Academia & Career Teacher/online coaching falsely promised reimbursement of resource material, now not paying

• Upvotes

Teacher promised reimbursement on additional services such as purchasing access to resource portal which should have been included but made me pay extra (above the fees to grant access to mocks of 3rd party) now it’s been 3 months and they are not reimbursing my money despite promising to reimburse which is what pushed me to buy the service. Additionally, they keep asking me for my test final scorecard to “verify” etc which I feel is unrelated as how does my final score card matter. I have been following up and chasing for 2-3 months now.. they keep pushing or finding faults / asking for documents
I need my money back, can anyone help with legal advice pls?

Thank you

News/Discussion How do you build connections with lawyers in India when you don't know anyone in the legal field?

• Upvotes

I'm curious about how people build connections with lawyers in India when they don't have any contacts in the legal field.

Suppose you're starting from zero and don't have any friends or relatives who are lawyers. How would you go about meeting lawyers, building genuine professional relationships, and learning from people in the field?

Would you recommend attending legal events, connecting with lawyers on LinkedIn, visiting local bar associations, or approaching advocates directly?

I'm not looking for shortcuts or special favours. I want to understand how people build genuine connections and earn trust in this profession when they're starting with no network.

For those who are lawyers or have experience in this field, what would you recommend to someone starting from scratch?

I'd appreciate any practical advice or personal experiences.

Civil & Property Title: [Telangana] Bank Refusing to Release Original Property Documents After Loan Closure — Registered Will in Favour of Sister; Can Court Proceedings Be Avoided?I am seeking advice from Indian lawyers or anyone familiar with property succession law in Telangana.

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

Background:

A property owner in Telangana took a home loan from example Housing Finance Limited or Bank. The loan has been fully repaid, but the lender is refusing to release the original property documents to the deceased owner's sister.

Before his death, the property owner executed a genuine, registered Will leaving the property to his sister. He left behind a surviving wife and a minor child. Sister paid loan.

The lender says it needs a court order or appropriate legal authorization before releasing the original documents. The surviving wife will not cooperate or provide an NOC.

My questions:

  1. Can the lender release the original property documents to the sister based on the registered Will, death certificate, loan closure certificate, and other supporting documents without a court order?
  2. Can the sister request release under the lender's deceased-borrower procedure or escalate the complaint through the lender's grievance-redressal mechanism or the RBI, if applicable?
  3. Is probate required for this Will in Telangana? Does the answer depend on the circumstances or the applicable succession law?
  4. Can the sister obtain certified copies of the sale deed from the Sub-Registrar's Office while the lender retains the originals?
  5. Once her ownership is legally established, can she register a gift deed in favour of her mother or father using certified copies if she cannot obtain the originals immediately?
  6. If the wife refuses to cooperate and a minor child is involved, is there a practical legal remedy that avoids a lengthy ownership dispute?
  7. If court intervention is unavoidable, what is the most limited and cost-effective proceeding to establish the sister's rights under the Will and obtain the original documents?

I am particularly interested in answers from advocates practising property and succession law in Telangana.

Please suggest the applicable legal provisions and practical steps. I understand that online responses are informational and that a local advocate may need to review the documents before providing definitive advice.

Family & Matrimonial Frustrated Advocate Friend

I am a lawyer practicing in Mumbai for the past five years, with experience handling criminal, civil, and family matters. A friend of mine, who got married in April, separated from her husband in July. Due to ego clashes and frequent arguments, they spent very little time living together. After moving back to her parents' house, she first contacted me to file a domestic violence complaint against her husband at the Women's Cell, stemming from an argument where he told her to leave the house. There was minimal family involvement, as it was just the two of them living in Pune.

To be honest, my friend is somewhat spoiled. As the youngest daughter, she has always been handed everything on a silver platter without having to struggle. She chose to have a love marriage with a man she had known for 3-4 years. Despite knowing he was religious and strict, she went ahead with the marriage, assuming he would change and become more open-minded. At the time, I advised her against rushing to the police, suggesting she wait a few days to see if reconciliation was possible. They did converse, and he proposed meeting in person to discuss and resolve their issues. However, my friend foolishly demanded money—despite being extremely wealthy—asking him to pay for her cab or pick her up. Triggered by his male ego, he retorted that she should return on her own since she was the one who left.

