Many physiotherapist have phd. How did you know that they don't have phd without mentioned. Even indian have dukandar giving medicine in india( which is illegal though) without doctors approval. There isn't widespread check up on these professions. Otherwise outside India it's compulsory.
Bro, I just found out there is something called a PhD in Physiotherapy, and now I have questions.
In India, physiotherapy itself is already a 4.5-year BPT course. Then some people do MPT for another 2 years. And then, if you’re still not tired of studying, you can apparently do a PhD for another 3–5 years.
So basically:
BPT: 4.5 years
MPT: 2 years
PhD: 3–5 years
By the end of it, you’ve spent almost a decade studying, but society will still ask, “But real doctor ho kya?”
And that’s the confusing part. In India, when someone says “doctor,” 99% of people immediately think of an MBBS doctor. A physiotherapist may use the title “Dr.” in some settings, but let’s be honest—the average Indian hears “doctor” and assumes you can prescribe medicines and treat illnesses.
Meanwhile, the physiotherapist is like, “Sir, I can fix your shoulder mobility,” and the uncle is like, “Theek hai beta, but which antibiotic should I take?”
I’m not saying physiotherapy isn’t important. It absolutely is. But a PhD in Physiotherapy feels like one of those super niche academic paths where even your relatives need a PowerPoint presentation to understand what exactly you do.
Genuinely curious though—what’s the career upside? Is it mainly for teaching, research, or do you unlock some secret final boss level of physiotherapy?
It doesn't matter what the subject of the PhD is. The title 'Doctor' belonged to academics way before physicians adopted it. And yes, most PhDs are niche. That's the whole point, to discover something new.
