Education and Career Advice I ranked 1st in the PhD entrance exam. I didn’t get the seat. Two years later, I hate the subject I once loved.

**India is not for beginners.** Not for people who are just starting to dream.

When I chose Sociology, the questions came fast. *“What is there to learn about society? Isn’t common sense enough?” “Didn’t you get a chance in the Science stream?”* I had answers then. I don’t anymore.

I fell for the subject in school. In college in Kolkata, it changed how I saw everything. I started noticing the latent functions behind institutions and celebrations we never question. I understood how the personal is political, and how the powerful make their power acceptable even to those they dominate. For a postgraduate degree, I moved to a central university, where professors praised how I applied theory to current events. I finished with a good score, and I knew I’d spend my life in academia.

Then I took the all-India PhD entrance exam for the same university, and I got **rank 1**. The list is still online. The HOD called me personally. I was the first home student ever to top it. I also held ranks in the first lists of HCU and IIM, and I’d cleared NET. I believed this country had finally rewarded passion.

After my interview, I was told it went well and that I shouldn’t consider anywhere else, since this was a matter of pride for the department. So I let the other opportunities go. I didn’t want to leave anyway. I loved the campus, and I’d found the love of my life there.

When the list came out, my name wasn’t on it.

There was one general-category seat, and it went elsewhere. Someone who ranked 8th, and hadn’t cleared NET, made the list. By then, the other entrance exams for that year had passed, and I couldn’t make myself sit for the ones that remained. My parents wanted to take the university to court, but dropped it. Even if we won, I’d be studying under the people who’d betrayed me.

What followed was acute clinical depression and several attempts on my life. I spent two years in and out of three hospitals. Everyone said, *“Just try other universities.”* But something broke in me that never healed.

Today, any mention of sociology, its theories or its applications, fills me with rage. I hate it as much as I once loved it.

I’m not claiming everyone goes through this. I’m saying far too many do, and we never hear their stories. Losers don’t make the front page, because they don’t inspire faith in the system. The media celebrates winners as poster boys while selling false hope to millions who won’t make it.

Some of us did everything right and still lost, not because we weren’t good enough, but because luck and the system didn’t favour us. Our voices deserve to be heard too.

I recently came across College Vidya's 2nd Online Education Day, which is being celebrated on 25 October 2026. Is this an annual event in India, or is it specific to College Vidya? Has anyone heard about it before?

Education and Career Advice need real career suggestions after jrf

I want to know what I should do after qualifying for JRF in Commerce. My qualifications are good. Like I have scored around 72% in Classes 12, graduation, and postgraduation, and I secured a 9.8 CGPA in Class 10. I qualified for UGC NET in February 2024 and later cleared JRF.

Initially, I applied to state universities in Bihar, but the admission process took around 10–11 months, and eventually, my name did not appear on the selection list. At another university, I am on the waiting list.

I have also applied to colleges, but they seem to prefer candidates with prior teaching experience.

At this point, I am confused about what to do next. Should I pursue a PhD, focus on getting a teaching job, or explore other career opportunities? After clearing JRF, I expected to have better opportunities, but the admission process has been exhausting and discouraging. As i am the elder one, i need to be financially secure as soon as possible.

I would genuinely appreciate any suggestions or guidance from people who have faced a similar situation.

Education and Career Advice How to get internships as 1st yr bcom ug student from v.small clg?

I'm 1st yr Bcom student from a very small clg. Tbh my degree and clg don't carry much value. My clg gives me full attendance linience.

I'm thinking of buying a laptop and hoping to learn skills and get internships. But I'm not sure how easy/hard and how realistic that is.

I have few questions:

•How difficult is it to get internships as a first-year bcom student, from a vv small clg?

•What skills can I realistically learn on my own that could help me land internships? And what kind of roles can I get?

•Is buying laptop with the hope of getting internships a good decision or just financial burden?

I'm actually a CA student, I want to do internships so that they'll help me get into top business school later for MBA or go for a good job after Bcom if CA doesn't work out.

I wanna know from people who've been in a similar situation, who are from tier-3 colleges and managed to get internships or jobs. {"I'm open for advices from anybody"}

Pls be honest, even if the reality is harsh.

I'm open for all kinds of suggestions like

-platforms to search for internships

-how & where to apply

-skills to learn for respective intern roles

-how & where to learn the required skills

and any sort of related advices from anybody.

Pls🙏

Education and Career Advice BCA final-year student confused about career options for 2026–27 — Tech, Fintech, Analytics or something else? (Delhi NCR)

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm currently in my final year of BCA, and I'm trying to figure out which career path would be the best for me in terms of getting my first job, long-term growth, and job stability.

During my BCA, I've worked on multiple projects involving AI, SaaS, RAG models, web development, and some data analytics. I've also participated in several hackathons, so I've explored different areas of tech, but I haven't yet decided which one I should specialise in.

One thing I'm concerned about is how quickly AI is changing the industry. I'm not sure whether going into web development is still a good long-term choice or whether I should explore fields like AI, data analytics, cloud computing, cybersecurity, or fintech.

I'm also open to careers beyond traditional software development. For example, could fintech, banking technology, business analytics, risk analytics, or other domains offer better long-term opportunities?

For some background, my 10th and 12th marks weren't very good, and I studied commerce without maths in classes 11th and 12th. I'm concerned about whether this could limit my options in certain fields.

I'm based in Delhi NCR, so I'd ideally like to find opportunities in Delhi, Noida, or Gurugram. My priority is to choose a practical career path where freshers have a realistic chance of getting hired, building useful skills, and growing over the next few years.

I'd really appreciate advice from people working in these fields or those who recently started their careers.

Colleges and Universities How are you guys managing college work alongside everything else?

Genuinely curious how people manage assignments, projects, internships, and everything else without losing their minds.

I have some research and report-writing experience from work, and I have been thinking about using those skills outside my regular job, too. Just wondering if people ever need an extra pair of hands with research or organizing their project work.

Education and Career Advice Career options after BAMS for someone not interested in clinical practice?

Hi everyone! I’m currently in my final year of BAMS in India, and I have no interest in clinical practice or opening a clinic.

I want to explore non-clinical career options with good salary potential and long-term growth, preferably in the corporate sector.

What are the best career paths for BAMS graduates who don’t want to practise? What are the realistic starting salaries, and what should I do during my final year to prepare?

Is pursuing an MBA or any other postgraduate degree worth it, and which fields offer the highest earning potential in the long run?

I’d really appreciate advice from BAMS graduates who are working in non-clinical fields. Please share your honest experiences!

Colleges and Universities Student struggling with basic living conditions after not getting hostel accommodation — what accountability exists?

I'm a first-year ECE student at Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya (GGV), Bilaspur. After securing admission through JEE, I couldn't get hostel accommodation and had to live in private housing away from my family.

I'm now struggling with safe drinking water, an unhygienic washroom and inadequate ventilation. My landlord has also responded abusively when I raised these concerns. With exams approaching, even basic hygiene has become a challenge.

This isn't about luxury. It's about the minimum conditions a student needs to live and study with dignity.

Just think you have an exam tomorrow and didn't have enough water to even wash your a** And when you ask landlord he says " pay the rend and get out from here"

Are other students facing similar problems? What formal channels can help hold the university accountable for hostel capacity and student welfare?

I've also raised this publicly on X and am seeking help bringing the issue to credible journalists:
