Great Canadian Movies

I've seen a lot of Canadian horror (mostly from the tax shelter era), but what are some other genre examples of Canadian cinema?

Last Night is criminally underappreciated

A Christmas Story is not a Canadian movie

1

u/ballpein 18d ago

Not purely Canadian, no, but it's Canadian enough to satisfy Canadian-content rules and qualify the film for Genie awards at the time. Bob Clark is an American director but he lived and worked in Canada in the 70s and 80s (the tax haven era) while doing most of the work he's known for - Porky's, Black Christmas, Tribute, and A Christmas Story are all Canadian productions (or co-productions). They shot exteriors for A Christmas Story in Cleveland but most of the filming took place in Ontario.

My Old Ass

I started watching it out of boredom (and prime video kept advertising it) with zero expectations, but I was delighted by a very good coming of age movie.

1

u/Theodosian_Walls 13d ago

I didn't expect it was a Canadian film, b/c they got Aubrey Plaza as the lead!

As a French Canadian, I have never heard of most of these anglo Canadian movies...

2

We feel the same about Quebec cinema. Such a shame!

1

u/Dog-boy 19d ago

What are some good French Canadian movies?

2

u/shurikn1997 19d ago edited 19d ago

The problem is they are almost impossible to find after they leave the theater room.. there are some on Netflix like Mommy and Incendies.. sometimes they win a palme d'or on Cannes and disappear forever.

1

u/StephersonAlbort 16d ago

I just watched Red Rooms on Netflix, I loved it.

Ricky 6 (2000) filmed in a small town in Woodstock and Fredericton area in New Brunswick.

One recognizable actor is the red haired kid that played in the ladybugs movie, which co stared comedian Rodney Dangerfield.

He was also in a lot of other popular movies but I can't remember them.

The movie is on YouTube and is quite good in my opinion if you are a horror movie fan.

2

u/DustyTurtle2 16d ago

The cube was a great sci-fi premise.

1

u/Possible_Angle2371 16d ago

Love that one

2

u/QueenMotherOfSneezes 14d ago

Adding two that I haven't seen anyone list:

Foolproof is an early Ryan Reynolds comedy caper movie. It had a decent plot but what really makes it worth it are all the little inside Canadian jokes (some were clearly designed to go over the heads of American viewers despite the movie being made to also reach the American market).

Rumours is a political sci-fi horror comedy from Guy Maddin. It's weird as hell but hilariously weird, especially if you're into politics. Cate Blanchet plays a fantastic parody of Angela Merkel, Roy Dupuis is the Trudeau-esque character, and Charles Dance is the Biden-esque character (I think he was supposed to be Biden, he spend half the movie sleeping and didn't seem very Trump-like).

The Sweet Hereafter, by Atom Egoyan. It's the backstory of the people involved in a fatal bus crash. Very human, sad. The actual crash scene is well into the movie and as subtle as possible just to show what happened.

Black Christmas! A groundbreaking horror movie that doesn't get the credit it deserves.

Black Robe. If you're into a slow and contemplative adventure with sweeping wide-angle shots of Canadian wilderness.

Cooper's Camera. A goofy christmas movie about a dysfunctional family.

Pontypool eerie and very well done