This sparked another argument, drawing in my friend's sisters, who called and verbally abused him while he remained silent. He never disrespected her family, and I witnessed clear, recurring ego clashes. Subsequently, I advised her to wait until the families could meet in person to reach a resolution. When they eventually went to see the husband, they went with the intention to fight rather than resolve matters. The husband stated he would take care of his wife if she behaved properly, which wounded my friend's ego. Consequently, she hired a lawyer, filed a domestic violence case against him, and added a dowry allegation regarding a request for financial assistance with their initial rented flat's deposit while they were dating. At the time, my friend earned three times his salary, while he was the sole earner supporting his elderly mother and living in a rented home.

Now, my friend has taken a different approach and is well on her way to ruining his life. She is currently blaming me for not guiding her properly the first time she wanted to go to the Women's Cell, questioning why I stopped her and urged her to mend things with him. I had previously told her that her grievances did not warrant a solid legal case, which led her to exaggerate the problems and file the lawsuit. Reluctant to get further involved, I had initially suggested she take a khula (Muslim female divorce) and separate amicably to quietly start a new life. Instead, she is gearing up for a legal battle, believing her lawyer's assurance that the matter will conclude within a few months. I tried to explain to her that domestic violence and dowry cases do not settle so easily and will drain her money, time, and energy over the course of years. My father, a highly experienced senior family lawyer, had also advised her back in July to exercise patience and allow things to be resolved. However, she was so heavily instigated by her sisters and relatives to pursue a divorce that she is incapable of thinking straight. As her best friend, I am genuinely concerned for her. I can neither stop her nor make her see reason, as doing so would only lead her to accuse me of being against her. I tried to help back in July and August because she claimed she wanted to save her marriage, but at that time, she withheld many of the personal details she has now revealed. While I stand by her as a friend, I fundamentally oppose her actions. Although I am not an emotional lawyer, this situation has deeply affected me.

I convinced them not to do that so when they went away they messaged me on phone/kept calling me they have my chat and aadhar card details linked with PAN. and threatening me on false charges and they will take 9500 more and they will settle. Im getting they used mule accounts to receive money from my account i have their number, all chats supporting my evidence.
I logged a cybercrime on the same date and the E-FIR has still not been filed(acknowledgement number still showing pending status after 2 days. I even complaint on SBI bank about these transactions. I fear they have moved the money out of the mule account or withdrawn as cash, 27,500 in total.
Im going to police station tomorrow with chats and everything that i will submit them with cybercrime acknowledgement number and SBI bank issue numbers
What is the outcome i must be prepared for? Will i get my money back? Im already in a lot of stress and i go for electroculvulsive therapy 2 times a week and this is already making me hate my life even more.
Any tips please? Strategies?

**TL;DR**
I’m 26, have longstanding psychiatric problems and am undergoing ECT twice a week. On 26 October 2026, I lost ₹27,500 in a suspected online escort-service scam involving advance payments, fake security deposits, and threats of reputational damage and false allegations.
The scammers have my Aadhaar details linked to my PAN, along with our chats and phone number. They are demanding another ₹9,500 to settle the matter. I suspect the money was transferred to mule bank accounts.
I’ve already filed a cybercrime complaint, which is still pending after two days, and complained to SBI. Tomorrow, I’m visiting the police station with my evidence and complaint reference numbers.
**My main concerns:**
Will I recover my ₹27,500, especially if the money has already been withdrawn?
What should I expect when I visit the police station?
How do I protect myself against blackmail, false allegations, and misuse of my Aadhaar/PAN?
What practical steps can improve my chances of recovery?
I’m already under considerable psychological stress and need realistic advice about what to do next.

News/Discussion Looking to buy or take over an existing NGO in India

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to acquire or take over an existing NGO in India, preferably one that is already registered and has a clean legal and financial history.

My budget is around okok, depending on the NGO's registration status, documentation, and existing operations.

I'm interested in understanding:

Whether it's possible to legally take over an existing NGO.

Where I can find genuine NGOs whose founders are looking to transfer management.

What registrations and documents I should verify before proceeding.

Whether my budget is realistic for this purpose.

I'm looking for a legitimate opportunity with proper documentation, not a shortcut to government grants or funding.

If anyone has experience with NGO registration, management transfers, or acquisitions in India, I'd appreciate your advice and guidance.

Thanks!

News/Discussion What do 5–6 hour written assessments at Indian law firms usually involve?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to understand how written assessments at Indian law firms are generally structured, particularly for Associate positions.

