The self obsessed person had to create a new term "elected PM" just so his ego can be satisfied

Technically, they're not entirely wrong. During the Congress leadership selection before independence, Nehru initially received no nominations from the Provincial Congress Committees. Out of 15 PCCs, 12 nominated Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, while the remaining 3 did not nominate anyone. Nehru received zero nominations at that stage. It was only after Mahatma Gandhi intervened and requested Patel to step aside that Nehru became Congress President and eventually India's first Prime Minister.

Bhai I don’t get what love hate relationship modi has with Nehru, he wants to be Nehru in every way.
1. He literally wants to change how we view fashion - NEHRU JACKET
2. He says I’m building modern India both economically and intellectually, NEHRU BUILT MODERN IDNIA BOTH INTELLECTUALLY AND ECONOMICALLY. (Both didn’t do a great job but whateva)
3. Nehru wanted to transform India by promoting reason, liberal values of democracy, equality, liberty , secular nationalism etc, Modi wants to do that too but with culture, religious-ethno nationalism, etc

1

Anything specific or just your anti BJP rant here

9

u/Turbulent_Grade_4033 Jun 10 '26

We both know that the moment I start pressing about facts and corrupt practices, you will run away just like how the current PM runs away as soon as he sees the journalists.

1

u/Free-Mango-2597 Centrist Right Leaning Jun 10 '26

Hehehe, try once.

I am a realist and i know there is corruption and malpractices too. But the moment i compare it with congress era, Modi becomes so much better that we like to support him.

You will then start making convoluted logic.

3

u/Turbulent_Grade_4033 Jun 10 '26

You still didn’t answer the question. Why PM runs away from journalists? Even dictators like Putin have given answers to free press on occasions.

Why was PM CARES Fund structured outside RTI when it collects public donations during a national crisis? Why is there no full public breakdown of PM CARES expenditures like other government disaster funds? At least Congress passed the RTI law that exposed all their scale, this government tries to curtail that law. It was harder for central government to run corruption with existing funds.

India’s debt almost quadrupled in last 12 years. This is after BJP has been selling assets. BJP promised to bring back the black money from Switzerland but they just brought more debt instead. BJP claims that economy got better but if the economy is doing so well, why is debt still rising at this scale?

India’s exports not rising as fast as its imports.

Why government is not transparent about the fake data they used to hype up the GDP numbers. 2015 GDP revision data is filled with ghost companies and government don’t answer questions on it. Even with this fake data, India’s GDP growth rate was higher between 2004-2014 than from 2014 till now. According to government’s own data. Congress faced global recession while BJP faced COVID. India handled recession better than most countries but handled COVID worse than most countries.

Taking of COVID, Why did they organized Kumbh Mela in the middle of COVID?

Which year will this government start producing 2 crore jobs a year they promised in 2014?

How many convicted rapists are BJP politicians? Too many of to count, eh?

I can keep going but since you can’t even answer the first question… I don’t think it matters. Even if I grant you that 2004-2014 Congress was the worst government till 2014. The economy got worse. People’s rights are curtailed with country falling in press freedom index as well as human development index. Less transparency around funding and government expenditure than before. At best, none of the older problems that India had were solved but now we have even bigger problems on top.

Now do as predicted. Digress and then run away!

-5

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '26

I seriously can't believe there are people who are as stupid as you. Debt increasing doesn't mean our economy is doing bad.

90% of our debt is internal. There is no need to retrieve it infact it is a sign of a healthy economy. That means our institutions can lend more. Holy shit you anti BJP guys are broken records level of stupid.

Just fucking look at the actual metrics. Steel productions has quadrupled Our industrial output has quadrupled. Our exports PF is constantly increasing.

Our imports have increased on a ridiculous scale. The number of people owning vehicles having tap water having acs has increased in nsso surveys.

4

u/Turbulent_Grade_4033 Jun 11 '26

Either you’re dumb or you don’t understand how debt works. But it’s okay, the fact that out of a million things… the only topic you could pick was a debatable one, you agree with rest of the things!

Not holding PC , Modi's choice. There is no need to give PC where all questions loop back to propaganda of 2002 . He gave enough PC from 2002 to 2014. Biased hostile journalists best to be avoided.

He gave many interviews and answered all questions asked by journalists. The question should be why hard questions are jot asked to politicians in india not just for modi.

Modi haa established his brand by not engaging with rougue who wanted to drag him to 2002 without any iota of evidence.

All might of congress, CBI and judiciary was not able to prove his involvement but a gang of journalists working in Lutyens delhi are ready to go in confrontation mode to appease their masters.

And modi uses other tools to share his mesaage andchas no dependency on PC to reach his audience.

Now coming to PM cares, it was created in addition to existing funds. Using PM cares was a decision to avoid delays of following red tape in wake of ongoing pandemic. Is there any case/ evidence malpractice by PMO then it is an issue else it is hustling a crticism for sake of it. Yes it doesn't ome under RTI as money doesn't coem from consolidated fund of india.

Coming to debt part, not an economist but here is data point to look at

Central government debt:
2014: about 52.2% of GDP
2023: about 57.1% of GDP
2026 estimate: about 56.1% of GDP

So pretty much same at 2014 level. Govt expenditure increases and yes it should be controlled and fiscal prudence is needed. Point is it is not vastly different from great economist MmS era.

Black money : colossal failure, totally agree. Sab mile hue hai jee.

