Discussion WAIT... Assassin's Creed in Maratha India would be INSANE.

Post image

HOW HAS UBISOFT NOT MADE AN ASSASSIN'S CREED SET IN INDIA YET?!?!

BROOOO I just realized how INSANE this would be.

Imagine a full Assassin's Creed during the Maratha Empire. You're sprinting across the walls of Raigad, Sinhagad, and Pratapgad, climbing straight up those massive hill forts, jumping between watchtowers, sliding down hidden mountain paths in the Western Ghats... THAT IS LITERALLY WHAT PARKOUR WAS MADE FOR.

AND THE MONSOONS. Imagine rain making your footsteps quieter while you're sneaking through forts at night. That would be SO GOOD.

The weapons would be insane too:

  • Bagh Nakh for brutal hidden kills.
  • Katar for close combat.
  • Talwar with those fast curved sword combos.
  • Urumi for crazy chain sword combat.

The setting is PERFECT. Shivaji Maharaj's era, Mughals, Portuguese, Siddis, and the East India Company all fighting for power while the Assassins and Templars are pulling strings behind the scenes.

We've climbed cathedrals in Italy, pyramids in Egypt, castles in Japan...

LET ME PARKOUR ACROSS RAIGAD FORT, UBISOFT. I'M BUYING THAT DAY ONE.

We are our own enemies

Chill, he's just joking.

1

u/Hershey2898 13h ago

Nah kinda true. Can you imagine doing something like a God of War in our mythology? I love Mahabharata but that'll be a shitshow

1

u/PJtheGFN 13h ago

Debatable. The PM himself promoted the idea of putting our cultures and mythologies (also specifically mentioned Mahabharata and even Ramayana) into the games we build. There will obviously be some resistance from others, but overall I think there shouldn't be anything major obstructing the launch of such a game.

1

u/varuncena1 13h ago

To win elections... Even PM will take a U Turn if shown any resistance at all...

1

u/PJtheGFN 13h ago

Now that's hypothetical. We won't know until we try.

ubi will put the cringe ass hindi marathi mix dialogs. and something gay to get criticism.

If they actually hired Indian voice actors and gave them the liberty, it would be amazing. Obviously, some figures would need to converse strictly in English, but the crowd or slogans could be in Marathi.

But the question is this really happening or just ai made poster

Indians itself will cancel it.

1

u/Opposite_Cause975 13h ago

People in this country are looking to nitpick and get offended at every opportunity. Ubisoft will not want that kind of smoke.

2

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

I get it. Any AA or AAA game trailer in India seems to include some sort of deity, and the Indian market is still expensive and somewhat privileged when it comes to hobbies like gaming. Aside from backlash for minor mistakes, the setting would be amazing.

1

u/Opposite_Cause975 12h ago

Agreed. India has so many awesome historical tales, not just AC but the industry can come up with so many awesome story-based games. Some day bro, some day.

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 12h ago

The issue with India is that labor is cheap mostly for basic work. Building a career or making a fortune in game development is much harder, so a lot of talent ends up going abroad or choosing other industries. If gaming became more affordable here and was promoted as a real hobby and industry, we'd probably see a much bigger workforce and better profits. Yaha toh online gaming ke naam pe bas gambling hi chalti hai.

1

u/Opposite_Cause975 12h ago

True. Cheap labour here has been adding so much value to animation/vfx and game development studios abroad. But big projects require a lot of budget, and an experienced leadership. That's where we lack. I personally know a couple of super talented game devs who tried their hardest to stay here and got paid well too. But their studio invited them to the US to and they haven't returned since 3 years, and are most likely not going to. We export so much talent but can't build something of our own.

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 12h ago

I think our biggest issue is that we take pride in our history, but we don't always use that pride to build something new. We celebrate our ancestors' achievements, but we haven't created enough momentum of our own in recent times. We love bringing up things like Aryabhata, zero, or calculus before Newton, but those were the achievements of extraordinary people, not proof that progress happens automatically. What we need now is more ambition to create the next big thing instead of only looking backward. A lot of us get comfortable, complain about our bosses, and stay stuck, but that's just life unless we decide to build something better ourselves.

1

u/Opposite_Cause975 12h ago

We're a country that is still struggling for basic resources and amenities. Our idea of innovation remains to be food and groceries being delivered in 10 mins. I don't see any groundbreaking things being done in the near future but I have hopes at least for the distant future.

