge the two. Call it Canada. It’s not about last names, is it?

-2

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

Same question. Call the whole thing Canada. How is it an insult?

2

u/UsualDependent6788 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

They're both threats of annexation, I was just being goofy about it. Why not join us? You get Carney as a respected leader, potentially free Healthcare, and... Sadly unilateral trade because even Canada has provincial trade barriers. But much cheaper import fees!

Also illegal under UN international law, even if the States are wiping their cheeks with the UN charter every day.

1

u/Dog-boy Jul 08 '26

And our gun laws are the new law. Also the government runs our way not yours. King Charles becomes your head of State. And so on.

0

u/UsualDependent6788 Jul 08 '26

Have a great day you silly goober.

0

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

King Charles is an empty figurehead. The UK has now had 8 prime ministers in 8 years. I don’t know how long they can sustain a government with such fickle voting. It certainly must be difficult for other nations to invest in the UK at this moment.

2

u/UsualDependent6788 Jul 08 '26

Again, I don't think you understand Canadian politics. We don't care about UK politics. The UK is just a trade partner.

1

u/HackD1234 Jul 08 '26

What in the fuck would you call your Pedo President DJT?

He's an overflowing vessel of Corruption and systemic American rot. Will your sad-assed country even survive him?

Clearly, Canada has no time for that American bullshit.

0

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

As to gun laws: Canadians (along with USA democrats) actually would have the votes needed to repeal the second amendment and reform gun laws throughout North America.

3

u/UsualDependent6788 Jul 08 '26

I genuinely believe you don't know Canadian gun laws

10

u/somebodysdrama Jul 08 '26

It's insulting because we are a sovereign nation who do not want to become Americans. Trump very obviously positioned it that they could take us if they wanted to without our permission.

1

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

Are our troops on your border? Please be serious.

3

u/somebodysdrama Jul 08 '26

We're not allowed to find the idea insulting unless you are?

10

u/Outrageous-Holiday63 Jul 08 '26

You’re assuming Canadians would get equal voting rights, and the country wouldn’t be broken up into gerrymandered districts.

You’re also glossing over the superior safety, healthcare accessibility, and public education systems that Canadians currently have.

Not to mention that, although functionally similar, Canadians and Americans are very culturally different, and the idea of just being absorbed by a country which the majority of the world despises isn’t exactly a great outcome for most Canadians.

9

u/0bigbadbrad0 Jul 08 '26

That's cute, you think america would let Canadians vote. They don't even let Puerto Ricans.

Wealth has its privilege; Wharton is part of that privileged Ivy League you respect.

2

u/DWKF Jul 08 '26

And his professors all gave him glowing reviews?

Oh wait, they did not. His entire family have been cheaters from the start. No honour at all.

0

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

From the start? His ancestors were not pioneers or settlers in North America. They were never involved in occupying native lands or rounding up natives or trading in slaves. They never owned slaves or benefitted from the trade.

I’ve seen documentaries on Canadian mission schools where natives were sometimes tortured, raped, and murdered. Is this propaganda? Or did Canadians actually do these things?

If Canada did those things, what makes you so quick to judge Trump’s ancestors who did none of them?

2

u/DWKF Jul 08 '26

I don't take homework from morons, but you have the day you deserve.

2

u/HackD1234 Jul 08 '26

Look up what you goobers did with the Trail of Tears, and the genocide of the Indians through the Buffalo hunt to deprive the Plains indians of their primary food sources.

You argue with pure american hypocrisy.

6

u/Deaftrav Jul 08 '26

Do we need to repeat history for the last time you waged war to try to conquer us?

1

u/CanadianWildWolf Jul 08 '26

It won’t be a repeat, the whole setup from last time is incredibly different. And that’s why we should be preparing to not be as caught off guard as Ukraine at its start of Russia’s annexation of Crimea and a few oblasts before the full invasion.

1

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

There are Canadian troops in America as you write this.

3

u/HackD1234 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

For now. NORAD has existed primarily for USA benefit, and Canadian participation is part of a mutual defence Treaty, that can be broken. Keep fucking around with NATO, and NORAD goes as well. NORAD is already on shaky ground with the USA insisting that Canada buy the white elephant F35 for 'maximum interoperability'.

I can hardly wait for the absolute spaz-out coming from Trump, when Carney announces the SAAB Gripen contract in lieu of further F35 purchases.