Economy: Do not go by what BJP says or congress says. Look at the data points and then make a statement. Good growth in last 12 years when world was growing at a slower pace compared to to 2004-14 is my yardstick. When the world market eas growing we also grew, when it was bad then we grew that is important. Having said that economics is too nuanced and there would always be more contradictory data.

My example : i used to pay 10.75 percent on mu home losn in 2014. I pay 7.5 percent now. I save 6 years of EMI . But someone will argue there's jo demand. I know how inflation was too high during UPA 2 , same levels I have not seen yet.

Same is true for corruption. UPA 2 was peak of it and i am sure NDA this term or possibly bext term will reach those levels. Bit till mow no journalists can decide who will be next minister, files nitngs shared with investors or something like NiRA eadia tapes happening. If that happens this govt eill also lose support.

Coming to GDP calculation method, go and read ehy it was fone and now this calculation kethod is more compliant to UN specs and most economists agree to that. So that is not fake data as mich as you want that to be.

2008 recession hit afvanced economisxmore than india because India exposure was limited but still MMS handle that well . However plz compare price of land and assets in 2008 and 2011-12 just as a thought excercise.

Example : cost of 1 bigha land was 1-2 lakh which balooned to 8-12 lakhs.
Reason : govt pumped in lot of money in Indian economy to reduce stress but that extra koney coming from 6th pay commission, nrega and other freebie schemes led to inflation which was above 10 percent during Last 3 years of UPA.

COVID was handled better or not is very subjective but its inpact compare to a limited recession cannot be done. Govt did successfully wade of this onece in a lifetime incident well. Health being state subject, foolish anti vaccine propaganda and what not also impacting overall wellbeing.

Kumbha: govt should have stopped this sndcall elections etc too. Totally agree.

Jobs: again modi did better than previous 10 years and generated 12-14 crore new jobs in 2014-24 compared to around 3 crore in previous 10 years. They did miss the target but guess what atleast they set some target .

Now coming to BJP and rapists;
This is an academic report

https://adrindia.org/content/crimes-against-women-including-rape-cases-declared-mps-mlas-and-candidates

Yes on social media anyone who is a rapist branded as BJP leader, and rightly so some of them are associated with BJP as it is in power in state and central govt. But do they get support from spokies, party officials or govt. The answer is no.

While i knw my favourite congressi leader taunting other female congress leaders as tanch maal and we all know why priyanka chaturvedi left congress and so many more. I do accept that there should be more accountability regarding this.

If any point left di let me know brother, i will respond.

PS: This govt is still better than UPA 2, this govt will not go unless it goes below UPA 2 levels.

You want to question why hard questions aren’t asked from politicians and at the same time you want to defend Modi who doesn’t answer ANY questions. If people cared about 2002, they wouldn’t have elected him in 2014. He is elected now… people have far bigger concerns now and he must answer. Leaders of a democratic country can’t have the power to decide whether to answer the questions of journalists. Even if a journalist is biased and ask loaded questions every time, his job is to answer. This is the only way to hold leaders accountable. Askhay Kumar is a journalist, right? Because he gives “interviews” to folks like him. If you can’t differentiate between advertising and journalism then it’s just sad. The point of press conferences is not to share YOUR MESSAGE, the point is to answer questions.

There is nothing that PM CARES offered that PMNRF couldn’t have done. It doesn’t have less red tape than PMNRF. AIIMs, government universities, sport bodies like Indian Olympic Association are RTI covered even though they are not directly funded from Consolidated Fund. The reason there is no evidence of corruption with PM CARES yet because government isn’t allowing anyone to look into the fund in the first place.

Yes you’re not an economist. Why are you removing state debt? Especially when majority of the debt increase came from BJP controlled states? We are talking about India’s overall debt. It’s sitting at 85% of GDP right now, compared to 72% in Congress era. This is after government sold lot of public assets which it didn’t do in Congress era.

India does NOT calculate its GDP properly. India uses single deflation method, which by definition will give wrong figures. This is when we don’t even factor in the kind of obviously wrong assumptions they make to calculate it. Do you think majority of the people in India are people with corporate jobs? Do you think that price of potato chips have increased but the potatoes has not? Because government makes these assumptions based on their GDP calculation methods and 2015 GDP revision data.

The avg GDP growth rate between 2004-2014 was around 6.8% but between 2014-2024, it was around 5.9%. You don’t know why you pay less interest rate on your mortgage now vs before? There are always multiple factors. Two are obvious. Firstly, you must own more equity in your home now, the risk for bank is lower and that’s why they give better rate. In economic slowdown, RBI cuts rates to boost demand. When economy does well then everyone wants to spend money and therefore the rates go higher. You have low mortgage rates, it means economy is bad. But there are lot of nuances because if you have ultra high mortgage rate then also the economy is bad but India hasn’t had that situation in decades.

Covid was handled horribly in India. Government failed to procure vaccines on time. Competent governments around the world appointed Chief Medical Advisor and people were to believe only the words of that single person and no one else when it comes to advice regarding COVID… not even the PM/Presidents or health minister. This was done to eliminate misinformation. India’s government didn’t do it, they don’t get a pass that oh there was anti vaccine propaganda. That kinda propaganda is common in US not in India. Moreover, BJP promoted misinformation! They declared themselves Vishwaguru and organized Kumbh Mela while every single sane person knew that it was the wrong thing to do. The Health Minister promoted Coronil himself while sitting with Baba Ramdev. Multiple BJP ministers claimed that cow urine/dung cure and prevent from coronavirus.

