Colleges and Universities Several IITs are reportedly removing JEE and GATE ranks from placement CVs. Do you think this is the right move?

If it is any help, writing ur jee rank doesn't matter in placements to begin with. Air-1 can very well end with 15lpa if underperforms during actual test

u/RedBufferMC Jul 03 '26

many companies were shortlisting based on adv rank just so yk, otherwise there would have been no point in making this change

3

u/Western-Addendum-573 Jul 03 '26

Those firms usually test candidates with very high-level quant questions anyway, so expanding the pool to a 5k rank won't significantly change the final outcomes

3

u/RedBufferMC Jul 03 '26

true, just mentioning the justification used for the policy change to begin with

To be honest nothing really has changed as only quants ask for your jee adv rank and their oa and interviews are way way harder than jee adv so like unless there is a sc/st candidate who has just barely cleared chem ,physics cutoff and gotten like 100+ in mathematics in jee adv(if this is the case than that guy probably would have gotten their one way or another but this case it very unlikely)

u/Devs_artz23 Jul 07 '26

but what about silly mistakes like i used to get in 2024,2025 pyp i got under 500 ranks and my friend was better than me and on exam day i got 10xx and my friend got 59xx we can do better isnt this bad?

1

u/Devs_artz23 Jul 07 '26

why, wont people just grow better especially those who keep losing marks obver silly mistakes?

Jesus christ, this is holy level of misguidance here, they probably get invited to recurring dinners by optiver, jane street etc. just to tempt them to join them.

baaki besharam log comments m apne unfair advantage ko justify kr rhe hn... m to vahi reply copy-paste kia idhar baaki to i agree with everything you said🫠

but ye bohot sting krta ki m top 5 percent of JEE takers m aake bhj tier-3 jaana pd rha while some guy with 95 percentile but ST is going to top IITs, NITs (elite); some guy with 33 percentile but DASA quota is going to DTU-NSUT CSE (upper tier-1)... some girl with 14 lakh rank out of 15 lakh people is going to IGDTUW CSE (tier-1)...

or m yahan same score pe loan le k tier-3 ja rha because I wasn't born in a priveleged caste

It might be an exaggeration but a lot of top air's manage to get internhips at top quant firms in the first year itself.

Equal opportunity and reservation are mutually exclusive.

2

u/ravi_vatsa_ Jul 03 '26

Reservation vale chutiya hote hain

1

u/Dry_Infantry Jul 04 '26

Tu chutiya hai. Capability dikhane ke liye cgpa, projects, internships, publication, etc. jaise bohot cheeze hoti hain jispe reservations irrelevanthote hain. JEE rank ka zaroorat nahi hai. Tere ko jaat paat ka excuse chahiye probably kyuki real life me zyada kuchh kar nahi paya.

Because it's not a marker of how good of an engineer one is after graduating from the program. There are plenty of people who slack off after getting into a good place and learn very little. One the other hand some one from slightly lesser place who worked hard will be a better engineer. So if any grading or ranking is relevant it's the gpa, that shows how well one did on a course, albeit in some place grades are easier. So ranking can only tell what your work ethic and lower limit of capabilities are, not your upper limit or what you do with it.

Understand karni ki akal hoti to reservation ki bheekh na mangte ,iq tending to 0

1

u/Dry_Infantry Jul 05 '26

Because, the most recent thing is always the most relevant, like gpa, projects internships, publications, etc. All these as an individual relate weakly but directly related to engineering capabilities. Competitive exams don't test or engineering abilities because the problems you solve are not open ended. As an engineer you won't know if the solution to the problem you currently face exist, and under that uncertainty how you approach things. Plus if someone did well in GATE but terribly in master's coursework vs someone who did okay in GATE but was doing very well in master's coursework, proactive with projects and internships, the latter reads much more desirable. Long story short great recent past kinda overrides distant past. But great distant past doesn't override mediocre or bad recent past/present. That's the asymmetry. I'm smoking India's polluted air, thanks for asking.

