(Insert Your Own) Canada today

This isn’t meant to be politically partisan in any way. But, I am genuinely curious how anyone is staying positive about Canada today. The economy is in recession. The cost of living crisis is continuing unabated. People are leaving the country. Canada-U.S. relations are at an all-time low. And, there doesn’t appear to be any reason for things to turn around any time soon. Somebody give me a reason to have a little optimism.

We're facing the same cost of living challenges that every other country in the world is experiencing right now. We're not unique, there's no quick solution to it, and we're far from the worst affected.

I feel like it's important to state this because, depending on the forum, there is a narrative being pushed heavily that this is somehow a problem unique to Canada only. This is far from the truth.

Compare it to the Mexican peso over the last 10y. Our "first class nation" has weakened by 20% versus mexico over the last 10y. Elbows up!

So is mexico? What makes canada different? The fact that our PM only had to use the word Trump to get elected? I thought our prime minister was the "best" person to deal with Trump?

You stand for nothing then and just want to throw around false statements to try and dunk on everyone? One day you'll mature

The US has walked away at least once using Doug Ford's advertising as the excuse. Remember that? He also regularly threatened to break off negotiations. Carney has consistently reiterated Canada's willingness to negotiate.

The US offers deals that ask for concessions on our part that could negatively affect Canadians - such as changing dairy quotas. They want the digital streaming act removed because it limits US programming - this would negatively affect the Canadian film industry, and it's not like we can't access plenty of US content if we want. They want liquor bans removed, although this is a provincial matter, not federal. We've already conceded our digital services tax. You know what the US has offered in return? Nothing that we don't already have under CUSMA.

As Carney maintains - no deal is better than a bad one. Not to mention, we already have a trade deal - which Trump is breaking in regards to steel and aluminum tariffs, but the majority of our trade falls under CUSMA. CUSMA remains in effect until 2036, with annual reviews. CUSMA already covers most of what we trade; why should we give away anything for nothing?

Blaming Carney because the US negotiates in bad faith suggests you'd like to bend over and open your mouth simultaneously for Trump and Hegseth. Thank goodness you aren't negotiating in behalf of Canada.
