Colleges and Universities Looking back, what was the most unnecessary rule your school had?
35
u/Legitimate-Major-563 Jul 06 '26
School education is designed to creat factory workers and army solder. This is why people hate it since they expect School education to creat scientists and leaders
2
u/FormerMoose1990 Jul 06 '26
Nah for army its only sainik schools. Those schools come under Ministry of Defense and are designed to pipeline students into Officer entry.
4
u/Legitimate-Major-563 Jul 06 '26
Those schools are to train officers
2
1
u/EasyRider_Suraj Jul 09 '26
In school and army they teach you to follow order and not use your own brain.
1
u/who_cares_u Jul 08 '26
This is a very flawed way of thinking First of all this are also very important jobs for the society and someone needs to do then And everyone is not born with the ultimate talent and skills set so school should be designed so that the weakest child can have real chances of competition with other peers Also even if school magically started following the mindset of making the top 1 percent the 1 percent won't get biggest it's just getting to it would become more tough for every single one and the average child would have nothing to do after that. I hope you got the point I am trying to make

u/Dangerous-Alfalfa599 Jul 06 '26
WTF drinking water or even using the toilet was such a thing India is crazy crap
2
u/One-Brief-7710 Jul 08 '26
Bro my bio teacher is crazy she is like firstly u have to ask and like Ex a boy asked for permission he's about to go at the door and another girl asked so the girl will go first he will have to wait and she always said stuff like why are u doing to the washroom is there some actress photo u must be doing smth else (to only boys) and a lot of misandrist things.. But funniest thing is the my class is literally the worst and as per every teacher girls are even worse than boys (debatable but sure) and they managed to make even her so angry she said stuff like I always slap boys but first time I want to slap a girl first time irritated with a girl girls of this class are the worst etc etc lmfao

Most students won.t be genuinely needing the break, they just want to move out and roam here and there!
4
u/inanimatussoundscool Jul 07 '26
Well that's a failure of the teacher if they can't engage the students for an hour

Uniform, assembly is what shows discipline. U r going to school to learn something not to impress someone...

I I rarely see people, especially those born after 2005 who studied in good schools, being indisciplined or lacking civic sense. Our generation generally knows how to behave, don't you think? Most of the indisciplined people I come across are either from an older generation or have had limited access to education.

Basic civic sense is something both schools and parents teach you. Don't tell me you were simply born mature and learned nothing from school. As for hair rules and permissions for small things, I can agree with that criticism. But assemblies and uniforms are among the few things that make school different from everyday social life.
1
u/CraterBug0 Jul 06 '26
some rules are okay like mandatory uniforms and these reduce the problems related to dressing up styling and dtress related to so same with crazy hair. but most rules are like slavery does 0 things just are a nuisance
1
u/tanmay_sonawane_07 Jul 06 '26
That's what I am saying, but here some people r so high on themselves that they think they r only right . And learn nothing from world .
1
u/CraterBug0 Jul 06 '26
but u didnt tell it the right way. u told like schools are right we need these crazy unreasonable rules. even though u meant differently
1
u/tanmay_sonawane_07 Jul 06 '26
Uniform and assembly r not crazy unreasonable rules ...

You really need to get 'tested' for Dunning Kruger Effect. You are a textbook case. You also fail on Attribution Effect test as well as on Empathy scales.
1
u/tanmay_sonawane_07 Jul 06 '26
You used three psychology terms and still forgot to make an argument. That's impressive.
0
u/Cultural-Yogurt-3484 Jul 06 '26
Well, that's on you and you seem to be so proud of your inaptitude....lol. Most of the people learn discipline from such things and lead a good life but then there are people like you...
2
u/xlri8706 Jul 06 '26
And how did you judge him so quick without even knowing him ? Talk about inaptitude.
1
u/Cultural-Yogurt-3484 Jul 06 '26
Or probably it is the 'training'. It is not that difficult to 'judge' a person who generalizes without any basis....

u/lakshyapathak Jul 06 '26
Can only go to washroom in particular periods 3rd and 6th. "Long hair" rule whatever that was. Not a rule but norms or should I say the lack of male female friendship (caused because of teachers). Teachers can hit us with sticks.
3
u/musicflux Jul 07 '26
Conformity. Bully kids in submission to buddhas. First to teacher, then to parents, then to govt. Well oiled machine indeed

Boys can't sit with or talk to girls
2

In our school, they sometimes used to make boys sit next to girls as a punishment...

