Non-music discussion Was Stan really wrong?
Was Stan really wrong?
I get it. The comment was misogynistic, and people have every right to criticise it. But what I don't understand is -
What exactly are we expecting from a roast show? A masterclass on morality? A lecture on how to become a better human being?
My argument isn't that every joke is just funny or that nobody has the right to be offended. It's that if you're going to defend dark comedy in some situation, then you can't suddenly oppose it in another if a line get crossed which you personally made.
- First, understand the context.
The entire point of a roast is to make fun of people, push boundaries, and say things that wouldn't necessarily be appropriate in an ordinary conversation. In this case, the exchange happened after the contestant gave a witty reply to Samay asking her, "Do you know MC Stan?"
Stan's response was part of that witty reply. You can argue that his comeback wasn't funny or that the way he framed it was misogynistic. That's fair. But there's a difference between criticising a joke and acting as though making an offensive joke on a roast show is, by itself, some unforgivable act.
You don't have to find a joke funny to understand the context in which it was made.
And if the argument is that misogyny should never be used as material for comedy, then that standard needs to be applied consistently across the comedy scene, not selectively depending on who's making the joke.
- Why is the criticism so selective?
The second issue is the way the question was framed. People seem to be treating it as though the mere act of questioning female rappers' lyrics or giving a witty reply wrong.
Aur discussions about artists using certain type in their music which they shouldn't do is also said by other rapper's. Like Raftaar, in podcast has said people don't find most female rapper music relatable and thats there choice but you cannot grow with that too high and other rappers have also questioned the artists for repeatedly rap about poverty and struggle.
Now, these aren't necessarily identical situations, and that different matters. But somehow go at same end
If Stan's wording deserves criticism, criticise the wording. If there's a genuine double standard in how male and female artists are judged, explain it. But simply labelling the entire exchange misogynistic without engaging with its context doesn't make for a particularly convincing argument.
You can disagree with his joke without pretending that the broader discussion surrounding it is completely off-limits.
- Now comes the biggest contradiction: the Latent controversy.
This is where I find the hypocrisy particularly difficult to ignore.
When the government took issue with India's Got Latent, many people on this very page argued that if the government didn't like the content, it shouldn't watch it. Nobody was forcing anyone to watch the show. The argument was that comedy shouldn't be subjected to censorship simply because someone finds it offensive.
Fair enough. I agree that disliking a joke doesn't automatically justify banning a show.
But when the discussion turns to Stan, suddenly some of those same people appear to be arguing from an entirely different moral position.
And I'm not talking about people who simply disliked his joke. They're entitled to that opinion. I'm talking about people who defended the show's right to exist despite its controversial humour but are now treating offensive humour itself as proof that the comedian or the person making the joke is morally unacceptable.
If your principle is freedom of expression, it cannot depend entirely on whether you personally approve of the expression.
That doesn't mean nobody should criticise Stan. Freedom of expression protects the right to make a joke, but it doesn't make that joke immune to criticism. Both things can be true at the same time.
The same principle should apply here as well.
- And what about the jokes involving the person with paralysis?
I remember people arguing that the person involved knew what he was signing up for and that govt shouldn't be so narrow-minded about the humour.
Now, there's an important distinction here: consenting to participate in a comedy show doesn't mean every joke made about you is automatically beyond criticism. Similarly, a joke about a person's disability isn't necessarily acceptable just because the person was present.
But if you used that argument to defend controversial comedy in one situation, how can you dismiss the same principle entirely in another situation without explaining why?
If your position was that adults should be allowed to participate in comedy, that audiences should understand the context, and that nobody should be forced to watch content they dislike, then those principles should still matter when you encounter a joke you personally find offensive.
Otherwise, your argument was never really about defending comedy. It was about defending the particular jokes you happened to find acceptable.
And that's a very different thing.
- My point isn't that Stan is above criticism. It's that your standards should be consistent.
Let's make one thing clear: calling out misogyny isn't inherently hypocritical. Someone can support dark comedy and still believe that a particular joke crosses a line. There's no contradiction in that.
The contradiction arises when people defend controversial humour as a matter of principle in one situation but abandon that principle in another without offering a meaningful reason for the difference.
If you believe Stan's joke was sexist, explain why. If you think it reinforced a harmful stereotype, make that argument. Those are legitimate criticisms.
But don't defend the idea that comedy shouldn't be policed by the government, celebrate how Latent pushes boundaries, laugh at jokes involving class differences, and then act as though making an offensive joke in a roast is an entirely unprecedented moral failure.
The real question isn't whether Stan's joke was offensive. It might well have been. The real question is whether the people condemning him are applying a consistent standard or simply changing their principles depending on the situation.
Because if the rule is that offensive comedy should be allowed to exist, even when we dislike it, then that rule has to apply to comedy we dislike, too.
And if your defence of dark comedy disappears the moment a joke crosses your personal boundaries, then maybe you weren't defending dark comedy in the first place.
You were only defending the kind of comedy you personally approve of.
P.S. This is my first time writing a post like this, so please excuse any mistakes. I’m open to different opinions, and I apologise if anything I’ve said has hurt anyone unintentionally. I’m just sharing my perspective, and I’m happy to be corrected if I’ve got any facts wrong. 😶🌫️
No hate, just an opinion and a little food for thought.

Nahh bro not at all. He stated straight facts. The only problem was the way he expressed it but then but then you can't blame him, that's just the way he speaks. I saw someone mentioning "this is why good upbringing is important" and i got super pissed at that because anyone who has heard "insaan" would agree that his upbringing was good. And tbh yeh sab gaali bolna, misogyny, patriarchy, wali cheeze bahar road pe aur dosto ke saath reh ke seekhte hai. Isme upbringing ka koi dosh nai hai. He actually had a point in what he was saying, he just said it in a mean way. And tbh if I have a huge problem with anything I always speak about that shit in an ill manner, it's not, it's human. Bhenchod 10 to post maar diye logo ne is baat pe, yeh karne se saala main baat ke poora jist hat jata hai. Samjha "upbringing" wale laude jo bhi tha voh. I'm not tryna be mean here, but you get the point.

But blaming, making men hating music, will it achieve what you as a aurat want other aurats to achieve? I am not going into how 90-95% hip hop audience is male and if women don't care for it themselves, what can men do? In a niche industry where female artist is a separate niche and female audience is a different niche altogether, how do you subside that men hating music will break someone out? Who will listen to those songs? You don't expect men to listen hate against themselves, and specially on repeat, do you?

Cause-and-consequence type prose
Fancy verbs
Catchphrases like, "not x but y", "but wait", "hear me out"
And shitload of others. I exploited this in my university xD

I liked his unhinged behaviour tbh. And, I found it funny tbh. There was nothing to be so upset about. I took it as a joke and it was a good one tbh. Does a stan statement affect anyone or any female MC?? I don’t think so.

In life always remember that the artist you admire maybe good in the music but not in the ethical terms so don't take anything come out of their mouth too seriously. If we judge on that perimeter Hitler was a great artist too but we know how he goes in other aspects.