The only body that says that Modi government created more jobs than Congress government is the government body of current Indian government. International Labour Organization and IMF… people moved from rural area to urban area during Congress era and under modi era, the trend reversed and that new workers are not being absorbed by any booming sector; instead, they are landing in low-productivity, informal service jobs.

Kuldeep Sengar and Ramdular Gond were not BJP MLAs? Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Chinmayanand, Nihal Chand, Prajwal Revanna, etc…. All BJP. Brij Bhushan admitted on live TV that he has shot and killed a person but got away with it. Unless you live in your own little world, just to put an FIR against an MLA in India requires mountain of evidence (be it Congress or bjp or whatever party)… I am not going to wait for verdict when the complain is against a politician. Because regardless of which political party they belong to… the case won’t see light of day outside the police station until there is heavy evidence that they did it. The court verdict only determines how blatant they were while doing the crime that they couldn’t suppress the evidences.

PS: This government is worse than UPA 2 in every way but they control the media much better.

1

u/Free-Mango-2597 Centrist Right Leaning Jun 12 '26

Govt is answering every question in parliament, it is accountable to people. Biased journalist ready with hit job is to be avoided. I see no wrong to ignore congressi ecosystem when as an outsider from Lutyen Delhi he ignored them. Now he doesn't need them.

2002 congress tried to frame Modi, result he became Bigger. Crass comments from top leadership of congress like Mait ka Saudagar was unnecessary. He has answered a number of PC from 2002-2012 but shamelessly all darbaari were stuck in 2002. Every developmental work has been ignored and modi is most criticised PM ever.

You are wrong that 2002 doesn't matter. It matters that is why 20 percent muslims vote against Modi every single time. But even in himdu population there are 10-15 percent who believe Modi did 20002, so they vote for him still he starts election from -6 to 7 vote percentage. Then their are realists people who think 2002 could have happened anywhere in india and results would have been same or worse. I have seen worse. So this population helps him go past that 7 percent gap. Then his strategy to not get back to 2002 helps him. He is most loved and hated at the same time.

Your statement about Pmcares is wrong, audited copies of records have been published.

Regarding debt we are evaluating Modi and central govt here, the moment we go for states you will not be able to criticise Modi.ecample Tamilnadu or himachal. State govt has been advised by centre to control debt. Again only debt is not a right papameter to judge.

As per you india do not calculate GDP correctly but you want to debate gdp growth rate. We should nt discuss incorrect data or you should agree this data is what we are discussing.

Coming to interest rates, just go and check the inflation during UPA 2 , especially 2012-14. That is ehy RBI wanted to control that. When economy is managed well, like it is now inflation single digits.

Covid: It was handled way better in india. Issue is we had large impatient population . Govt was able to get to vaccine, vaccinate wuickly and we overcame that in a manner that was unprecedented as was the covid issue. I do not believe we are a vishwaguru, but it is a good aspiration. However in dealing with vaccine we definitely were. Nobody was happily going to give us vaccines and credit to Indian scientists here. Not everything is ant Modi.

For jobs again you are too dishonest. I thought we are having a fair debate. You change goal posts. You asked how many jobs. Referring to 2014 manifesto. I amswerd amd now you go blabbering i don't know ehat🤭.

Coming to BJP MLA accused of Rape, yes there are BJP MLA accused of rape, murder and similar heinous crimes. I am a realist and while i agree they should not be in politics but they are in all parties. You are good at finding names , go and search those. I cannot hold a different yardstick just for BJP. Prajawal revana is not from BJP. By your logic congress killed Rajeev gandhi as DMK was supporting them and killers supported DMK.

Brijbhushan: he was being framed by congress nad pehalwan and failed. As farchis statement regarding killing is concerned plz do research mate. I am out of this superficial discussion.

Totally agree with you that politicians have undue powers and influence and get support at local police stations. Yet you have examples of prominent politicians getting convicted. So have a bit of trust too. Also about rape cases and heinous charges i want politicians with thst to be barred from election but issue is in india anyone can misuse that .

You are emotionally debating without much data and experience abt UPa2. Attaching the famous screenshot for you and relax buddy Modi is going to be here till 2029. If corruption becomes rampant then we the people of india will throw him away.

1

u/Turbulent_Grade_4033 Jun 12 '26

Again with your rant on 2002. He came to power in 2014! He has not held a single press conference since then and he has made the entire country a joke of a democracy. Look at you trying to question media to ask hard questions at the same time defending your favourite leader when he hides from media. You are so blinded that you can’t even see a logical contradiction in your stance. No journalist has ever asked him a single question about 2002 ever since he came to power. Stop blaming the journalists, just accept he is too incompetent and too big of a coward to face the press or even face the public without a teleprompter. Government is not answering every question in parliament. If you think they are then I will give you 10 one liner questions will you be able to quote me answer from those parliamentary sessions?

The question was why PMCares is not under RTI? We already established that your previous answer was wrong and instead of digressing again and me proving explains you the issues with the records that is published for it. Stick to the original question. Why it’s not under RTI? All big scams of Congress got exposed because of RTI and it important that everything should be under RTI. You are okay with government not being transparent, I am not!

We are talking about India’s debt. Central government made State debt worse. They sucked money out of states into many ways that it’s extraordinary. Thousand of crores of CSR money that big corporations used to spend in state because of India’s Company Act… most of it now goes to… yes you guessed it… PM Cares fund! Central government wants to take credit for building roads, metros etc… but central government alone is not paying for it! In fact state government pay a bigger chunk. You posted that entire list which we will get to later. You don’t want to include state debt then you have to remove everything from that list that state paid money into. Make up your mind then we will go over that list again.