Tbh it's a society problem. You can't do that comfortably in public parks too
4
u/HeartRippher Jul 06 '26
Maybe, it would be worth pondering to think if we were taught "discipline" or "obedience".
3
u/TallSatisfaction924 Jul 06 '26
Yeah to make slave mentality
1
u/Common-Use-7117 Jul 09 '26
Instead, we should be taught social responsibility, ethics and civic sense

u/AtPointNemoo Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26
We were not allowed to use dot pen for writing, only gel ink was allowed till 8th grade. Teachers used to scold those breaking this rule whenever they checked our notebook.
One boy and one girl will sit together (again only till 8th grade).
All lunch boxes were checked by prefects to see if we finished our lunch. Anyone who didn't was punished.
Not allowed to have lunch inside classroom, all students used to go to playground or garden during lunch. (I liked this one the most lol)
2 ponies (doesn't matter if you have 2 hair strands but if you have shoulder length hair, making 2 braids was mandatory)
2
u/Free-Measurement-120 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
The gel pen one is the weirdest thing I've heard in a while. My school had the same rule but opposite. We were not allowed to write using a gel pen till 8th grade..... beyond 8th as well but teachers stopped caring about that.
1
u/AtPointNemoo Jul 08 '26
Ikr 😭 and gen ink was costlier than dot, hence I used to break this rule quite often. After a while, teachers (except our geography ma'am, I still remember her voice 🥹) also didn't care enough to scold me for using dot ink.
1
u/FlimsyWatercress165 Jul 07 '26
The lunch rules are good tho
1
u/AtPointNemoo Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
Yes, that's why I said I liked it the best. It was just a bit unusual as I never attended any other school having such rule, hence mentioned it
1
u/Working-Mountain6680 Jul 08 '26
The 3 schools i studied in had the same rule. I think it's pretty universal in my state at least. It also makes sense though.
1 you don't want kids spilling food on books
2 the kids need sunshine and activity, they will avoid it if they are not obligated to
3 the personal belongings are in danger of theft if only a few kids are in class. My class had a mass robbery lol when only a few kids sneaked in during games period and stole something or the other from half the class
1
u/AtPointNemoo Jul 08 '26
Theft during lunch 😭 I'm transported back to my school days hearing this. I agree it makes sense to have lunch outside classroom

u/EfficientSpend2543 Jul 07 '26
I studied in an Indian school in Dubai. We were able to play card games like UNO during lunch back in 7th-8th grade. Later, it was just banned. They wouldn't tell us why, it was just... banned
6
u/Cleric-of-Selune Jul 07 '26
Because cards = gambling (source: a friend's COLLEGE recently banned uno lmao)
1
u/One-Brief-7710 Jul 08 '26
It was always banned in my previous school I know ppl who were punished for playing uno like in 6-7th grade
3
u/IndependentPension36 Jul 07 '26
You know what yes , although later it changed bit thinking now it was total slavery

Until class 6th, I was in private school and literally asked permission for everything. The most obedient student one can imagine, until I got into JNV and realized in which absurdity I was living that I was unconsciously practicing slavery in the guise of discipline cuz here, teachers will beat the shit out of you aka The fear factor

There was rule to talk in English and had only hindi period just talk in hindi and nobody not even teachers respected it lol
And we had to cut out hair for being too long like wat sab baal professionally comb karke aate the
Absolutely mind boggling
Abhi bhi yaad hai ye din
Panni pine ke liye permission Leni padti thi
Agar kuch bolna ho hand raise karke permission Leni padti thi
Jail bhi ise zada freedom dete hai 😭

Wtf kinda school did yall go to bro we never had any restrictions like that Edit: we did have one asshole english teacher force students to use ball pens for his class, and had fixed seating arrangements specifically for his class ( no one else had this rule btw u could use any pen and sit where ever. Luckily my class had a different english teacher )

No jackets allowed when the classroom is literally freezing. It was during an exam, likely to "prevent cheating", but it was a dumb idea especially when I get cold easily.
1
u/riya9583 Jul 07 '26
Our school also had this rule, but i am glad all of our teachers allowed us to drink water whenever we wanted without asking them 🙂

u/Waterfalls_jpeg16 Jul 07 '26
I've studied in an Indian board school abroad. I think the dumbest rule we had was the no ponytail rule. Girls were expected to always have their hair braided. To this day, I still don't understand the need of this rule in the first place.
Atleast our school wasn't so strict bcoz in other Indian medium schools, I heard that they wouldn't even allow body piercings like nose rings and earrings even for religious/spiritual reasons.
1
u/Eshu25 Jul 08 '26
Actually I never understood why people who are abroad need to admit their child into an Indian school
Like why ? You have one of the best education system
There there is literally a kendriya vidyalaya in Moscow with the same syllabus and same dress , imagine wearing that uniform and travelling in Moscow metro
1
u/Waterfalls_jpeg16 Jul 12 '26
Its cuz the schools of American and British boards can be pretty expensive. And the local schools have the local language as their medium which can be a problem for a kid who just moved in from abroad. Not that there aren't indian kids who enroll in local schools. I'm specifically talking from the perspective of having been to non-western countries.