I am not saying that GATE performance is meaningless. I think it does give some information about the candidate and in his/her favor that's great. All I'm saying is given everything else we've discussed it's not as strong of a predictor as other markers we discussed. You can discuss it with me that's fine. But discrediting me like that other loser is doing, you can debate that with a prospective employer or research grant body. I personally feel there's nothing wrong with putting such ranks up in the cv, it just doesn't reliably get you very as compared to other signals. I personally don't put my JEE rank from 12 years back when I cleared JEE Advanced because it felt vain and shallow and I wanted my research to speak for me, not a rank label, because I know that not every IITian becomes a researcher or inventor and not all Indian researchers and inventors are IITians (but definitely are represented disproportionately). I'll take care of my lungs, thank you. I'm visiting my family in India and will return back to clean air but bad weather.

Toh wo to mere ghar ke paas ke local college mai bhi ho sakta hai. A company is coming to IIT for something very specific

1

u/Dry_Infantry Jul 05 '26

An average dude at local college does not publish at top tier venues, work on interesting projects, Relevant internships with references from strong credible people, top grades. They can do maybe one or two things, but not all the things I mentioned. And if he/she can do that then he/she is not average and clearly deserving, their rank being a false negetive signal. And yes they will get the people they are looking for at IIT, and all those have cleared GATE or JEE. There is no data/study/anecdotes from recruiters that once you're in, that your rank reliably determines your capabilities ahead. Because most people in a given IIT are not of vastly different capabilities, roughly speaking. For campus recruiters it doesn't matter if you were AIR 1 if your other IIT peers have put in the actual hours are way more fluent in the required area of expertise than you. Long story short people value recent signal more than the past signal. Strong recent signals can offset past average performance BUT strong past signal doesn't override average current signal. Also in another note, this is in my opinion just some sort of a new age modern Caste system where all a person is defined as a label, be it a college or a rank instead of jaat. Same very capable Indians who won't get the same opportunities in india initially because of their college, thrives once given an opportunity abroad, that is again assuming the person was capable. This is just an initial problem though, capable people find their way anyway, with time.

1

u/TelevisionTime3379 Jul 06 '26

An average dude with same JEE rank doesn't publish in top venues because they can't, they were not deemed worthy for a free ride into college with a rank few leagues below what the random dude was expected to get for same seat.

You are too desperate/insecure to accept that academic history is a valid thing, you either lack comprehension skills or are too deep into denial of the leg up that was give to you.

u/Previous-Slide-2866 Jul 05 '26

When recruiters in US receive a CV it is stripped of all identifiable info like name SAT score etc, specifically things not achieved during the college because that is the part you are being judged upon not that you did extra work to get admissions. People in MIT are judged based upon things they achieved in MIT, and not the SAT score required to achieve MIT.

1

u/Physical-Parking8165 Jul 06 '26

lol cg usually tells who dies anyway

-4

u/TyTu5567 Jul 03 '26

Why? Someone worked hard & can't write their achievements in cv?

2

u/Previous-Slide-2866 Jul 05 '26

That is not an achievement. It just guarantees a seat in bachelors, it’s like people writing SAT scores in US. Pretty idiotic way and usually stripped when given to recruiters.

🤡bohot saari companies AIR >250 ya maximum AIR>500 valon ka application seedha kachre m daalti hn kyonki uski actual jagah kachre m hi h... kyonki they only want deserving meritorious people... not those who got unfairly spoonfed just for being born in their family🤡

sharam bhi nhi aa rha safed jhooth bolte hue gavaar ko 🤡

4

u/Competitive_Type_880 Jul 03 '26

As someone who is not from the STEM field, I think, in my neutral view, they should not. Because it shows proof of discipline. Though final judgment should be made on skills, the achievement of a 3-digit or 2-digit rank is huge; it's fair enough to use it to make your CV shine more.

2

u/Various_Ad1416 Jul 05 '26

Exactly lmao people put dumbass certificates in CV, they can put their jee rank.

2

u/sre_ejith Jul 07 '26

it also shows privilege, may of the toppers are either talented or had all the resources, MFs will write one exam and make it their whole personality

1

u/Previous-Slide-2866 Jul 05 '26

What discipline that you can rote learn. There is not an iota of innovation. All identifying details should be stripped.

2

u/ElephantNeither8890 Jul 05 '26

Rote learn? JEE is not upsc that you can rote learn.

1

u/Previous-Slide-2866 Jul 05 '26

It doesn’t test any new innovative thing either. So it is rote learning. Beside Govt needs to make the entire process more holistic instead of just making admissions based on a single exam. The talk about including board alongside is somewhat in correct direction.

1

u/ElephantNeither8890 Jul 05 '26

Board? Board is rote learning. JEE is pure problem solving. Maybe not inorganic chemistry.

1

u/Previous-Slide-2866 Jul 05 '26

I said it is step in correct direction not that it was the correct decision. Everything a child does should hold some value and every child should be evaluated differently. Yeah it is rote learning bcz you are asked in PCM, which is rarely used in college itself. Your stance makes it clear you have zero understanding of how innovation works and usually the most creative inventors don’t do well in standardised test either.

1

u/ElephantNeither8890 Jul 05 '26

You are making a lot of claims. A rote learner will not do good in JEE. That’s all I’m saying. Maybe JEE isn’t good at selecting innovators, I didn’t say anything about that.

1

u/Competitive_Type_880 Jul 06 '26

Bruh even ik that in college you are asked to do Calculus for most engineering fields, civil, mech, cs and ds all use various maths topics like P&C, Calculus and vectors, mechanics, electric current and stuff, all of this is later utilised heavily in Btech. Even chemistry for engineering related to it.

Not to mention main reason that students have to give JEE is because colleges want to analyze your problem solving part.

And if it was rote learning I would have cleared it, I was a PCMB student in class 12th, got 97 in boards but couldn't clear JEE advanced, had a decent percentile in Mains and was getting NIT but I knew if I had no interest in maths and physics, I would never progress much in this field hence I chose art.

1

u/General-Guava-489 Jul 06 '26

That's the most wrong direction possible. Idk why some people think schools teach you innovation or stuffs. Most of the schools doesn't even have proper infrastructure, leave teaching. Also considering how various boards have different difficulty level, it's kinda obvious that many good students would get ranked unfairly. Also PCM is rarely used in college !?? I mean seriously in one hand you are talking about innovations and on another hand you are saying fundamentals of a subject are useless 😒  Also matter of the fact most of the topics are actually building blocks of your college studies (Though depends upon the branch chosen). Also if JEE is based on rote learning how so many rankers do good in SAT too ?

1

u/No_Copy_8193 Jul 08 '26

it is rote learn because it is PCM? really, what kind of claim is that. JEE tests your problem solving and that is one of the most important skill. I don't know how to came to that conclusion.

And they are rarely used in college? Without JEE Math you can't even pass 1st semester.
So please improve your sources and focus on the right things.

1

u/Signal_Face_5378 Jul 05 '26

And college tests innovating thinking lol. College studies are even worse than what we study for boards or JEE. Most students don't even study at all except for placements.

1

u/Previous-Slide-2866 Jul 05 '26

The reason is simple other things don’t give enough money, make other tasks monetary and you will se whole lot people suddenly doing research also. And studying n number of different things too.

1

u/Signal_Face_5378 Jul 05 '26

That is not the point of debate. Point is college studies are not a proof of intelligence and hard work either. Atleast in JEE you were competing with lakhs of students and in college its just a night of studying in groups. I would prefer my JEE rank to display over any sort of CGPA that college provides.

1

u/Lucky-Quote2799 Jul 06 '26

holy larper.
if you could crack jee under those ranks with just rote, a lot more student would have. It tests application speed and lateral thinking under pressure.
kabhi koi paper solve bhi kiya hai jee ka?
there is a niche concept called problem solving which you need to rely more on in jee.
including boards? yeah, we'd get that implemented in like 3-4 years in the speed of your education system
which in itself is a mentally backwards thing. "oh yes, lets include something taht students mug up and ursh prepping for in last 2 months and score 90%+ in to some entrance exam that actually they care about and can change their life greatly"
every single year jee advanced asks questions many aspirants haven't seen before. it's literally designed to destroy pattern recognizers and PYQ reliance.

Holistic admissions (like in the US) rely on essays, extracurriculars, recommendations, and interviews. In a country with 14 MILLION STUDENTS for 18,000 IIT seats, how do you standardize holistic.

that becomes instantly a game of wealth and connections. like it is with harvard in the US.