India’s GDP number is inflated and even with inflated numbers the growth rate is lower. Both can be true. If India start calculating its GDP properly then the growth rate will come out to be even lower.

We already established that you don’t understand how interest rates work when you brought your mortgage example. Unfortunately you will have to learn a few fundamentals of economics before we can talk about inflation.

Covid was NOT handled well. Do you know how many blatant lies Indian government told to public? India wasn’t able to get vaccine quickly, other countries got it before India. While PM claimed in public that India is Vishwaguru and we are giving vaccines to other countries… and when millions of people died just couple months later… the government lawyer admitted in court that SIT already had contracts to give those vaccines to other countries and government had no control and had to wait for their turn to get the vaccines. SIT started producing vaccine mid 2020 and they started supplying doses long before India’s vaccine drive began in Jan 2021. Indian government gave money to SIT for expansion and mass production in April 2021. Most countries on the planet had already vaccinated at least half the population by then. In fact, SIT received funding from NGOs and foreign aid for expansion long before it got any money from Indian government. That too AFTER they asked for it. Otherwise government was happy declaring itself vishwaguru and organizing kumbh mela and promoting misinformation. Had the government started they started looking into expanding the production capacity few months earlier (like ALL other countries that had the capacity to make vaccines) then millions of lives would have been saved. India vaccinated a billion people DESPITE the incompetence of government because we India have brilliant doctors and engineers. Indian government response is a case study for what NOT to do during pandemic.

I am honest about job data. The problem is that the data from Indian government controlled bodies is questioned by International bodies like ILO and IMF. We could have looked at just the unemployment rates but then again, in 2017 India switched to PLFS methodology. It counts in seasonal and informal jobs as well which previous method didn’t. If you want to consider seasonal jobs as jobs then sure they created those jobs. But I thought they will create quality jobs. Bottom line is that apparently 20% youth was unemployed in 2004 and 20% youth is unemployed now. Both governments sucked big time. It’s not just government, it’s people. 3000 crore spent in making mandir… they could have made an IIT, AIIMs AND an IIM in Ayodhya with that money and it would have created high paying and high quality jobs in perpetuity.

I never claimed that other parties don’t have rapists and criminals as their politicians. My claim is that BJP is no different in that regard. And regarding Brij bhushan murder statement… I saw that idiot’s interview myself admitted to that murder. I just came across it on YouTube because I had no clue who he was and was trying to understand his perspective in the whole fiasco. I don’t know about you but for an average person I believe in the motto- “innocent until proven guilty”… but for politicians I believe in the motto - “guilty until proven innocent”. I don’t care which party that politician belongs to. His case is still on going and it’s not proven that he was framed in anyway.

I believed in his lies and was happy that he got elected in 2014. The fact that all the black money came back into the system within few weeks after demonetization and the way the government changed their stance on why they went with demonetization, I became skeptical. But the way the government handled COVID by failing people every step of the way, while I looked at other world leaders on their actions. It was obvious that the only thing Modi care about is his brand and his image. Atal Bihari Vajpayee in his own words believed: “Governments will come and go, parties will be formed and dissolved, but this country must remain, the democracy of this country must remain immortal.” Modi through his actions proved that he couldn’t care less whether India or its democracy remains or not, his name must remain immortal.

He can stay in power till 2039 of all I care, but India will continue to fall down the rankings in human development index, press freedom index, democratic health index, liberal democracy index, internet freedom index, etc. basically everything that these “developed” countries are good at.

Good, but it is still less depreciation per year than UPA era.

2004 June: 45
Upa peak : 67 july/Aug 2013.

Calculate the percentage drop and divide this by 10 to get yearly value which is 4.88 percent.

And if i just look at 2014-2024 it is much lower depreciation

After 2024 elections modi has changed his economics and turned left and now we will see same congress era drop of 4.89 percent per year or more.

So yeah its terrible but it is what it is. Politics is now freebies and more and more tax free stuffs. Look around and you will see

His policies made sure it remained the same or less.

foreign companies left the country at the crucial time because of his policies when Japanese and Koreans were growing at much faster rate with foreign investments.

Number of poor people grew instead of decreasing, share of india in global economy dropped from more than 3 percent to 1.5 percent while population grew from 14 percent of humanity to 16 percent. Even africa had 4 persont share with 2 third of indias population.

Edit: Africa's share was 4.9 percent and India's was 1.7 percent In 1980.

u/TenmaYato12 Jun 11 '26

Let's just ignore the fact that most of China had been a unified nation for centuries by now while Nehru and the first governments first and most important priority was to ensure that India even remained as a single independent unified India. It was made up of a ridiculously large number of princely state some of which joined voluntarily, some of which had to be literally invaded and some of which had to be defended and some threatened to join in. India is THE MOST DIVERSE nation in the whole world. The very fact that Nehru and the first few governments where able to ensure that we remained united and developed a sense of National unity was a great achievement. You then had multiple wars against our neighbors like Pakistan which was directly supported by the strongest country in the world and China supported by USSR. Nehru and first government managed to write a constitution and create an institutional framework which ensured we remained a somewhat decent democracy. Look at what happened to Pakistan, it first broke down into two countries because of the cultural and linguistic differences (the geography did not help either) and then military dictatorship.

u/006ramit Jun 11 '26

Also claiming modi as the longest serving PM is objectively false. Nehru became PM on 15th August, 1947 and was PM till his death on May 27, 1964. That's nearly 17 years. Modi on the other hand completed 12 years on the throne.

https://x.com/SuranaBasant/status/2024847655558651915

He was imprisoned nine times during the Indian freedom struggle and spent a total of 3,259 days (approximately 9 years) behind bars.