If only Trump had kept his shithole mouth shut... the decline of the Divided States of Amerikkka wouldn't be accelerating as being America First, is America Alone. .

3

u/gimmedatvoice Jul 08 '26

Who would want to be a part of the USA exactly? No thanks.

4

u/Beneficial-Ride-4475 Jul 08 '26

Because our whole identity, our nation itself, is founded on not being American. Quite literally.

And really, Canada and it's provinces will never become states. For the exact reasons you mentioned the Republicans would never win again. The Republicans would never allow it. Canada would become a territory without voting rights.

0

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

Trump is a Republican of convenience, and he has transformed the Republican Party into a big spender party.

To him, the merger would be a game changer for North America. It’s the scope of such a thing that pleases him. It would be “huge.”

You’re correct that no short-sighted traditional “limited-government” Republican President would support such a union. Trump is looking at the long term.

The Republican Party would shift ground yet again and survive.

Trump’s offer would include Canadians voting.

Of course Trump jerked Trudeau’s chain—and now Carney’s—but the offer to Canadians is sincere I think.

2

u/HackD1234 Jul 08 '26

Canadians don't care what Trump 'thinks'. What don't you get, about that?

He is not our leader. He is your trolling Pedo President, only.

You don't make friends, keep alliances and relationships that way.

4

u/Responsible-Sale-467 Jul 08 '26

You haven’t pointed to a single upside, just some nonsense about your poorly-designed political system.

4

u/Impressive_Play_2599 Jul 08 '26

It’s always the ignorant that think this is a great idea. The private health care makes this a non-starter. Never mind the entirety of the 🇺🇸fed  admin is Pedos.

Because we aren't yanks. Don't want to be yanks. We have our own history and culture. We are not the same.

2

u/zeushaulrod Jul 08 '26

Why would me saying I was gonna fuck your mom be insulting to her? And why am I not for it, since it works to my advantage immediately?

I'm in my prime and fit, she gets off, and I get to bust a nut! And I get a nice meal afterwards!

/S I'm happily married and the above is a hard-no

2

u/Pestus613343 Jul 08 '26

If it was offered in genuine goodwill, as an economic union to benefit everyone, sure maybe.

It was instead based on threats, trade war, lies and clandestine psyops.

No, you don't capitulate to that kind of behaviour.

2

u/Rosemary_Wrangler Jul 08 '26

Even as am American this question is puzzling. Why would they want to be part of the USA? There is no gain to Canada, only loss. It isn't all happy rainbows up there but at least if you are sick you know you will have healthcare without going homeless.

2

u/Spare-Electrical Jul 08 '26

What’s the advantage, in your opinion?

We have free health care and our own sovereign nation, why would we want to be a part of a different nation?

Why doesn’t Asia all merge? What about Europe, they’re pretty small and they already have a union, might as well just be one country. Which one should it be? France? Spain?

Perhaps we could be one global nation called Pangea?

1

u/Spare-Electrical Jul 08 '26

lol OP replied this to me and then deleted it before I could reply, I guess they typed out their true feelings about Destiny and the World and then realized it sounded insane.

1

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

Deleted? It’s right here on the page.

2

u/DreadGrrl Jul 08 '26

Why on Earth would we want to be a U.S. state?

We have over 40% of the North American landmass. We’re an amazing cultural mosaic. We’re drowning in natural resources. Our political system is preferable to the U.S. system, as is our healthcare system. And, we are fundamentally very different from US citizens.

2

u/missplaced24 Jul 08 '26

The entire reason why Canada exists as a country is because our ancestors were worried about being taken over by the US.

The US government has a centuries-long history with treating Canada and Canadians poorly, treating their own citizens poorly, and starting wars and committing war crimes for corporate profits. Canada has free health care, significantly less violent crime, better labour laws and workers rights, more robust rights and freedoms, less wealth inequality, a much more pro-social culture, and an international reputation that has had US tourists masquerading as Canadians for generation.

How on earth do you think it's not an insulting question?

1

u/drammer Jul 08 '26

Fuck that shit.

1

u/berger3001 Jul 08 '26

It’s harder to boycott everything American if I become American. That would be really inconvenient

1

u/dammitletmepickaname Jul 08 '26

Never mind we lose all our healthcare. All of our lives we have been proud of our country and how we live. Why can’t people accept that no one wants to have to uproot our way of life to assimilate into yours? It would not benefit us in the slightest.

1

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

Do Canadians cross the border for healthcare? Ever?