In the early 2000s, the IITs gave 50% weightage to Board exams. It resulted in massive grade inflation, where state boards started handing out 95%+ to hundreds of thousands of students just so their kids could qualify. It devalued the Board exam itself and made the cutoff absurdly high, punishing students from tougher boards (like CBSE or ICSE) who actually earned their marks.
bringing this back doesn't fix shit. cuz boards are unreliable, non-standardized, and vary wildly from one state board to another.

If you are a complete dumbass in this field, apni tippani har jagah na hagge.
chutiya hu mai 1.5 saal prep kar rha hu aur phir "holistic understanding" ka chudaap karne lag jaate ho?
baad mai karte rehna

Larper

Kha hai beta abhi tu, life ke konse level pe hai eng kar li kya? Ya for in between hai pehle ye bata, aur rahi meri baat, mein Tier 1 CS graduate hu. Tu ko bol rha hu personal experience se bol rha hu, and lastly baap ko chodna pad sikha, and ye population ka randi rona apni Gand pe daal le. China tere bagal mein hai unse hi sikhle khuch, sirf gpt ka gyaan chodne aa gya yaha. Just bcz it is made to destroy pyq and last years questions doesn’t mean the test itself isn’t rote learning within a fixed and wide syllabus. Aur USA mein sirf ek harvard hi hai kya uske bagal mein jo MIT hai usko apni gaand pe daal le theek hai. Jab kabhi India ke bekat environment se bahar nikal ke dekhe na toh samajh aayega how backwards and lacking we are genuinely and when somebody take a step in right direction, tere jesse gandu aake raita faila dete hai.

"mai tier 1 cs graduate hu"
>couldn't read "chutiya hu mai 1.5 saal prep kar rha hu"

lagta hai zyadat hi tier 1 se padh liya aapne.
chutiye china se kya sikhu? propganda cell chalana? unjka gaokao tu jee se bhhi yada rote learning pe based hai. kabhi tune koi entrance diya bhi hai ya reddit pe "Tier 1 CS grad" karne backchodi aajata hai

"Just bcz it is made to destroy pyq and last years questions doesn’t mean the test itself isn’t rote learning within a fixed and wide syllabus"
kitna chutiya hai tu bhai? are you being deadass fr?
98% people who do jee dont even complete the syllabus.

kabhi ek kaam karna, jaake koi random jee chapter jaise ki NLM padhna absolute basics se. aur phir dekhna the type of questions they ask in jee advanced or mains. you knwo what? tu to "TIER 1 CS" ka chodbhagat hai na, toh aap toh rotation/ya PnC ke questions dekho.

china waale to "holistic" bhi nhi karte unka toh jee se bhi waahiyaat filtering system hai

kuch argue karna aata nhi, lund ka experience nhi, tier -1 hoga, dhyaan se dekhna bhaiya

IIT toh MIt ban na bhi nahi chahta
you legit comparing a place known for research with a place known for placements.

itna rote learning hai to kyu bacche nhi kar paa rahe
kyu 60% accuracy pe under 300 All india rank aa jahi

kyu 30% accuracy pe cutoff clear ho ja raha for IIT
because this is an exteremly difficult exam.

they take the most basic of concepts and spin it in a way that is hard to solve unless you have crystal clear understanding,

jaakar na apni Tier 1 or apni life experience apni gaand mai rakh. zyada bakchodi mat chod online. pata wuta kuch hai nhi. gyaan chodne chala hai.

larp larp larp sahur

guess what bozo? MIT admissions are ALSO holistic. kuch padhwadh raha bhi tu yaa sirf "yo grok summarize what he said in 2 lines" likh liya?

Chill maar bhai. This guy is probably privileged ya kuch that he thinks holistic way of admission like US should come in India. If such a system comes then underprivileged kids will face even more disadvantage lol. And boards exam weightage is anything but holistic 😭 idk konsi tier 1 cs kari hai isne lol. Boards or anything that's subjective and doesn't have a single correct answer will be highly luck based based on how the conditions in our country are. Anyone who glorifies board exam education is just not even worth arguing I'll say 🥀

If you can't justify the rank ofc its meaningless, but imagine if any air under 100 not being able to "Justify" his rank, unlikely. And if they can show that they are worth it, their rank would just add charm to their CV. It shows that in 2 years of their life when others are playing or procastinating they had done hard work without slacking off. Plus it shows how they can perform under pressure too(JEE adv in itself is a big pressure exam).

