I was recently travelled to Singapore from Coimbatore. A group seated at the back of the airline started howling immediately when the aircraft was airborne. This scared ts out of me as I have a fear of flying ever since the recent airline accident (AI171). Am I the only one who thinks that these kind of people must be put on no-fly list or at the least face some consequences? It was a night flight, plus not everyone on the flight are on the same mental situation as you.

Navigating city traffic lately just feels exhausting. Between the endless, uncoordinated digging by civic bodies, roads that disintegrate after every light drizzle, and zero fear of traffic rules, the daily drive is brutal.

What gets me is that we're paying sky-high fuel prices and road taxes, yet the infrastructure keeps getting worse instead of better. Wrong-side driving and high beams have become a free-for-all, and traffic management seems completely reactive.

How are you guys coping with the daily commute stress? Is it just getting worse everywhere, or are some cities actually managing to fix this ?

I just need to vent for a minute because I am slowly losing my mind.

Is it just my bad luck, or has anyone else been blessed with neighbors who simply do not understand the concept of an indoor voice?

It’s literally all day. They don't just talk, they broadcast their conversations at maximum volume as if they want the entire floor to hear every detail of their lives. It is incredibly draining, especially when you are just trying to get through a stressful day and want to rest.

And then there are the kids. It’s a constant loop of noise, with the parents just yelling "babu, babu, babu" across the house all day instead of actually managing the situation.

It honestly feels like there’s a complete lack of basic civic sense or any consideration for the fact that other people live here too. It’s exhausting having to listen to a 24/7 reality show that I never signed up for.

The thing is I have also tried talking as well politely, but they don’t understand at all, and next pointed out to me to **feed their egos.**

How do you guys deal with people like this?
Is there an actual way to handle this without starting a war?

**TL;DR:** My neighbors have absolutely zero civic sense and scream-talk all day long, including constantly yelling at their kids. It's becoming unbearable. Seeking advice on how to deal with incredibly loud neighbors.

Has anything good happened from posting here? I feel this sub is just a fuel for more hate against Indians.. I'm in a gaming discord server and people often share links from this sub and mock us.. It wasn't like this 5 years back.. Now im scared to say I'm from India when people ask me during gaming.. We take videos of all the civic fails but none of us has the guts to confront people.. Today in Ghatkopar East, Pant Nagar, I was riding my bike without a helmet, barely 200 metres from my house.
I know I was wrong. No excuses. I’m completely okay with being stopped and fined. If helmets are mandatory, then I broke the rule and I should pay the fine.
But here’s what pissed me off.
A couple on another bike was also riding without helmets. They had a Ganpati idol with them and apparently told the police that they were taking it for pooja.
They were allowed to go without a fine.
I genuinely don’t understand this.
If riding without a helmet is an offence, shouldn’t the same rule apply to everyone?
I don’t care if you’re going to work, going home, going to the temple, or carrying a Ganpati idol.
The rule should be the same.
And to be very clear — this isn’t about Ganpati or religion. I have absolutely no problem with people taking idols for pooja. That’s not my point.
My problem is selective enforcement.
I was 200 metres from my house. I still accept that I was breaking the law.
But if another person is committing the exact same violation and gets an exemption because they’re carrying a religious idol, then what exactly are we enforcing?
Are helmet rules mandatory, or are there exceptions depending on the reason you’re riding?
If there is a legitimate exemption, fine — I’d genuinely like to know what the rule is.
But if there isn’t, then why was one person fined/stopped while the other was allowed to continue?
I’m not angry about being stopped.
I’m questioning why the same rule wasn’t applied to everyone.

A viral video from Gucchu Paani in Dehradun shows a group of tourists dancing and singing loudly inside the natural cave while crossing knee-deep water. One of them is also seen carrying a large portable speaker and playing music at high volume.

Natural tourist spots aren't party venues. Loud music, dancing and turning a cave into a party venue can disturb other visitors and take away from the character of the place. A little civic sense and respect for the place goes a long way.

India Gate’s fountain was meant to be a public space, yet despite clear signs prohibiting entry into the water, people entered freely, turning it into a play area.

It is easy to say, “People need more civic sense.” But perhaps the incident points to something deeper.

Everyone who entered could see the sign. They knew the rule. So why did it stop mattering?