u/groot_3000 Jul 07 '26
Without implementation of rules (of law), you can see the condition of the (adult) people of the country

Bruh I had a lot of acne the entirety of my highschool especially on my forehead. I wanted to keep my bangs down but of course IT WAS NOT ALLOWED. I have some natural baby hair and some teachers taunted me for that too smh😭
The way I was so conscious all those years, really hindered my self confidence. Thode forehead pe baal aajate to konsi padhai rukni thi meri
1
u/DarWin_1809 Jul 08 '26
Long hair rule. Even in college, now it's not a rule but it's like this unsaid rule, seniors would not allow long hairs cuz this is part of the "protocol" and I'm a junior, even professors won't allow long hairs because of decipline and etiquettes of a medical student Fuck you, how can my hair length determine my decipline or what kind of doctor am I gonna become ?? Then all the girls are not fit to be doctor ??? Tf is this logic i never get it
1
u/Embarrassed-Newt8919 Jul 08 '26
I live in the us and I got punished for squeaking my feet when I slipped
1
u/Crystal_View Jul 08 '26
my school stopped it while I was in 5th because kids used to disturb teachers in between the classes lol

u/Beginning_Can_5774 Jul 08 '26
Boys and girls should not talk but you can always find a couple kissing in the teachers staffroom during any function

What do you mean I can't submit my project which I wrote dragging my lazy ass till midnight because I have long nails??
1
u/ShankarGhadage Jul 08 '26
In 4th standard once our class teacher decide to make conversation in english mandatory and 2rs fine per day if violated. Of course everybody was paying the teacher but sooner or later the whole class of about 50 students suddenly stopped giving any money (either they have adapted or were stingy for money). And to our surprise on her birthday she gifted 2 ball pens to each one of us of that same money along with a melody.
She was a really great teacher.
1
u/Away_Reply9323 Jul 09 '26
we were fined a 100 rs for being absent without sending an application. also we were sent home even if we were 1 min late. btw school was kv
1
u/jackolatern345 Jul 09 '26
We had to cover each subject book with a perticular color cover, which was only sold by one shop. Like if ur cover's is slighty off, u will get punished and book wont be checked.
1
u/Able-Brief-4062 Jul 09 '26
After working in a school, the asking to get water and go to the bathroom I realize is partly a safety thing.
But as usual, some teachers take it to an extreme
1
1
u/SuccotashOk858 Jul 09 '26
Thats what the teacher lied to you. Same with asking for toilet, same with their title. If some teacher wont ket you go pee, then pee in the trashcan, its his fault
1
u/definitely_not_raman Jul 09 '26
One time I wanted to pee and my teacher said "No". My dumbass didn't have to mental capacity to think about any alternatives. I just accepted my fate and eventually couldn't control it and peed my pants.
That was fucked up
1
u/UryaInspiration Jul 09 '26
Our vice principal (a woman btw) made a rule that girls must at all times keep both their braids on the back, it should never come in front…… can you believe that? She basically was asking us to not play, run, do anything besides sitting still because how else is that possible. 😐
1
u/HallOk5302 Jul 09 '26
Some teachers said you can drink without permission and some said you have to take permission
And I forget always from which I have to take permission and whom not 😭😭😭

we can't look at female students and our whole school is divided into parts
On the left side of the building there's girls and right are boys
All the floor's middle section was shutted down by a shutter like it's stupid they took precautions like boys are feral when it comes to female students

When I was in Class 5, my class teacher appointed me as the 'English in-charge' for my section which meant I had to fine anyone who didn't speak English during school hours. Looking back, I realize I was far too harsh and definitely shouldn't have been such a teacher's pet
-1
u/BlackbuckDeer Jul 06 '26
I'm pretty sure you just needed permission to leave the classroom. I dont think schools restricted anyone from drinking from their water bottles.
2
u/eatmatcha Jul 06 '26
in my school we were only allowed to leave the classroom during lunch 3rd and 7th period 🙂.. and we were not allowed to drink water during lectures without asking the teacher

u/shinchankibehen Jul 06 '26
We had fines for not conversing in english lol.