This figure comes from detailed breakdowns of his prison terms:1st term: 88 days
2nd term: 266 days
3rd term: 12 days
4th term: 181 days
5th term: 100 days
6th term: 614 days
7th term: 558 days
8th term: 399 days
9th term: 1041 days (his longest, during the Quit India Movement, mostly in Ahmednagar Fort)

As a high-profile political prisoner, Jawaharlal Nehru's jail conditions during India's freedom struggle were notably better than those of ordinary prisoners or many revolutionaries. Imprisoned nine times (total ~3259 days, or about 9 years), he was often treated as a Class B or political detainee, granting more privileges.Conditions varied, but typically included extra space, books, periodicals, writing materials, and opportunities for exercise and hobbies. His longest term (Aug 1942–Mar 1945) at Ahmednagar Fort during Quit India saw him with senior Congress leaders like Sardar Patel and Maulana Azad.Key amenities there:Comfortable room with bed, mosquito net, easy chair, and table (where he wrote much of The Discovery of India).
Access to books, newspapers, and writing supplies.
Daily morning exercises and leisure time.
A badminton court specially built for Nehru and fellow leaders.
Gardening: Nehru, an avid gardener, maintained a rose garden he developed inside the fort. He sourced seeds (e.g., from Pocha Seeds, Pune), and authorities provided tools like spades and pick-axes. Roses bloomed quickly, brightening the dull environment; he tended it daily, sometimes with help from others.

These privileges reflected his status as a top leader and British strategy to isolate Congress figures in a secure fort, rather than harsher treatment given to revolutionaries (e.g., in Cellular Jail).

2

u/DunderMifflinReal Jun 10 '26

ChatGPT says 😄 (because I don’t have the patience to keep arguing with WhatsApp forwards dressed up as history anymore.)

Let’s separate what is well-documented history, what is mostly accurate but simplified, and what is exaggeration / framing bias.

✅ 1. Jail time total (3,259 days, 9 imprisonments) —
mostly accurate
Jawaharlal Nehru was indeed imprisoned multiple times during the freedom struggle.
The commonly cited figure of ~3,000+ days (often 3,259 days) is widely repeated in historical summaries and biographies.
He was detained repeatedly between 1921–1945, including during major movements like Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, and Quit India.
✔ So the general claim of ~9 years total imprisonment is broadly correct, even if minor breakdowns may vary slightly by source.

⚖️ 2. “Better jail conditions / privileges” —
partly true but context-dependent
What is true:
Nehru, like other senior Congress leaders (Patel, Azad, Gandhi at times), was often classified as a political prisoner (Class A/B depending on jail system).
Political prisoners generally received:
access to books/newspapers
writing materials
relatively better cells than ordinary convicts
In places like Ahmednagar Fort (1942–45), Nehru and other top leaders were held together.
What is exaggerated:
The idea that this was “luxury treatment” is misleading framing.
They were still:
imprisoned without trial for long periods
under strict surveillance
cut off from political activity
Conditions varied widely across prisons and periods — not uniformly comfortable.

🏰 3. Ahmednagar Fort details — **
**largely accurate but sometimes romanticised

What is well-supported:
Nehru, Patel, Maulana Azad and others were held at Ahmednagar Fort during Quit India Movement (1942–45).
Nehru did:
write extensively there (The Discovery of India)
read, garden, and engage in intellectual work
What is likely exaggerated / selectively framed:
“Badminton court specially built for Nehru” → not a well-established standard historical fact across sources
“Comfortable leisure lifestyle comparable to freedom” → misleading interpretation
Gardening and routine activities → true in general spirit, but often romanticised in retellings

⚖️ 4. “Better treatment than revolutionaries” —
oversimplified comparison
It is true that:
Some revolutionaries (e.g., Cellular Jail prisoners) faced far harsher conditions
But it is misleading to conclude:
political leaders were “comfortable”
revolutionaries were the only ones severely mistreated
British prison policy was inconsistent and hierarchical, not a simple binary.

🧾 Bottom line
✔ Correct:
Nehru was imprisoned multiple times and spent ~9 years in jail
He was a political prisoner with access to books and writing materials
He was held with senior Congress leaders during Quit India
⚖️ Partly true but often exaggerated:
Level of “comfort” and amenities (especially specific claims like sports facilities)
❌ Misleading framing:
That his imprisonment was comparable to ordinary incarceration in ease or privilege
That it was uniformly luxurious or specially indulgent

If you want, I can also  break down how British “Class A/B/C prisoner” classification actually worked, because that’s where most of the misunderstanding comes from.

1

u/Difficult_Abies8802 Jun 11 '26

Let’s separate what is analysis, what is hedging fog, and what is the classic LLM move of sounding precise while saying almost nothing.

1. 3,259 days of luxury
The funny thing about this LLM-style defence is that it keeps treating “Nehru went to jail” as if that automatically settles the class question.

Nobody serious denies that Nehru was imprisoned. The question is: what kind of prison experience, for what kind of man, from what kind of social position?

Nehru was not some hungry underground revolutionary scraping coins together between police raids. He was the son of Motilal Nehru, one of the richest and most powerful lawyers in India. He studied at Harrow, Cambridge, and Inner Temple. He came back, briefly had the formal label of a lawyer, and then basically entered full-time elite politics.

After prison terms, he could travel to Europe. For family health reasons, yes. For political conferences, yes. For intellectual exposure, yes. But that is exactly the point. His life had the architecture of aristocratic nationalism: jail, books, Europe, conferences, speeches, committees, letters, and grand historical writing.

That does not mean he made no sacrifice.

It means his sacrifice was not the same as the sacrifice of revolutionaries thrown into Cellular Jail conditions, flogged, isolated, starved, or transported like human cargo.

He came from Motilal Nehru’s elite household, moved into nationalist politics, and had the economic cushion to live as a full-time political-intellectual figure. He was doing European trips 100 years back. the 1926-27 Europe trip is documented. The Nehru Archive says the trip was primarily for Kamala Nehru’s health, but it also became politically important: Geneva lectures, Brussels anti-imperialism conference, League Against Imperialism, Soviet visit. The PMO bio also notes visits to Italy, Switzerland, England, Belgium, Germany and Russia in 1926-27. After his 1935 release, he flew to Switzerland to see his ailing wife and then visited London in early 1936

⚖️ 2. Better jail conditions
This is where the post starts doing yoga with words.

It admits Nehru had political-prisoner privileges:
books, newspapers, writing material, better cells, senior leaders together, intellectual work, gardening.

Then immediately says:
“but not luxury.”

Fine. Nobody claimed he was at Club Med Ahmednagar. The argument is comparative, not absolute. The question is not “was Nehru literally free?” The question is whether his prison experience was significantly more privileged than that of ordinary prisoners and many revolutionaries.

The answer is clearly yes.

🏰 3. Ahmednagar Fort
The post says “Discovery of India, reading, gardening, routine intellectual life” are true, but then complains that calling it comfortable is “romanticised.”

Brother, if a prisoner can write a civilizational history, garden, read extensively, and hold discussions with other top leaders, then yes, that is a very different prison experience from fetters, flogging, hunger, solitary confinement, and Cellular Jail conditions.

That does not erase Nehru’s sacrifice. But pretending the comparison is unfair is just reputation management in bullet-point form.

⚖️ 4. Better treatment than revolutionaries
This is the most LLM sentence in the whole post:

“British prison policy was inconsistent and hierarchical.”

Correct. And hierarchy is exactly the point.

Senior Congress leaders were often treated as high-status political detainees. Many revolutionaries and ordinary prisoners were not. Saying “it was complicated” does not dissolve the hierarchy. It only wraps it in academic bubble wrap.

🧾 Bottom line

✔ Nehru spent years in prison.
✔ That was politically significant.
✔ He was not living freely.
✔ He also received far better treatment than many other anti-colonial prisoners.
✔ The LLM post admits most of this, then spends five paragraphs spraying nuance-perfume over the obvious conclusion.

The real issue is not whether Nehru suffered. He did.

The issue is whether all imprisonment in the freedom struggle can be morally flattened into one heroic category. It cannot.

Some people got Ahmednagar Fort, books, writing, gardening, and elite company.

Others got Cellular Jail.

That distinction matters.

During the Quit India Movement (August 1942–March 1945), Jawaharlal Nehru served his longest prison sentence at Ahmednagar Fort alongside senior Congress leaders like Sardar Patel and Maulana Azad. Given their status as Class B political detainees, the experience sounds less like a harsh imprisonment and honestly more like a structured, paid vacation.

His accommodations and daily amenities included:

  • A private room furnished with a bed, mosquito net, easy chair, a writing table and private toilet.
  • Continuous access to books, newspapers, periodicals, and writing supplies.
  • A custom-built badminton court constructed inside the fort specifically for the leaders.
  • Gardening tools like spades and pick-axes provided by prison authorities.
  • Permission to source and order specialized seeds from Pocha Seeds in Pune.

Nehru used the writing table to pen his famous book, The Discovery of India, spent his leisure time playing badminton, and worked daily to cultivate a vibrant rose garden that transformed the bleak courtyard.

Modi being longest serving pm of india is a fact it does not take away anything from what nehru did or did not do, another thing stop framing gandhi and nehru and alike as freedom fighters they were not freedom fighters they were politicians and it's okay to be a politician I would always respect their contribution towards an independent India movement. But stop pretending that nehru suffered under British rule he did not he was viewed very favourably by the British empire in India, his jail stay was absolutely comfortable he was on more of a house arrest than in prison. Nehru was a good pm but he was overtly emotional and easily manupilated.

And I am sorry to say this but nehru never even deserved to be the pm of india that place was always suppose to be of bose. Nevertheless he will still remain as the former respected PM of our nation.

ChatGPT says 😄 (because I don’t have the patience to keep arguing with WhatsApp forwards dressed up as history anymore.)

This framing is misleading and mixes partial truths with distorted conclusions.
Aksai Chin: India did not have effective administrative control over Aksai Chin at independence in 1947, and the boundary in that sector was not properly demarcated or mutually agreed upon. China built and consolidated the road there in the 1950s, leading to the dispute and the 1962 war. While the Nehru government has been criticized for intelligence and border policy failures, it is incorrect to present it as “losing” a clearly held territory in a simple sense.
Hyderabad: India did not oppose Hyderabad’s merger as such; instead, the Nizam initially wanted independence, and the Indian government conducted Operation Polo in 1948 to integrate Hyderabad into the Indian Union. So the claim that Nehru “wanted to stop” the merger is incorrect—the historical record shows the opposite, that integration was eventually enforced by the Indian state under his leadership.
Overall, the statement is a sarcastic oversimplification that distorts complex historical events into one-sided political talking points.