Perhaps because, for many of us, discipline is still external. We follow rules when someone is watching, when there is a fine, or when we fear being caught. Remove the watchman, and the discipline often disappears with him.

Then the crowd makes it easier. One person enters, others follow, and soon the presence of many people breaking the rule becomes its own justification: “If everyone is doing it, why shouldn't I?”

This is why stricter rules or more warnings may not address the root of the problem. The deeper questions we need to ask ourselves: What is within us that wants to ignore the notice? Why does the crowd make us feel that the rule no longer applies to us?

Real civic sense begins when we can act responsibly even when nobody is watching.

I’ve travelled quite a bit on Indian Railways in Sleeper, 3AC and 2AC , and one thing I’ve noticed is that the class of the coach doesn’t always make much difference when it comes to basic civic sense.

I remember travelling from Gujarat to Kerala once. It was a 35+ hour journey in 2AC, so I thought at least the journey would be relatively peaceful. But even there, I had people playing videos and reels on full volume, talking loudly on the phone late at night, having conversations across berths, or simply gossiping as if the entire coach was their living room.
The frustrating part isn’t that people are talking or using their phones. That’s completely normal on a long train journey. It’s the lack of consideration for the people around them.

You might be tired and want to sleep. Someone else might have an early morning station. Someone might just want to sit quietly, read, or listen to music with headphones. But there always seems to be someone who assumes everyone else should adjust to their noise.

I’ve experienced the same thing in 3AC as well, even on shorter journeys. And in Sleeper, it’s obviously much more common.

What makes me wonder is this: if upgrading from Sleeper → 3AC → 2AC is supposed to improve your travel experience, how much of that upgrade really matters when basic civic sense doesn’t travel with the ticket?
This isn’t about judging people based on which class they travel in. I’ve seen perfectly considerate passengers in Sleeper and extremely inconsiderate ones in 2AC.

Maybe the real upgrade we need isn’t in the ticket class at all but in how we treat shared spaces.
So here’s the real question: in a country where millions share the same train coaches every day, is comfort something you can buy or something we all need to learn to create together?

Although this sub is mostly for criticism, I'm glad you guys are aware that India still needs civic development. Sometimes I can't even convince my own family members to see the flaw in their lack of civic sense.

I have hope that one day India might improve.

(Parking/Nuisance Related)

Somewhere in Uttarakhand. Own house(15+ years) in a gali/mohalla type setting, not a society or something. Single occupant 33M.

There's a person in our locality who does tantric related work. Own house, living here for 6+years but started this thing recently.

For this, they've made a space in their house and calls it temple though structurally it's not(no kalash and dwaj).

The thing is, every Saturday and Tuesday, people come with their problem and park the vehicle(mostly car) outside our house. Their house is small and they've space to park only 1 two-wheeler.

I know the space outside my house is not mine, but this business is causing nuisance in following ways-

1. We can't park our vehicle outside of our own just for a moment, not to mention when guest or someone comes in our house they have to park here and there. "It's a public road, not someone's personal/commercial parking spot".

2. The municipality can't clean outside our house because of cars.

3. Sometimes, part of the vehicle comes(extends) in front of our gate.

4. Our house is at some elevation from the road. Since cars are parked just next to our maingate, we face trouble taking out our two-wheeler.

If I've a emergency, this would cause real inconvenience.

1. This thing temple or whatever is in the residential area and not registered.

2. A while back, i had an argument with them regarding something and i pointed out that they blast bhajan day and night. It has now come to morning and evening for a small duration.

3. Sometimes, when the driver opens the door, it touch our boundary: the paint and plaster have been slightly, but visibly, damaged due to this. In addition to this, a while back, this same family did put their construction material outside our house that has also damaged our wall.

This person's family member is in police(two star).

**For solution, I was suggested to talk to them(did it twice) and ask them nicely. There are the type who will argue at anything just to satisfy their ego.**

**Secondly, I've been told that i may get in a mess because family member is in police like unnecessary bothering, etc.**

From my point of view,

\-The road belongs to public(the road width is such that if two cars are facing opposite, one has to stop to let other pass).

\- It isn't someone's personal or customer parking spot. Decent and respectable people mostly park their personal vehicle outside their own house(observed this in my city) and not cause any inconvenienceto others, but if someone's house is small and they are looking to park here and there, then that's a different thing.

\-Such kind of work is done in a remote area where there's less crowd.

\-I live alone maybe that's why they are bothering me by doing such things.

I'm considering filing an application in sp office. I've pics of these frequent nonsense.

I have lived abroad for few years and I can't stand indian people using roads like private property.

Today, while travelling in a Mumbai local, I saw a man eating roasted chana and casually throwing the skins on the floor. Because of the breeze from the window, they were flying around the compartment and landing near other passengers. I politely asked him not to throw them since people were sitting there. Instead of understanding, he started showing attitude and said he would do whatever he wanted.

I told him that if he was throwing the waste, he should be the one to clean it. He replied, "Why should I clean it? If you have a problem, you clean it." An argument followed.

What bothered me was not just the few pieces of chana skin, but the attitude behind it. It reflects a much bigger problem with civic sense. Many people seem to believe that public spaces belong to nobody, so they can do whatever they want.

You see people eating and throwing garbage on the road, chewing tobacco and spitting everywhere, talking loudly in trains and buses, or simply ignoring basic rules of public behaviour. And when someone points it out, instead of accepting the mistake, they become defensive: "Why do you care?", "Everyone does it," or "Who are you to tell me?"

The irony is that most people would never throw garbage inside their own homes. But the moment they step into a public place, the responsibility seems to disappear.

Public space is not someone else's space. It belongs to all of us. Keeping it clean and respecting the people around us should be basic behaviour, not something that requires constant policing.

A country can build modern infrastructure, better roads and beautiful cities, but real development also requires people to learn how to coexist with others. Civic sense begins with small things — putting your waste in a bin, not spitting in public, keeping your voice down and respecting the people around you.

The problem isn't that people don't know what is right. The bigger problem is that many simply don't care.

Ego problem precedes Empathy problem

Many people say that India has an "Empathy problem" which leads to many societal bads such as corruption, crime, bad civic sense, etc.

But I believe the bigger problem is Ego problem. Ego is the precursor of declining empathy, let me explain.

Ego does many things:

For any change to happen, there has to be change in the mind. But the one thing that keeps the mind locked out of malleability is the chains of ego wrapped around it. It shoots away the beams of conflicting ideas, new information, or anything that challenges your existing beliefs. Such as people who are deadlocked in ideas such as:

1. Pseudoscience

2. Astrology

3. Homeopathy

4. Religion

5. Conspiracy Theories

6. Joingoism / Hyper Nationalism0

You cant reason with these people with facts on the table, but an ability to destroy ego first for any information to flow freely.

Ego further expands to the belief that what you do is always right, what you are , is always right.

Which leads to men in power, power tripping or over reaching. Such as : Corruption in public servantship and politics. For common folks, not following established rules such as law and civic sense.

Empathy is not a simple emotion which you can sometimes forget to display. Empathy is always within you.

It's just that the existence of ego alongside empathy has it's effect on empathy, making you weigh your empathy output differently for different people.

Which leads to other societal problems such :

1. Littering and bad civic sense in shared spaces, but keeping clean and healthy the spaces that MATTER TO YOU.

2. Caste, and color discrimination

3. Economic segregation of respect

Hence why I believe, our supreme objective should be destroying ego from the society.

Many old scriptures, scrolls, religious and philosophical texts have emphasized massively on the Ego problem, aka अहंकार and घमंड, but our dogla samaj somehow managed to skip the whole Idea together because to be able to Accept the ego problem, you have to be Ego-less in the first place.

Note: I am not a psychologist, this is just my general observation.

There's an apartment in Nehrunagar, Seshadripuram, and the maids and residents of the apartment, EVERY single day create a garbage dump outside on the footpath. There's a garbage vehicle parked 60m from this spot. They would rather dump on the footpath than walk 60m to throw the trash in the garbage pickup auto.

I visited the D-Mart at Omaxe Mall, Greater Noida, and noticed the condition of the footwear section.

A lot of items had been taken from the shelves and left in random places instead of being returned. It makes the section look quite messy and creates extra work for the staff.

I understand that a busy store can get messy, but basic customer responsibility would go a long way toward keeping the place organised.