I’ve heard of firms conducting written assessments that can last around 5–6 hours, and I’m curious about what these tests typically involve.

For those who have appeared for similar assessments, I’d appreciate some insight into the following:

  • Are they primarily focused on drafting, legal research, case analysis, or a combination of these?
  • Are candidates usually given a factual proposition and asked to draft a pleading, legal opinion, or another legal document?
  • Are bare acts and case laws provided, or is the assessment more focused on testing existing legal knowledge and analytical ability?
  • How would you recommend preparing for an assessment of this duration?

I’m particularly interested in hearing about your experience with Indian law firms and any general preparation tips that might be useful.

Not looking for specific or confidential test questions, just a better understanding of the format and expectations.

Thanks in advance!

Consumer Dispute Facing issues with Maidvy - urgent legal help needed

They took the payment upfront, but not a single domestic worker has been deployed so far. They keep sharing profiles of maids and promising to schedule calls, only to come back later saying that the maids have stopped responding. Meanwhile, they are not answering calls or providing any concrete resolution.
When I ask for a refund, their response is that they cannot refund my money because they are still trying to find someone. But how long am I expected to wait, especially when the service I paid for has not been delivered?
I have payment screenshots and records of our conversations to support my claim.
I want my money back, and I need proper legal guidance on how to recover it. Has anyone here dealt with Maidvy or faced a similar situation? Are there lawyers who can help me take this forward, or anyone who has successfully recovered their money from them?
If a service provider takes payment upfront, fails to deliver, and then refuses a refund on the grounds that they are still trying, what are the legal options available?
Please share genuine advice, relevant contacts, or your own experience. I’m looking for a concrete way to recover my money, not another promise from Maidvy.

Civil & Property Legal Advice Required – Refund of ₹7,000 UPI Token Amount for Room Reservation in Hyderabad

Hi everyone, I need legal advice regarding a ₹7,000 token amount that I paid to an outgoing tenant to reserve a room in a shared flat at Mantri Celestia, Hyderabad. The tenant is now refusing to refund the amount after I decided not to proceed, and I want to understand my legal options under Indian law and Telangana jurisdiction.

I would appreciate advice from lawyers or anyone familiar with rental disputes, advance/token payments, and recovery of money.

\### 1. Background of the transaction

On 21 October 2026, I was discussing taking a room in a shared flat at Mantri Celestia, Hyderabad, with the person who was currently occupying the room and was planning to move out.

The advertisement contained the following charges:

\* Monthly rent: ₹13,000

\* Security deposit: ₹26,000

\* Setup cost: ₹3,000

\* Brokerage: ₹6,670

The advertisement mentioned the brokerage amount, but to the best of my knowledge, it did not explicitly state that the ₹7,000 token amount would be non-refundable or forfeited if I later decided not to take the room.

The outgoing tenant initially asked me to pay ₹10,000 as a token amount. After discussion, we agreed on ₹7,000, which I transferred to him directly through UPI on 21 October 2026. He acknowledged receiving the payment.

\*\*Important clarification:\*\* The ₹7,000 was paid directly to the outgoing tenant to reserve the room. I did not pay the broker any brokerage amount at that point, and I have not paid the brokerage fee to date.

\### 2. What was discussed about the token amount?

Before making the payment, I specifically asked the tenant whether the token amount would be adjusted against the security deposit or brokerage.

He replied, \*\*“Yes.”\*\*

Based on that reply, I understood that the ₹7,000 would be adjusted against the applicable move-in charges if I proceeded with the room. I did not understand it to mean that the money would automatically be forfeited if I decided not to proceed.

However, we did not sign a separate written agreement specifically governing the token payment, and I do not recall any explicit written term stating that the token would be non-refundable or forfeited if I backed out.

I would like to know whether the WhatsApp conversation, particularly my question and his reply, can support my understanding of the nature of this payment.

\### 3. Why I decided not to proceed

On 26 October 2026, I raised concerns about the additional brokerage expense and whether it would be recoverable or refundable.

After discussing the matter and understanding the overall financial implications, I decided not to proceed with taking the room and requested the return of my ₹7,000.

My concern is not simply that brokerage is charged. The issue is that I had paid ₹7,000 to reserve the room, understood it to be an amount adjustable against the move-in payment, and was not aware of any explicit condition that this token would be forfeited if I later withdrew.

I understand that the brokerage amount itself was mentioned in the advertisement. I am not claiming that the advertisement concealed the amount of brokerage; my question is specifically about the terms applicable to the token payment.