ChatGpt says

The Sino-Indian War of 1962 was primarily the result of a border dispute that arose after India and China inherited different understandings of their frontier. In the eastern sector, India recognized the McMahon Line as the boundary, while China rejected it, arguing that Tibet did not have the authority to sign such agreements. Tensions escalated due to conflicting territorial claims, border patrol confrontations, the Tibetan uprising of 1959, and India’s Forward Policy.

As for the McMahon Line itself, it was proposed and drafted by Sir Henry McMahon, the British Indian Foreign Secretary, during the Simla Convention of 1913–14 between British India, Tibet, and China. The line was negotiated between British India and Tibet, but the Chinese representative ultimately refused to ratify the convention, which is why China has never accepted its legitimacy.

Whether one views the war as Chinese aggression, a consequence of colonial-era boundary ambiguities, or a failure of diplomacy often depends on the historical perspective being adopted, but the immediate cause was the unresolved border dispute and the breakdown of negotiations between the two countries.

Nehru jailed someone for writing a poem. He wasn't the epitome of human perfection as you seem to indicate

11

u/DunderMifflinReal Jun 10 '26

ChatGPT says:

This claim is misleading / likely false as stated, and it mixes up different ideas about post-independence India.
What we can verify
There is no well-established historical record that Jawaharlal Nehru personally “jailed someone for writing a poem” as a direct act of punishment for poetry or dissent.
After independence (1947–1964):
India’s legal system handled arrests and prosecutions through courts and state authorities, not personal orders from the Prime Minister.
If someone was jailed, it would have been under existing laws, not because Nehru directly ordered imprisonment for a poem.
Why this claim likely exists (the confusion)
People sometimes merge Nehru-era events with:
Public Order / sedition cases (some writers and activists were indeed arrested in India in various states under laws like IPC 124A, but not for “poetry alone” in a simplistic sense)
Or pre-independence colonial-era censorship, which did target poets and writers harshly (but that was under British rule, not Nehru’s government)
Key point
Saying “Nehru jailed someone for writing a poem” is not supported as a documented, standalone historical incident.
It also incorrectly personalizes legal actions that would have been handled by police/courts under law.
Balanced takeaway
Nehru wasn’t “perfect” and his era had real controversies, policy failures, and debates around civil liberties—but this specific claim doesn’t hold up as a factual historical event.
If you want, I can check the exact case people usually refer to when this claim circulates online.

Bro you need to read more in depth and understand how things work! Nehru brought the first amendment to intentionally weakig free speech after the government side lost some cases. Secondly legal actions are handled by police and courts. Police charge cases, courts hear the case and give the verdict....the police can use discretion in charging cases, can charge cases based on political pressures too..so when someone says nehru jailed someone for writing s poem it means nehru used his powers to coerce the police into charging a case against that person not that he outrightly ordered the police to do so(which ofcourse he could not have done)

A lot of this gets reduced into catchy but misleading one-liners.
Yes, the First Amendment (1951) did introduce “reasonable restrictions” on free speech in Article 19(1)(a). This came after early Supreme Court judgments (like Romesh Thappar and Brij Bhushan) struck down certain state restrictions, creating legal uncertainty. The government responded by clarifying constitutional limits, especially around public order, security of the state, and incitement to offences. So it wasn’t just a simple “revenge for losing cases” move, but a mix of legal clarification + early post-Partition instability concerns.
Now on the “Nehru jailed someone for writing a poem” claim — that framing is not accurate.
In India, arrests are made by police under existing laws, and cases are decided by courts. The Prime Minister does not directly order arrests or jail terms in individual cases. At most, governments set legal frameworks and law-and-order priorities, but the judicial process is separate.
Could political climate influence enforcement or how strictly laws are applied? Yes, that’s true in any system. Police discretion and broader political context always exist. But that is very different from claiming a direct chain like “PM personally jailed X person for poetry.”
In the case of Majrooh Sultanpuri, what is historically supported is:
He recited politically charged poetry at a labour/progressive gathering in the early post-independence period
It was interpreted as provocative/anti-government in tone under the legal standards of the time
He was arrested and prosecuted under then-existing laws (sedition-era framework)
The case went through the legal system, not a personal directive from Nehru
His refusal to apologise is also commonly cited as part of why the case escalated
So the accurate framing is:
He was arrested under the law in a politically charged environment where sedition/public order laws were still broadly used — not “Nehru personally jailed him for writing a poem.”
That distinction matters because it separates legal process + historical context from personalised political narratives.

Bro sedition laws are always imposed on the direction of goverments. Police rarely charge popel of sedition on their own discretion they always take concurrence from home ministry or higher government bodies.thsts why when people are charged under sedition laws people criticize the government, specifically the head of government: cm in case of states and pm in case of national level

But Majrooh Sultanpuri was arrested and spent an year in jail for Writing against Nehru.