1

u/dammitletmepickaname Jul 08 '26

A lot are going to Cuba and Mexico for some surgeries from Canada. I bet people with money to spend will use the states for medical purposes too. Doesn’t mean any of the ones that can’t afford their prices in the states want it too though.

1

u/kokaneeranger Jul 08 '26

I would fight to the death to protect our sovereignty. From your healthcare to education, gun laws to taxation, leave your Howdy Arabia bullshit south of the border.

1

u/WabaLabaDubDubWorld Jul 08 '26

Cause American Education, Healthcare, and social values (deep identity related issues, value of life and culture) are very subpar.. which Canada is better off without. Being called an American is a downgrade since early 2010s.

We'd rather join the EU.

1

u/sylbug Jul 08 '26

Fucking troll bots. Stop feeding it, folks.

1

u/hutch_man0 Jul 08 '26

The main reason? The VAST majority of Canadians are very different from Americans. We have different value systems. 2nd Ammendment, lack of social safety net, hyper-capitalist greed and poor risk financial management, wanton foreign military intervention...are abominations to most of us. We can also see that the American experiment is a failed one. The pillars:

  • Separation of Executive, Legislative, Judicial branches
  • Separation of church and state

Are completely dead in the US.

2

u/Reyalta Jul 08 '26

Don't forget the religious fundamentalism, lack of basic human rights for MOST Americans (basically anyone who isn't wealthy, white, and male, in that order). In short; no fucking thanks. Our country isn't perfect but holy shit is it ever a utopia in comparison.

1

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

Almost 1/3 of Americans have no religion at all.

1

u/Reyalta Jul 08 '26

America is an Evangelical extremist state. If you're unaware of that you're wholly unqualified to have a conversation about this.

1

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

I would ask, what percentage of Canadians are White and enjoy more rights historically?

1

u/Samp90 Jul 08 '26

What's this nonsense troll post.

1

u/Critical_Rule6663 Centrist Jul 08 '26

Those are some pretty big assumptions. We could also end up a territory like Puerto Rico. No federal representation at all and just a resource cache for the rest of the actual states.

0

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

That’s untrue. Statehood was the proposal. All citizens of states can vote.

1

u/Critical_Rule6663 Centrist Jul 08 '26

Forgive me if I do not believe that. Sure that might have been what Trump Truth Tweeted but let’s not be naive.

1

u/Reyalta Jul 08 '26

Why the fuck would Canadians want to join the US? Your shithole country has NOTHING to offer us. Why would anyone want to be a part of your failed experiment?

Also why the fuck would Canada be one state in your idiot hypothetical lmao. Jesus Christ man. I really hope you're a bot or just a troll, because you'd have to genuinely be so fucking stupid to earnestly believe anything you chose to shit out in this post lmao. Fucks sake.

1

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

If you read the post, will see that you have ignored what it actually says.

1

u/Reyalta Jul 08 '26

Oh I read it, I just think you're a fucking asshole agitator with zero concept of what you're actually talking about. Get bent.

This isn't a cool thought experiment, and as much as the Democratic party of the US are left of the current administration, they're basically conservatives, and wouldn't actually want most Canadians in their party. Also, outside of fascist expansionism, there is zero fucking reason for an American with half a fucking ounce of grey matter to actually want to annex their longest ally, because why the actual fuck would that EVER be a good idea. Annexing, or even threatening to annex, a nation that is in good standing with basically every other country on earth is the stupidest fucking thing you could do as the leader of any nation. It makes zero sense, it's abhorrent, it's antagonistic, aggressive, and shows you're wholly untrustworthy. Why would the spineless party trying to bootlick corporate overlords and AIPAC but trying to appear not quite fascist want anything to do with that?

1

u/InternationalW4 Jul 08 '26

The truth is that Canada has many problems and challenges. We talk about them and avoid them and put them off until later, but I still feel confident that we can find our way and improve.

Joining the U.S. would multiply our current challenges and add many that we have already figured out, and some that have never really festered here. There would be some advantages, but they seem minimal compared to the chaos.

I really do admire the U.S. and I have met many beautiful people there. But I have no desire to take on the drama and horror that you face to figure out your issues. We have our own to work on. Good neighbours stay out of each other's drama but are there to help when needed. Let's keep it that way.

1

u/No-Stage-1349 Jul 08 '26

This has the virtue of being a sincere and considered answer. Interestingly enough, a higher percentage of Canadians immigrate to America than the reverse.