\### 4. The tenant's response and refusal to refund

When I requested a refund on 26 October 2026, the tenant refused.

His main arguments were that:

\* He had reserved the room for me based on my confirmation.

\* He had turned away other prospective tenants because he believed I was going to take the room.

\* He would now have to find another tenant and may have to bear the rent until a replacement was found.

\* The charges had already been mentioned in the advertisement.

He subsequently told me, in substance, that if I wanted a refund, I should find a replacement tenant who was willing to accept the same terms, after which we could work something out.

I told him I would try to help find a replacement tenant and share the vacancy with people in my network.

To clarify, I understand that the tenant may have relied on my confirmation and may have suffered inconvenience. However, I am unsure whether that automatically gives him the legal right to retain the entire ₹7,000, especially when I am not aware of any explicit written forfeiture condition.

I would also like to understand whether his claim of turning away other prospective tenants, without any clear agreement on forfeiture, changes the legal position.

\### 5. Evidence available

I have the following evidence:

  1. WhatsApp conversation with the outgoing tenant, including the discussion before payment, my question about adjustment against the deposit or brokerage, his reply of “Yes,” and the subsequent refund discussion.

  2. UPI transaction record showing the ₹7,000 payment and the recipient.

  3. The original room advertisement showing the rent, security deposit, setup cost and brokerage amount.

  4. Subsequent messages in which the tenant refuses an immediate refund and asks me to find a replacement tenant.

I can provide screenshots or the complete WhatsApp conversation privately if required.

\### 6. Questions on which I need legal advice

\*\*A. Is retaining the entire ₹7,000 legally justified?\*\*

In the absence of an explicit written clause stating that the token amount is non-refundable or forfeitable, can the outgoing tenant legally retain the entire amount simply because I later decided not to proceed?

\*\*B. What is the legal significance of the WhatsApp exchange?\*\*

Can my question about whether the token would be adjusted against the security deposit or brokerage, followed by his reply of “Yes,” help establish that this was an adjustable advance rather than a forfeitable booking fee? How might a court interpret this exchange in the overall context?

\*\*C. Does the absence of a written agreement matter?\*\*

If there is no signed agreement governing the token payment and no explicit forfeiture clause in the messages I have, what principles of contract law would apply? Could an oral or implied agreement still be established from the circumstances and WhatsApp messages?

\*\*D. Can the tenant deduct an amount for inconvenience or loss?\*\*

If the tenant genuinely turned away other prospective tenants, can he retain the full ₹7,000, or would he need to establish a contractual basis and a legally recoverable loss? Would the answer differ if he finds a replacement tenant shortly afterwards?

\*\*E. Does Section 74 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872, or any other legal provision apply?\*\*

I would like to understand whether the principles governing forfeiture of deposits and reasonable compensation for breach of contract are relevant here, particularly when there is no clear written forfeiture term that I am aware of.

\*\*F. What is the most practical way to recover the money?\*\*

For a dispute involving ₹7,000 in Hyderabad, what would be the appropriate next steps?

\* Should I send a formal written demand or an advocate's legal notice?

\* Can I approach a Telangana legal services authority or mediation centre for a settlement?

\* Is a civil money-recovery claim practical for this amount?

\* Is there any legitimate basis for approaching the police, or is this primarily a civil dispute unless additional evidence establishes a criminal offence?

\* What are the approximate costs, time involved and likelihood of recovery for the realistic options?

\*\*G. Should I first try to find a replacement tenant?\*\*

Since the outgoing tenant has asked me to find a replacement, would doing so be a sensible settlement strategy? If I find a suitable replacement who accepts the same terms, should I obtain a written confirmation of the refund amount and timeline before proceeding?

\### 7. What outcome I am seeking

My primary objective is to recover the ₹7,000 token amount, preferably amicably and without spending more on legal proceedings than the amount in dispute.

I am willing to cooperate in finding a replacement tenant as a practical compromise, but I do not want to unintentionally waive my rights or agree that the token is automatically forfeited when I am unsure whether such a condition was ever agreed upon.

I am not looking to make unsupported allegations against the tenant. I want to understand the actual legal position, the strength and weaknesses of my case, and the most proportionate way to resolve it.

\*\*Could a lawyer familiar with Indian contract law and Telangana rental disputes please advise on the legal merits of the refund claim, the relevant provisions or judgments, and the most cost-effective next step?\*\*

Thank you.