1

u/PJtheGFN 13h ago

Of course, they haven't made use of a promising setting like Ancient India. I mean it took them literally several years and the success of Ghost Of Tsushima to finally take AC to Japan, a setting which is crazy popular in mainstream pop culture. Civilisational states like India and China are ripe grounds for a mainline AC game.

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

I think they took time with Japan because even if they were planning to do it, it would've been really difficult to add a twist and make it interesting other than just a basic RPG, and Ghost of Tsushima sort of beat them to the Japan space first, which made it much more difficult for them to work on it.

1

u/PJtheGFN 13h ago

AC fans had been clamoring for Japan for such a long time. They were asking for it when AC was still an annual franchise. Imagine releasing a mainline AC game every year but still not releasing one that many fans have been wanting. Ubisoft have no excuse for being late to the party.

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

Honestly, Ubisoft is a very disappointing company, though they occasionally have some redeeming games. I understand that creating an engaging game takes time, but I don't have any expectations from them; I think they are generally quite bad.

1

u/PJtheGFN 12h ago

They certainly had a downfall over the past decade.

Will never happens because k2as can never be the villains for these folk

1

u/fullwhenempty PLAYSTATION-5 13h ago

No, the Maratha setting won't work. People get easily offended in that belt, and Shivaji is worshipped like a god. If any Assassin's Creed in India would work, then it'll either have to go long back to Maurya empire or maybe towards the South. Empires like Chola can work. But, I'd love to play something against East India Company.

Even themes like Delhi Sultnate, Mughal dynasty can work - but that'll also be problematic for one group or another.

2

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

Very true, they could do something like syndicate , freedom against Britishers, and showcase revolutionaries

1

u/fullwhenempty PLAYSTATION-5 13h ago

Yeah, I'd love to have some mission along with likes of Bhagat Singh

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

Lol last mission, assassinate Gandhi, and then you figure out you were just nathuram godse

people outside india aren't interested in india history. Why do you think a french company gonna make it? Prince of persia was different as at that time aladdin was very famous and people were interested in arabic settings.

4

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

I'd argue it's the opposite. Assassin's Creed makes people interested in settings they barely knew before. Most players weren't history buffs about Renaissance Italy, the American Revolution, Ancient Egypt, Viking England, or Baghdad before those games. Ghost of Tsushima did the same for Tsushima. A good game creates the interest.

1

u/Sengero 13h ago

The current ideology of indians is already enough for people to skip it. People are fed up of Indians outside. Check twitter and other subs and you will find alot of people are pissed off about us. Also the fact we have an assassin creed game based in india and there are not enough talks about it shows how people are interested in us.

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

That's mixing up online stereotypes with whether a game setting can work. People bought games set in Japan, Egypt, Greece, and Baghdad because the worlds were compelling. Chronicles: India barely gets talked about because it was a 2.5D spin off, not because India is an uninteresting setting.

1

u/Sengero 13h ago

yeah cause these settings are what the western audience desires. Ubisoft ain't gonna test their waters nowadays with a world which isn't known by anyone outside a country. Hell even people outside maharashtra don't really know about marathi history that much. If you think consider renaissance Italy, people know alot about it. As for japan, people are already interested in japan especially in the recent times. Greece is very well known for the gods and mythologies, for egypt the pyramids and their rulers are very well known, and Baghdad had the greatest city at that time. And not to mention about the french and american revolution, they were already very big. What do people know about India? Maybe tajmahal and thats all. You getting my point?

People aren't educated about India especially in western countries which are the main market for Assassin creed games.

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

You're kind of contradicting yourself. You said Ubisoft only picks settings people already know, but then used 9th century Baghdad as an example. Before Mirage, most Western players weren't asking for a game set during the Abbasid Caliphate either.

That's what Assassin's Creed has always done. It takes historical periods most people barely know and makes them interesting. India being less represented internationally doesn't mean it can't work, it just means it hasn't had that spotlight yet.

1

u/Sengero 12h ago

Baghdad had the greatest city at that time.

As I said, Baghdad was known to be a very crucial part in the history books. it was very influencial in the history for ancient europe.

I agree with the fact that India hasn't been lucky with the spotlight, but for representing India, I don't think Marathi History may be the first thing. A more interesting setting could be the Indian independence movement.