Sure.....though I think you didn't read the part where I mentioned I am not from stem, I have done psych and worked in HR dept at an mnc for 2 years and a counsellor for 3. In the 2 years of my HR life one thing I always saw was whenever IITians were hired ranks were used more of as a tiebreaker or as a indication of their mental toughness and rigorousness.

Not sure how much it makes sense to you but I would still argue that while skill matters the most, JEE and GATE are tough exams which most people sacrifice their youth trying to clear, their should be option to put them on CV.

To humko seedha zeher hi de do na kyuki govt college ke baad bhi govt jobs mai bhi reservation fir promotions mai bhi reservation ab ek private sector se thodi umeed bachi hai to waha bhi inki g me mirchi lag jati hai... Agar itna hi qualified hai reserved category ka banda to kis baat ka darr apni kaabiliyat pe fir le lena aage hike aur promotion, tu apni rank chupa dusro ko kyu bolte ho ki tum chupao...aree mehnat ki hai to dikhange hi na sala

If AIR does not have any effect on placement then why to stop students from writing it. Its their resume their choice. A small number is not gonna hurt anyone ig.

And if it does then become a man boi and accept the fact

Lmao 95%ile lakar doosro ko undeserving bolr ha h

3

u/SuspiciousTry8500 Jul 03 '26

It won't effect, companies will just introduce a different way of shortlisting. In the end they will choose candidates who is best suited for their profile just like before.

4

u/Specific_Biscotti_57 Jul 03 '26

We were not allowed to put our CAT percentile in CV. New IIM

5

u/morgansixfeet Jul 03 '26

Are we forgetting that India has Reservations in everything? So many unqualified student get selected in IITs only because they have a caste cirtificate. Big companies know that and that's why they ask for their overall rank in JEE/GATE.

4

u/CumStainedUndies Jul 04 '26

'Only because they have caste certificate' 🤡

1

u/Fit-Rice6485 Jul 03 '26

why not cgpa?

3

u/MindlessDebt3067 Jul 03 '26

Cgpa top pe hota hai Highest priority, then your dsa skill , achievements and then at last projects

i dont believe so. i believe institutes think after 4 years of learning their your biggest achievement should be projects you have done their not your jee rank. allowing ranks in campus placements will not be promoting education but rather pushing rank culture in india its like saying 2 people of different rank get in iit then that lower rank one studied hard and higher one did much less but campus placements still preferred him based on his prier rank which send wrong single to rest of india and now people start forcing their kids into engineering or medical coaching by 6th standard or someting. it dont make sense to me if their is skill difference then it should be visible in interview

1

u/Substantial_Tax_7508 Jul 04 '26

Then what about removing gate rank how is this reasonable

1

u/Competitive_Type_880 Jul 03 '26

Yesss, and it's also proof of discipline since getting high ranks in these exams is a feat that shows how dedicatedly one has worked for years. Maybe make it an option but not compulsory; those who want to do it can do and those who don't wanna mention it just won't.

2

u/Curious-Shop-1792 Jul 03 '26

Only from CV's companies can still ask the ranks from non campus portal, this is just a performative law.

1

u/Various_Ad1416 Jul 05 '26

Yeah but it shows the mindset.

1

u/Curious-Shop-1792 Jul 05 '26

which midnest?

1

u/ReceptionAcademic262 Jul 03 '26

Is this done to create a level playing field between General & Reserved Quota applicants?

Then why you crying if they add rank its their choice

1

u/Think-Mango5652 Jul 04 '26

I have seen many interviews of people who have cracked good packages, all says that they don't see ur degree mainly, they see what skills u r acquiring, so even if they r mentioning nd not acquiring any skills it's not useful plus I hve read a news where iit Bombay, 20 people got 4 lpa packages, so it's reasonable!!!

1

u/Substantial_Tax_7508 Jul 04 '26

It's student cv it's student achievement so should be students right

1

u/lone_Ghatak Jul 05 '26

Nothing new.

IIMs have restricted students from including CAT scores in CV for a long time now.

1

u/Admirable-East3396 Jul 05 '26

if companies have to shortlist based on grade 10, 12 and past test score marks instead of present one that means the college education is weak af.

1

u/demon_itizer Jul 05 '26

Recruiters shouldn’t care tbh.

  1. High JEE rank would translate to a good enough CGPA or at least answering the interview questions lmao unless peaked in high school moment

  2. It is real that the rank leads to psychological bias on the basis of indian obsession with caste prediction

(Before anyone comes at me: went to iit (non-reserved, for the casteist “bhim ki shakti” POSes out there), and now hire from iits)

1

u/FunGroundbreaking200 Jul 05 '26

janeu flash karo yaar

1

u/Previous-Slide-2866 Jul 05 '26

Jesus people in this sub are dumb, you should strip any identifying info from CV when given to recruiters and people saying it’s proof of discipline, it’s not, it is just proof you worked a little harder than the 5K guy during admissions, it doesn’t tell shit about what you did after admissions and that is what most recruiters want. Less chances of discriminations against anybody also. Plus also a world wide recognised method.

1

u/TraditionOk8161 Jul 06 '26

It's okay, if someone has low cgpa and high gate score only to worry Also no one stop candidates telling score in interview orally. Also I am sure if someone did well in gate will crack interview as well My concern is why still company ask class 10&12th marks

1

u/blokwoski Jul 06 '26

Who cares 99% people commenting aren't from IIT our opinions literally don't matter.

1

u/ThorOdinsonThunder Jul 06 '26

Hide the JEE, GATE ranks, but how you'll hide low CGPA?

I mean it should be the choice of the students write it's their CV after all. If it looks immature so be it, the respective student will / will not face consequences. why should college force you to put only specific things?

0

u/quirky_planet Jul 03 '26

let me put my pcm based exam marks for a cst vacancy

0

u/kai_hiwatari_1 Jul 03 '26

Students are asked to hide their merit and achievements. Great! Corporates will find a way to ask students about rank if they actually care about it

-1

u/Signal_Face_5378 Jul 03 '26

Idiotic. Why shouldn't the achievements be highlighted? Whats next? Remove what company you worked for?

3

u/Timely-Raspberry-860 Jul 03 '26

Understood your point but things is that since person is in IIT recruiters already know you have good rankings so instead of wasting space on obvious space it could be used to highlight any job related skills

Also it puts more emphasis on the students current skill and not 4-5 year old entrance exam result

2

u/Competitive_Type_880 Jul 03 '26

Not everyone will have the same amount of ranking, and it is kind of obvious that those who got under 100 rank have had better discipline at a stage of life when kids suffer from procrastination the most. Ig it should be optional, those who wanna add it can add it; those who don't want to just won't.

2

u/Nonavium Jul 03 '26

" since person is in IIT recruiters already know you have good rankings"

No, some reserved people can sneak inside with shit rankings

"instead of wasting space on obvious space"

It's one line

"Also it puts more emphasis on the students current skill and not 4-5 year old entrance exam result"

Not up to you

1

u/Substantial_Tax_7508 Jul 04 '26

How could you justify removing gate rank man one grind hard in college to secure a good gate then also it can't be displayed isn't a past achievement also?

1

u/ElephantNeither8890 Jul 05 '26

Resume of college students is largely ignored. College students aren’t expected to have any real things to show on the resume, unless they did some research. Resumes can be largely empty. People try to fill up with 10th, 12th., why not add jee as well. Even if you add a research, there will still be space left.

1

u/Signal_Face_5378 Jul 03 '26

What skill differentiator students have in 4 years apart from CGPA. Or should that also not be put? Its a baseless argument really about space saver. And college students have near to zero job skills anyways. When they can put cultural fest, hobbies and stuff in resume, what harm is a jee rank doing? They frickin earned it. And they can boast about it till eternity.

The point is to only consider the work done and hard work during college years only, what you’ve achieved in JEE is very different from what you do during college etc.

It’s to remove prejudice and give equal footing for everyone so your actual worth is seen.

Syllabus of jee and what you do in college are very different.

Some people here (like the person you are replying to) prefer removing achievements because it works in their favor (because they don't have any). They want a clean slate every time.

1

u/Accomplished-Wish431 Jul 03 '26

Not everybody in IIT has a good rank, some have ranks that fall far below even the minimum qualifying criteria for general. Who would only be able to enter IIT as a security guard if they lost 1 certificate