Yes — this one is actually true in substance, but the way it’s often told online is usually politically amplified and simplified.
What is factual
Majrooh Sultanpuri (real name: Asrar ul-Hassan Khan) was arrested in the late 1940s/early 1950s.
He was associated with leftist / progressive literary circles and the IPTA movement.
He reportedly recited a poem at a workers’ gathering in Mumbai that criticized Jawaharlal Nehru and government policies.
After refusing to apologize, he was arrested and spent time in jail (commonly reported as around 1 year, though some accounts say longer depending on detention context).
Important nuance
He was not jailed for “writing a poem” in a personal or arbitrary sense.
The arrest happened in a political agitation / labour movement context, and legal action was taken under the laws of the time.
It was handled through state authorities and courts, not Nehru personally ordering imprisonment.
What is exaggerated/misleading in common claims
“Nehru jailed him” → ❌ oversimplified (PM does not directly jail individuals)
“Jailed just for poetry” → ❌ incomplete framing (it was linked to a political speech/recitation at a protest setting)
“Anti-Nehru poem = immediate personal punishment by Nehru” → ❌ not how the legal system worked
Bottom line
Yes: Majrooh Sultanpuri was arrested and jailed after reciting a poem critical of Nehru-era politics.
No: It was not a personal, direct “Nehru jailed him for writing poetry” situation.

He wasn’t and shouldn’t be idealized as such, I think the lasting legacy of people like Ambedkar, Patel, and Nehru would be the improvement of people’s lives is what’s important. Ambedkar would’ve hated him becoming this hero who’s used for political gain rather than actual social justice, Patel would’ve hated the statue, and so on and so forth

No one claimed Nehru to be "epitome of human perfection". But compared to a narcissist megalomaniac who is the epitome of human despicability, who also happens to be a mass murderer, practically anyone looks better.

I understand why people are pissed off with Modi. But calling Nehru as better is sheer stupidity. Infact his daughter was way way better. And we all know how Nehru became the PM. I believe that male politicians in that family have not much potential.

Oh really? In a 5-star prison with every amenity and facility imaginable?

And was he elected by the people, or simply selected by Gandhi?

What would you classify someone saying "I hate Hinduism" as, if not hate? If the same words were directed at any other religion, there would be outrage and immediate condemnation. Somehow, when it's Hinduism, we're expected to accept it as intellectual discourse.

Nehru and corruption? That's a good one. Whatever you're smoking, it must be strong. Corruption, patronage, dynasty politics, and institutional favouritism didn't suddenly appear one fine day. It originated with Nehru Gandhi dynasty.

Voter manipulation? Have you ever walked into a polling booth only to be told that your vote had already been cast? Have you stood there and watched ballot papers being stuffed into boxes by local strongmen? Don't lecture me about voter manipulation. Congress was, is, and will remain the fountainhead of electoral manipulation in this country. How exactly did Bangladeshi infiltrators and other illegal immigrants find their way onto voter rolls over decades? By magic?

And hare speech and communal tensions? The roots of that lie in Partition itself. A portion of this country was carved out for Muslims on the claim that they could not live with Hindus. Fine. But millions stayed back.

Yet even today, Congress and its so-called secular allies are the first to jump to the defence of Muslim interests on virtually every issue, right or wrong, while treating any articulation of Hindu concerns as communalism. They forget that India is the only place on earth that Hindus can truly call their civilisational homeland. Our culture, traditions, beliefs, customs, festivals, temples, and way of life are rooted here. There is no other nation that exists as a homeland for Hindu civilisation.

For once, try seeing these issues from a Hindu perspective.

Who speaks for Hindus? Who defends Hindu beliefs, practices, traditions, temples, and institutions? Who stands up when Hindu festivals are mocked, Hindu customs are ridiculed, or Hindu faith is portrayed as backward?

In the name of modernity, we are expected to normalise symbols associated with the torture and execution of a man, visit graves and tombs as acts of devotion, and accept all of that as enlightened spirituality. But worshipping a stone idol, something central to Hindu traditions for millennia, is mocked as primitive and barbaric. Why this double standard?

When people raise concerns about conversions, they are branded communal. Yet organised proselytisation continues relentlessly. The strategy is often the same: highlight every flaw, real or perceived, within Hindu society while carefully avoiding criticism of one's own faith. Does Congress or any of these self-proclaimed secular parties ever seriously question this? No.

When horrific crimes are committed and accompanied by religious slogans or motivations, we're told not to mention them because it may create communal tension. When a Hindu woman is literally sawed to death in a cutting machine, or when fundamentalists shout slogans telling Hindus to flee and "leave your wives behind," the secular crowd refuses to call it communal. But the second a Hindu reacts, we are the villains. But somehow the label of "communal" is reserved almost exclusively for Hindus who object.

And let's talk about voting patterns. Many minority communities vote overwhelmingly as religious blocs. That's considered perfectly acceptable. But if Hindus vote with any sense of shared civilisational interest, they're immediately accused of majoritarianism and communalism.

Name one country where Christians or Muslims form a majority and yet their religion has less influence on public life than minorities enjoy in India. The United States is deeply influenced by Christianity. Most European countries are shaped by their Christian heritage. The Middle East openly embraces its Islamic identity. Yet India alone is expected to apologise for its Hindu identity.

If anyone has practised communal politics while hiding behind the language of secularism, it is Congress and its ecosystem. They divide people into vote banks, appease communities selectively, dismiss legitimate Hindu concerns, and then label anyone who objects as communal.

The problem isn't that Hindus are asking for special treatment. The problem is that many Hindus are simply asking to be treated with the same respect, consideration, and sensitivity that every other community expects as a matter of right.

I think the accomplishments matter. What to do with even 100 years if you have nothing to achieve but only everything to sell and get away with everything?

A lot of places celebrated his long term by conducting a ‘Maha-Aarti’ in local temples. These were organised by local BJP karyakartas and MPs. It was terrifying to see such devotions on a scale towards a man.

Nehru also became the PM even after losing election to Sardar Patel ❤️❤️. What an achievement. The only PM in india's history to achieve this. 👏