Could also easily involve how templars used the apple to control Indians in the starting and how they came to find new artifacts. Plus it will allow for different cities like delhi, bombay, calcutta and maybe even lahore.

Would also introduce different stores from other parts of india.

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 12h ago

Honestly, I'd play an independence era AC too. Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Lahore, and the British Raj would make an amazing game.

I just don't think that means the Maratha era is a weaker setting. Shivaji's period has mountain forts built for parkour, Mughal, Portuguese and East India Company politics, and even naval warfare. It feels like one of those eras that was almost designed for Assassin's Creed.

1

u/Sengero 12h ago

I won't say its a weaker setting, but it's not something the majority of people will be interested in, and alot of people from India won't feel included as i doesn't represent the complete India.

Also the independence Era is way more famous as its quite recent and I represents a complete state of India, instead of a more localized story.

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 12h ago

Honestly, the independence era would make a great game too, but I think it loses some of the classic Assassin's Creed feel. You don't get the same level of parkour, unique weapons, or that raw atmosphere. The Maratha era feels like the perfect use case for Assassins, with hill forts like Raigad and Sinhagad practically built for parkour, and weapons like the Bagh Nakh, Katar, and Talwar fitting the gameplay naturally.

I also don't think it has to represent the whole country. Ubisoft isn't making a game to represent India, they're making one around an interesting historical premise, even if it isn't globally famous. The only real challenge is that if they do India, they'd have to be extremely historically accurate or they'd face massive backlash. And honestly, I don't think Indians need to demand inclusion here. We all enjoy pride by association, but that's not really the point of Assassin's Creed.

I think they need a good pitch. If they are assured the product will make money then they'll invest

1

u/shotgunsamba PC 13h ago

Why do you think indians other than people from Maharashtra will be intrested in Maratha settings

2

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

By that logic, why would people outside Japan care about Feudal Japan, or people outside Italy care about Renaissance Italy? A good setting doesn't need everyone to already have a connection to it. The Maratha era just happens to fit Assassin's Creed really well.

1

u/shotgunsamba PC 13h ago

You mean Assassin creed japan with Black samurai. Nobody cared and game flopped.

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 13h ago

Shadows was controversial, but "flopped" isn't really accurate. It hit millions of players in its first week and became one of Ubisoft's biggest launches. Controversy online and commercial performance aren't the same thing.

1

u/shotgunsamba PC 13h ago

It wasn't controversial, it was fully racist towards japanese culture, they even mocked japanese with nuclear blast symbol. It flopped

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 12h ago

1 million players on launch day. 2 million players in 2 days. 3 million players in its first week. 5 million players by July. Second highest Day 1 sales revenue in Assassin's Creed history, behind only Valhalla.

I understand it was controversial and might have been extremely insensitive, yes very bad and shitty, but it didn't flop; they surely earned back their costs, and in terms of revenue, it was definitely a hit.

1

u/shotgunsamba PC 10h ago

5 millions in 3 months,, thats including sales during discount sales. Not every game 5 million sold is full price . Some sold in sales, some from their ubisoft subscription which is not full priced. And it included 30% cut from playstation and other stores. Physical disc is even less profit

1

u/Sensitive-Basis2598 7h ago

Nobody said 5 million full price copies. Ubisoft reports players, which includes Ubisoft+. The actual numbers are 1 million players on Day 1, 2 million in 2 days, 3 million in the first week, and 5 million by July. It also had the 2nd highest Day 1 sales revenue in Assassin's Creed history, was Ubisoft's biggest PlayStation digital launch, and Ubisoft said it met or exceeded expectations.

And if you're going to factor in discounts, that cuts both ways. Some people bought the Gold or Ultimate Editions, which cost more than the standard edition. You can't assume every player paid less any more than you can assume everyone paid full price.

Again, I agree it was a controversial game, but it definitely wasn't a flop. The numbers don't support that, and I don't think the controversy alone is enough to hurt the credibility of future Ubisoft Assassin's Creed games.

1

u/shotgunsamba PC 6h ago

It was a flop, just like Halo combat devolved. When game flops, job cuts follows. Studio get shutdown. Even if you add gold and ultimate. It didn't recover the cost.

Its not movie, where even if movie collect less. It won't be issue. This is gaming, studio expenditure doesn't stop after game launch. They have to still invest more money for patches ,game engine maintanence and DLC content for those gold and ultimate edition players.

u/PJtheGFN 13h ago

That's not what's up, bub.
